Specific Neural Mechanisms Underlying Humans' Processing of Information Related to Companion Animals: A Comparison with Domestic Animals and Objects.

Humans show neural specificity in processing animal-related information, especially regarding companion animals. However, the underlying cognitive mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study's main objective is to investigate human neural specificity in processing companion animal-related information, compared to other animal types and inanimate objects. Forty participants viewed four image types (companion animals, neutral animals, positive objects, neutral objects) during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans and judged image categories. T-test results showed: 1. Processing

Human fatalities caused by animal attacks: A six-year autopsy study.

Deaths caused by animal attacks in urban as well as rural areas are rising. With dwindling forest cover and with more interaction of animals with humans in day-to-day life, we need to understand the reasons, manner and causes of these fatal events. We studied 151 cases of fatal animal/human conflicts and in particular, the manner and mechanism of causation of injuries with respect to different types of animals. In this region there were more fatal snake bites followed by cattle attacks. Humans are at some risk while in the vicinity of animals whether in the wild or in human settlements. Human/

An operant social self-administration and choice model in rats.

It is difficult to translate results from animal research on addiction to an understanding of the behavior of human drug users. Despite decades of basic research on neurobiological mechanisms of drug addiction, treatment options remain largely unchanged. A potential reason for this is that mechanistic studies using rodent models do not incorporate a critical facet of human addiction: volitional choices between drug use and non-drug social rewards (e.g., employment and family). Recently, we developed an operant model in which rats press a lever for rewarding social interaction with a peer and t

Evidence for the involvement of genetic variation in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) in the etiology of autistic disorders on high-functioning level.

An increasing number of animal studies advert to a substantial role of the neuropeptide oxytocin in the regulation of social attachment and affiliation. Furthermore, animal studies showed anxiety and stress-reduced effects of oxytocin. First human studies confirm these findings in animal studies and implicate a crucial role of oxytocin in human social attachment behavior and in social interactions. Thus, the oxytocin system might be involved in the impairment of social interaction and attachment in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The human oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) represents a plausible

Human Noroviruses Attach to Intestinal Tissues of a Broad Range of Animal Species.

Human noroviruses are the most common nonbacterial cause of gastroenteritis outbreaks, with new variants and genotypes frequently emerging. The origin of these new viruses is unknown; however, animals have been proposed as a potential source, as human noroviruses have been detected in animal species. Here, we investigated the potential of animals to serve as a reservoir of human noroviruses by testing norovirus attachment to formalin-fixed intestinal tissues of a range of potential reservoir animals. We set up a novel method to study norovirus binding using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-la

Genetically-modified-animal models for human infections: the Listeria paradigm.

Several human pathogens exhibit a restricted host-tropism, relying on the species-specific interaction of microbial ligand(s) with host receptor(s). This specificity accounts for some of the difficulties in modeling human infections in animals. The discovery of L. monocytogenes host-specificity and elucidation of the underlying mechanism has led to the generation of transgenic mice expressing one of its human receptors, E-cadherin. This model is presented here as a paradigm of a genetically-modified-animal model for studying a human infectious disease.

The mouse model of Chlamydia genital tract infection: a review of infection, disease, immunity and vaccine development.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common sexually transmitted bacterial infection worldwide. The impact of this pathogen on human reproduction has intensified research efforts to better understand chlamydial infection and pathogenesis. Whilst there are animal models available that mimic many aspects of human chlamydial infection, the mouse is regarded as the most practical and widely used of the models. Studies in mice have greatly contributed to our understanding of the host-pathogen interaction and provided an excellent medium for evaluating vaccines. Here we explore the advantages and disad

Reconsideration of the plague transmission in perspective of multi-host zoonotic disease model with interspecific interaction.

The human-animal interface plays a vital role in the spread of zoonotic diseases, such as plague, which led to the "Black Death", the most serious human disaster in medieval Europe. It is reported that more than 200 mammalian species including human beings are naturally infected with plague. Different species acting as different roles construct the transmission net for Yersinia pestis (plague pathogen), in which rodents are the main natural reservoirs. In previous studies, it focused on individual infection of human or animal, rather than cross-species infection. It is worth noting that rodent

Dark Triad Traits Affect the Perception of Emotions in Animal Calls.

Humans can recognize emotions from vocalisations of various animal species. Our study examined whether human psychological differences in dark personality traits (as measured by SD3) and musician experience affect the decoding of emotions in animal calls. Respondents assessed the situation and the valence and intensity of emotion experienced by the animal in calls of piglets recorded in three social and one painful situation. With increasing psychopathy scores, individuals made more misclassification errors between social and painful calls and also perceived the social calls as more negative.

Application of Human Stem Cells to Model Genetic Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Meniere Disease.

