Affordable housing is an important form of income security for low-income older persons. This article describes characteristics of older persons waitlisted for either public housing or a housing choice voucher (HCV; previously Section 8) in Portland, Oregon. 358 persons (32% response rate) completed a mailed survey with questions about demographics, health and housing status, food insecurity, and preference for housing with services. Findings indicate that many waitlisted older persons experienced homelessness or housing instability, poor health, high hospital use, and food insecurity. Public

Research indicates that the need for safe housing and the economic resources to maintain safe housing are two of the most pressing concerns among abused women who are planning to or have recently left abusers. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is frequently an immediate cause or precursor to homelessness and housing instability. The aim of the study is to explore abused women's experiences accessing affordable, safe, and stable housing. To achieve the aim, adult female IPV survivors answered questions about: 1) steps that were taken to secure housing; 2) safety issues after leaving the abuser; 3

OBJECTIVE: Recent clinical and policy trends have favored low-demand housing (provision of housing not contingent on alcohol and drug abstinence) in assisting chronically homeless people. This study compared housing, clinical, and service use outcomes of participants with high levels of substance use at time of housing entry and those who reported no substance use.
METHODS: Participants in the outcome evaluation of the 11-site Collaborative Initiative on Chronic Homelessness (N=756), who were housed within 12 months of program entry and received an assessment at time of housing and at least o

Rising homelessness, especially among older adults, has significant ramifications for our health care system. People experiencing homelessness tend to experience worse health and poorer access to needed health care than people with stable housing. Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA), a not-for-profit payer and provider that offers health plans to people dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid, sought to address homelessness among its beneficiaries through a partnership with a local community-based housing organization, Hearth. This partnership led to many CCA members gaining access to permanent

Housing is a pressing problem worldwide and a key determinant of health and wellbeing. The right to adequate housing, as a pillar of the right to an adequate standard of living, means more than a roof to live under. Adequate means the dwelling must fulfill material functions and psychosocial functions, thus contributing to dwellers health and wellbeing. Social housing policies aim to fulfill the right to housing, but frequently fail in fulfilling the right to it being adequate. This study capitalizes on the implementation of a national urban regeneration program in two social housing villas in

The Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program (HPRP) was a federally-funded program in the United States that provided short-term financial and support services to individuals and families who were at-risk or currently experiencing homelessness. There is limited research on factors that predict placement in permanent housing following prevention and rapid rehousing interventions, particularly for single adult populations. The present study examined demographic and program-related predictors of permanent housing upon program exit among two groups of adults enrolled in HPRP in Indiana

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Childhood obesity disproportionately affects low-income and racial-ethnic minority communities that tend to also have poor housing quality and obesogenic neighborhood environments. Yet, evidence on "whole-of-community" interventions that simultaneously improve housing, and neighborhood built and social environments, remains limited. This study examines the early impacts of a decade-long redevelopment of Jordan Downs (JD), a low-income public housing community in Watts, Los Angeles. We assessed effects on children's obesity 2 years in, when roughly one-third of the si

There is limited and incomplete empirical evidence that documents the extent of overlap, or layering, between federal housing programs, including supply-side subsidies, such as the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC), and demand-side rental assistance. Importantly, we know little about how the overlap varies by time, by geography, and in different housing market conditions. This project uses administrative data collected by federal agencies and public housing authorities to describe over time, at the national level, (a) the percentage of rental assistance recipients that reside in LIHTC unit

Recent crises have underscored the importance that housing has in sustaining good health and, equally, its potential to harm health. Considering this and building on Howden-Chapman's early glossary of housing and health and the WHO Housing and Health Guidelines, this paper introduces a range of housing and health-related terms, reflecting almost 20 years of development in the field. It defines key concepts currently used in research, policy and practice to describe housing in relation to health and health inequalities. Definitions are organised by three overarching aspects of housing: affordab

Egg production systems have become subject to heightened levels of scrutiny. Multiple factors such as disease, skeletal and foot health, pest and parasite load, behavior, stress, affective states, nutrition, and genetics influence the level of welfare hens experience. Although the need to evaluate the influence of these factors on welfare is recognized, research is still in the early stages. We compared conventional cages, furnished cages, noncage systems, and outdoor systems. Specific attributes of each system are shown to affect welfare, and systems that have similar attributes are affected

This study examines housing status at the time of hospital discharge in a national sample of 3,502 veterans who were homeless at admission to a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) medical center. A supplemental survey on homelessness was added to the annual VHA inpatient census over a 4-year period (1995 through 1998). Data from this survey were used to identify homeless veterans hospitalized on the final day of the fiscal year and to document their housing status at discharge. A signal detection technique, Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis, was used to identify predictors of housing

The word "homelessness" is not a useful term to explain housing problems experienced by high school-aged youths. The term "housing distress" is preferable because it includes both teenagers who are homeless and those who are at risk of homelessness. Many teenagers feel that they have no place where they belong and seek alternative living arrangements for a variety of reasons. Housing distress is a problem for schools because students have difficulties achieving academic success when they have no consistent, safe place to live. To understand how much or how little housing distress is experience

The residential environment, encompassing housing and neighborhood of residence, is a critical context shaping health and well-being. The 4Cs model delineates four pathways through which residential environments affect health including cost, conditions, consistency, and context, all of which are often compromised for low-income individuals. Affordable housing programs, like public housing, should mitigate negative exposures across the 4Cs but disinvestment has left many public housing developments with maintenance deficiencies and disadvantaged contexts. Through analysis of qualitative intervi

BACKGROUND: Lack of stable, affordable housing is an important social determinant of health. Federal housing assistance may buffer against housing vulnerabilities among low-income households, but research examining the association of housing assistance and cancer care has been limited. We introduce a new linkage of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program-Medicare and US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administrative data.
METHODS: Individuals enrolled in HUD public and assisted housing programs between 2006 and 2021 were linked with cancer diagnoses betwee

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a leading cause of homelessness, yet little evidence exists about effective strategies to assist IPV survivors as they work to avoid homelessness while freeing themselves from abuse. An ongoing demonstration evaluation is examining if and how one promising model assists IPV survivors in obtaining safe and stable housing over time. The Domestic Violence Housing First (DVHF) model involves providing IPV survivors with mobile advocacy and/or flexible funding, depending on individual needs, in order to attain these goals. We hypothesized that those receiving DVHF

OBJECTIVE: Housing First (HF) has been linked to increased tenure in housing for homeless people with mental illness, but the effect of HF on housing stability for people with borderline or lower intellectual functioning has not been examined. This study of homeless adults with mental illness in Toronto, Ontario assessed whether the association between housing stability and HF differed for adults with borderline or lower intellectual functioning, compared to adults with above borderline intellectual functioning.
METHOD: This study included 172 homeless adults with mental illness from the Toro

Housing stability is an important focus in research on homeless people. Although definitions of stable housing differ across studies, the perspective of homeless people themselves is generally not included. Therefore, this study explored the inclusion of satisfaction with the participant's current housing status as part of the definition of housing stability and also examined predictors of housing stability with and without the inclusion of homeless person's perspective. Of the initial cohort consisting of 513 homeless participants who were included at baseline in 2011, 324 (63.2%) were also i

BACKGROUND: Much research has shown an association between homelessness and unstable housing and HIV risk but most has relied on relatively narrow definitions of housing status that preclude a deeper understanding of this relationship. Fewer studies have examined access to housing subsidies and supportive housing programs among low-income populations with different personal characteristics. This paper explores personal characteristics associated with access to housing subsidies and supportive housing, the relationship between personal characteristics and housing status, and the relationship be
