BACKGROUND AND AIM: Houseflies (Musca domestica) are recognized mechanical vectors of foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, particularly in environments with intensive food-handling. Their role in disseminating virulent and multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli at the food-environment-human interface remains underexplored in Northern Thailand. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, phylogenetic distribution, virulence gene carriage, antimicrobial resistance profiles, and resistance determinants of E. coli isolated from houseflies collected at food markets in Pha

Optimal feeding strategies for the red claw crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus, remain to be established. In this study, C. quadricarinatus was fed frozen housefly larva meal (Musca domestica [MD]) at different frequencies to evaluate effects on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, digestive enzyme activity, immune genes, and intestinal microbiota structure. Four feeding protocols were established: control (C) fed basic feed, experimental group 1 (E1) fed basic feed for 2 days and then compound feed (50% MD + 50% basic feed) for 1 day, experimental group 2 (E2) fed basic feed for 1 day and

This study investigated the effects of dietary housefly larvae and frass (HFLF), with or without a multi-component supplement (Rayabold), on the performance, egg quality, and blood biochemical parameters of Lohmann LSL-Lite laying hens. A total of 192 hens, aged 56 weeks, were assigned to a 10-week feeding trial using a 4 × 2 factorial design with four HFLF inclusion levels (0 %, 5 %, 10 %, and 15 %) and two Rayabold levels (0 % and 0.05 %). A significant interaction was observed for feed intake (FI) (P = 0.0001), with hens fed 10 % and 15 % HFLF consuming less feed than those on the control o

The increasing drug resistance of pathogenic bacteria is a crisis that threatens public health. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been suggested to be potentially effective alternatives to solve this problem. Here, we tested housefly Phormicin-derived peptides for effects on Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections in vitro and in vivo. A decreased bacterial load of MRSA was observed in the mouse scald model after treatment with Phormicin and in the positive control group (vancomycin). A mouse scrape model indicated that Phormicin helps the host

We are interested in identifying targets that may be used to develop new control products for the common housefly, Musca domestica, a vector of disease for many vertebrates. One such target, ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), is an embryonic enzyme involved in the regulation of polyamines and is a critical enzyme during M. domestica development. In this study, the cDNA for ODC from M. domestica was cloned, sequenced, and characterized. The full-length cDNA was 1,337-bp, consistent with a single band of approximately 1.35 kb obtained by northern analysis. The open-reading frame contains 1,191 bp, y

Life spans of poikilotherms like the housefly are shortened by elevation of ambient temperature. The objective of this study was to examine the possible involvement of active oxygen species in temperature induced life-shortening of the adult male housefly. Effects of varied ambient temperature, 20 degrees C and 28 degrees C, on life span, cyanide-resistant respiration, H2O2 concentration, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities and glutathione (GSH) concentration were examined. Average life span of flies raised at 28 degrees C was about 52% lower than those raised at 20 degrees C. R

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance in the housefly, Musca domestica, has been investigated for more than 60 years. It will enter a new era after the recent publication of the housefly genome and the development of multiple next generation sequencing technologies. The genetic background of the xenobiotic response can now be investigated in greater detail. Here, we investigate the 454-pyrosequencing transcriptome of the spinosad-resistant 791spin strain in relation to the housefly genome with focus on P450 genes.
RESULTS: The de novo assembly of clean reads gave 35,834 contigs consisting of 21,

Manure from swine treated with antimicrobials as feed additives is a major source for the expansion of the antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) reservoir in the environment. Vermicomposting via housefly larvae (Musca domestica) can be efficiently used to treat manure and regenerate biofertilizer, but few studies have investigated its effect on ARG attenuation. Here, we tracked the abundances of 9 ARGs and the composition and structure of the bacterial communities in manure samples across 6 days of full-scale manure vermicomposting. On day 6, the abundances of genes encoding tetracycline resistance

The housefly, Musca domestica, is an excellent model system to study the diversification of the pathway that specifies the sexual fate. A number of different mechanisms have been described in the housefly, which reflects in part the broad diversity of sex-determining strategies used in insects. In this study we present the molecular identification and characterization of F, which acts as the master switch in the housefly pathway. We provide evidence that F corresponds to the transformer ortholog in Musca (Mdtra), which, as a result of alternative processing, expresses functional products only