Genetic sensorineural hearing loss and Meniere disease have been associated with rare variations in the coding and non-coding region of the human genome. Most of these variants were classified as likely pathogenic or variants of unknown significance and require functional validation in cellular or animal models. Given the difficulties to obtain human samples and the raising concerns about animal experimentation, human-induced pluripotent stem cells emerged as cellular models to investigate the interaction of genetic and environmental factors in the pathogenesis of inner ear disorders. The gene

Evaluation of the Epidemic Situation of Anthrax in Armenia Over the Last Decade.

INTRODUCTION: Anthrax is a World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH)-listed disease that must be reported upon confirmation based on the Terrestrial Animal Health Code. Anthrax poses a serious health issue for unvaccinated livestock, is a threat to humans through interaction with contaminated livestock and animal products and is endemic in many areas throughout the world, including the Transcaucasian Region. Despite several control and eradication efforts that have been implemented by the government of the Republic of Armenia (RA), sporadic cases of anthrax are still reported. We sought to u

Combined enrichment and pharmaceutical intervention reduces excessive arousal in shelter dogs in a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Environmental stressors in animal shelters may lead to development of excessive arousal, posing risks to adoptability and behavioral euthanasia. Recommendations regarding excessive arousal in shelter dogs include providing pharmaceuticals and enrichment. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess the influence of enrichment and pharmaceutical interventions on shelter dogs (N = 50) displaying excessive arousal from a municipal animal shelter in Texas, United States. Data were collected during 1 week of baseline conditions (days 1-7) and 1 week of treatment (da

Poliovirus and its cellular receptor: a molecular genetic dissection of a virus/receptor affinity interaction.

The ability of a virus to attach to a susceptible host cell is of utmost importance for the initiation of viral life cycle. Cell surface proteins called viral receptors mediate the initial steps of virus attachment and uptake. Poliovirus (PV) is one of the most studied animal viruses and its interaction with its cellular receptor, the human poliovirus receptor (hPVR) has been well characterized. This review will present our current understanding of the PV/hPVR interaction at the genetic and biochemical level. In addition, we will also discuss the implications of the PV/hPVR interaction on PV t

Effects of human and animal-assisted skills training on oxytocin und cortisol levels in patients with borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterised, among other symptoms, by emotional instability and difficulties in regulating proximity to significant others. Many with BPD have difficulties in establishing a trustful therapeutic relationship, which often develop before a background of adverse childhood experiences with caregivers. One way to facilitate therapeutic interaction in psychotherapy incorporates pet animals as "door openers". No study exists, however, that has examined the effect of animal-assisted versus human-guided skills training on neurobiological correlates

Diabetic neuropathy. Human and experimental.

Human diabetic neuropathy consists of various clinical syndromes and it is unlikely that any single aetiological process is responsible for all of them. There is probably a complex interaction of different metabolic factors, microvascular disease, and perhaps even a genetic predisposition and other as yet unidentified environmental factors. Abnormalities of sorbitol and myo-inositol metabolism have been described in animal models and human studies of neuropathy and must be regarded as of major importance, especially since they can be profoundly influenced by blocking the enzyme aldose reductas

Learning From the Beyond-Human Animal: Wildlife Encounters in Veterans With PTSD.

Animal-assisted interventions (AAI) are a type of interaction between humans and other species with a goal of advancing human health. Native American teachings provide a lens of human relations with nature in which beyond-human animals can provide important teachings for human persons. As part of a larger study, Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were introduced to a series of nature and wildlife immersion experiences. In this paper, we report on the use of a journaling exercise in which participants were asked to identify a meaningful animal at a wildlife sanctuary and descri

Adapting Animal-Assisted Therapy Trials to Prison-Based Animal Programs.

Prison-based animal programs have shown promise when it comes to increased sociability, responsibility, and levels of patience for inmates who participate in these programs. Yet there remains a dearth of scientific research that demonstrates the impact of prison-based animal programs on inmates' physical and mental health. Trials of animal-assisted therapy interventions, a form of human-animal interaction therapy most often used with populations affected by depression/anxiety, mental illness, and trauma, may provide models of how prison-based animal program research can have widespread impleme

Mechanisms Underlying Pneumococcal Transmission and Factors Influencing Host-Pneumococcus Interaction: A Review.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (also called pneumococcus) is not only a commensal that frequently colonizes the human upper respiratory tract but also a pathogen that causes pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis. The mechanism of pneumococcal infection has been extensively studied, but the process of transmission has not been fully elucidated because of the lack of tractable animal models. Novel animal models of transmission have enabled further progress in investigating pneumococcal transmission mechanisms including the processes such as pneumococcal shedding, survival in the external environment, and
