Microplastics Prevalence in Different Cetaceans Stranded along the Western Taiwan Strait.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution is of global concern, which poses serious threats to various marine organisms, including many threatened apex predators. In this study, MPs were investigated from nine cetaceans of four different species, comprising one common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), two pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps), one ginkgo-toothed beaked whale (Mesoplodon ginkgodens), and five Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) stranded along the western coast of the Taiwan Strait from the East China Sea based on Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis. Mean abundanc

Respiration rates and inferred mass-specific field metabolic rates decline with body size among five sympatric cetaceans.

Metabolic rates in animals scale allometrically with body mass, a relationship well-established in terrestrial mammals. Whether these scaling laws apply to fully aquatic mammals remains uncertain, due to key physiological and ecological differences. We estimated field metabolic rates (FMRs) for five sympatric cetaceans of varying sizes, inhabiting sub-Arctic Icelandic waters: harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena; mean body length ± s.d = 1.35 ± 0.19 m), white-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris; 2.42 ± 0.17 m), minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata; 7.53 ±  0.82 m), humpback whales

Widespread ecosystem effects of an extreme fresh pulse event in a temperate marine ecosystem.

Extreme climate events are becoming more frequent and intense under climate change, but their impacts on marine food webs are not well understood. In the North Atlantic, salinity anomalies over decadal timescales have been well studied, but extreme freshening has been observed in recent years at a magnitude far greater than prior measurements. Further, short-term fresh pulses and their ecological effects are poorly understood. We integrate recent monitoring data from the New York Bight with long-term datasets to document the ecosystem impacts of a short-term fresh pulse which influenced this r

Population declines and changes in community composition at the world's largest penguin colony.

The Antarctic Peninsula and Scotia Sea are experiencing the greatest pressures from climate change and fisheries in the Southern Ocean, with associated penguin population declines. However, surveys of the South Sandwich Islands in 2011 concluded that numbers there were stable. Zavodovski, the northernmost island in the archipelago, was then hailed as the largest penguin colony in the world. We show that, by 2025, rapid declines of maritime Antarctic chinstrap penguins mean this title has now been ceded to the Adélie penguin colony at Cape Adare, Ross Sea. Over the same period, the subantarctic

Morbillivirus and coronavirus survey in stranded cetaceans, Brazil.

Since 2010, Guiana dolphin morbillivirus (GDMV; family Paramyxoviridae, genus Morbillivirus, species Morbillivirus ceti, syn. Cetacean morbillivirus) is recognized as the cause of death of multiple cetacean species along the Brazilian coast, including an unusual mortality event in Rio de Janeiro state. Coronaviruses of the genus Gammacoronavirus (family Coronaviridae) have been previously detected in cetaceans in the northern hemisphere. After the emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic and with the potential to affec

An assessment of temporal, spatial and taxonomic trends in harmful algal toxin exposure in stranded marine mammals from the U.S. New England coast.

Despite a long-documented history of severe harmful algal blooms (HABs) in New England coastal waters, corresponding HAB-associated marine mammal mortality events in this region are far less frequent or severe relative to other regions where HABs are common. This long-term survey of the HAB toxins saxitoxin (STX) and domoic acid (DA) demonstrates significant and widespread exposure of these toxins in New England marine mammals, across multiple geographic, temporal and taxonomic groups. Overall, 19% of the 458 animals tested positive for one or more toxins, with 15% and 7% testing positive for