In higher Diptera, two nests of diploid cells called the ventral histoblasts, located one on either side of each abdominal segment among the polytene larval epidermal cells, give rise to the sternite and its surrounding pleura. During metamorphosis of the insect, these two groups of cells migrate and meet with each other in the midventral region of the developing adult. The cuticular pattern elements and pigmentation in the fifth sternite of the male housefly, when compared to those of other segments as well as the tergites of both sexes, are quite distinct. The above-mentioned features, coupl

The essential oil (EO) of Thymus serpyllum and thymol were evaluated for their insecticidal activity against the housefly (Musca domestica) larvae and pupae. Contact toxicity and fumigation bioassays were used. Chemical composition analysis of T. serpyllum EO by gas chromatographic mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed that thymol (41.6%), p-cymene (21.9%), and γ-terpinene (19.2%) were the major components. For larval assays, the LC50 value of T. serpyllum EO was 0.4 μl/cm2 for contact toxicity and 20.9 μl/l for fumigation toxicity. For thymol, the contact toxicity LC50 value was 0.035 μl/cm2 and

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors (GABARs) are an important target for existing insecticides such as fiproles. These insecticides act as noncompetitive antagonists (channel blockers) for insect GABARs by binding to a site within the intrinsic channel of the GABAR. Recently, a novel class of insecticides, 3-benzamido-N-phenylbenzamides (BPBs), was shown to inhibit GABARs by binding to a site distinct from the site for fiproles. We examined the binding site of BPBs in the adult housefly by means of radioligand-binding and electrophysiological experiments. 3-Benzamido-N-(2,6-dimethyl-4-perfluo

The duration of discharge of Entomophthora schizophorae (Zygomycetes: Entomophthorales) conidia from house fly (Musca domestica, Diptera) cadavers was measured at 7, 18, and 25 degrees C. The higher the temperature, the shorter the duration of conidia discharge. Significantly more conidia were produced per cadaver at 7 degrees C over a period of 120 h than at 18 and 25 degrees C. At 25 degrees C, the initial discharge over the first 10 h was much larger than at the other temperatures, and at 7 degrees C, no peak in discharge was observed. The persistence of E. schizophorae primary conidia was

The regular use of antimicrobials in livestock production selects for antimicrobial resistance. The potential impact of this practice on human health needs to be studied in more detail, including the role of the environment for the persistence and transmission of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. During an investigation of a pig farm and its surroundings in Brandenburg, Germany, we detected abundant cephalosporin- and fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli in pig faeces, sedimented dust, and house flies (Musca domestica). Genome sequencing of E. coli isolates revealed large phylogenetic di

The emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance have become a major global public health concern. A component of this problem is the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Flies move freely between habitats of food-producing animals and human beings and thus have great potential for dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria from a contaminated environment to milk and meat markets, posing potential hazards for consumers. During the present study, a total of 150 houseflies were captured from milk and meat shops located in Durg and Raipur city of Chhattisgarh, India. The Escherichi

The transmission of antibiotic resistance (AR) from farm animals to healthy human communities, beyond the food chain, is often facilitated by biological vectors, notably houseflies (Musca domestica). This study aimed to evaluate the role of M. domestica collected from commercial broiler chicken farms as a carrier of multidrug-resistant (MDR), extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli. E. coli were isolated separately from the housefly's external surface (ES) and internal homogenate (IH) to determine the primary AR transmission route within houseflies. Remarkably, 68.6% ho

The increasing occurrence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the environment, food and healthcare systems is a global public health concern. MRSA is reported to cause food poisoning, osteomyelitis and pyogenic infections of the skin, and consequently has been categorized as a high-priority pathogen by the World Health Organization. Here, we determined the presence of MRSA in clinical (n=56), food (n=150) and housefly samples (n=970) collected from two hospitals in Botswana. Characterization based on phenotypic (antimicrobial resistance, biofilm production) and genotypic (

Housefly, Musca domestica L. is a pest of public health importance and is responsible for spreading diseases like typhoid, diarrhoea, plague etc. Indiscriminate reliance on synthetic insecticides has led to development of insecticide resistance and ill effect to humans and nontarget animals. This demands an alternative and safer pest control option. This study evaluates the biological effect of Piper betle L essential oil and its constituent eugenol, eugenol acetate, and β - caryophyllene on the housefly. The major components present in P. betel EO were safrole (44.25%), eugenol (5.16%), β -ca
