Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread environmental pollutants produced by combustion of fossil fuel and other organic materials. Both experimental animal and human studies have reported the harmful impacts of PAH compounds on fetal growth and neurodevelopment, including verbal IQ of children. Here, we have assessed the association between cognitive function of children and prenatal PAH exposures. The study is part of an ongoing, longitudinal investigation of the health effects of prenatal exposure to air pollution on infants and children in Krakow, Poland. The subjects in thi

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be formed during the refinery processes of crude petroleum. Their removal is of great importance. The same happens with other organic solvents used for the extraction of PAHs (hexane, acetonitrile...), which can be polluted with PAHs. Kinetic and equilibrium batch sorption tests were used to investigate the effect of wood ashes wastes as compared to activated carbon on the sorption of three representative PAHs from n-hexane and acetonitrile. Mussel shell ashes were discarded for batch sorption experiments because they were the only ashes containing P

Although polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are recognized for their carcinogenic, teratogenic, and genotoxic properties, there is a lack of scientific evidence detailing impact of in-utero exposure to PAHs on adverse birth outcomes. Present study is planned to fill this research gap by investigating placental levels of 16 USEPA Priority PAHs and associated health risks for infants. Placental tissue samples were collected from 200 pregnant population and infant anthropometric measures like birth height, weight and head circumference were collected from pediatrician records. The release of petroleum and its constituents, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), into the environment poses a significant global threat due to their toxic, genotoxic, mutagenic, and/or carcinogenic properties. Using indigenous PAH-degrading bacteria to decontaminate the PAHs is an eco-friendly, convenient, and non-expensive way in comparison to other traditional physical and chemical methods. In the present study, several bacteria were isolated from petroleum-contaminated soils using a culture-enrichment technique. Phenanthrene and naphthalene were used as representative example

Among diverse strategies to manage air quality, catalytic oxidation has been a widely used option to mitigate diverse pollutants such as aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), especially benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX). For such applications, TiO2-based catalysts have drawn significant research attention for their prominent photo/thermal catalytic activities and photochemical stability. This review has been organized to elaborate on the recent developments achieved in the thermocatalytic, photocatalytic, and photothermal applications of metal/non-metal doped TiO2 catalysts towards BTX

Wildfire smoke penetrates indoors, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in smoke may accumulate on indoor materials. We developed two approaches for measuring PAHs on common indoor materials: (1) solvent-soaked wiping of solid materials (glass and drywall) and (2) direct extraction of porous/fleecy materials (mechanical air filter media and cotton sheets). Samples are extracted by sonication in dichloromethane and analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Extraction recoveries range from 50-83% for surrogate standards and for PAHs recovered from direct application to isopropan

BACKGROUND: Several industries entailing exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known or suspected carcinogens. A handful of studies have assessed the role of PAHs exposure in prostate cancer risk, but none has examined tumor aggressiveness or the influence of screening practices and detection issues. We aimed to examine the association between lifetime occupational exposure to PAHs and prostate cancer risk.
METHODS: Detailed work histories were collected from 1,929 prostate cancer cases (436 aggressive) and 1,994 controls from Montreal, Canada (2005-2012). Industrial hygieni

Commuters are exposed to high air pollution levels daily, especially in areas with dense traffic. This study examines the commuter's exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, under three different commuting modes: biking, travelling by private car, and riding public transportation means (buses). The study was carried out from 2015 to 2018 including 43 volunteers (15 cyclists, 17 car drivers/passengers, and 11 bus passengers). The personal exposure concentrations to particles smaller than 4-μm aerodynamic diameter (PM4), constituting the respirable

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are ubiquitous contaminants of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and are known to induce biochemical alterations in exposed organisms. Aside from a variety of adverse physiological effects associated with exposure to petroleum products, oils, and oil sludges, little is known about the effects of individual PAH on birds. Acute toxicity of naphthalene, pyrene, and benz[a]anthracene (BAA) was examined in adult northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus). Additionally, subacute (8 d) and subchronic (60 d) studies were conducted to assess alterations in me

The assessment of historical trends in atmospheric deposition of organic contaminants by using peat samples has been reported on several occasions because these samples represent an almost ideal medium for recording temporal changes in organic contaminant deposition rates. The determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in peat samples is complicated due to the high content of organic matter in peat, which affects both extraction efficiency and analytical quality. A rapid and simple method is proposed for the determination of 10 US Environmental Protection Agency indicator PAHs in

The aim of this study was to use environmental monitoring to evaluate occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and biphenyl in an Italian airport. Air was sampled using a quartz fiber filter, a polyurethane foam, and an XAD-2 layer. After extraction with dichloromethane, concentration and purification analyses of 25 PAHs (including biphenyl) were carried out by gas chromatography-ion trap mass spectrometry. In winter 2005, 12 air samples were taken at 120 L/min for 24 hours in three different areas of the airport. PAH levels were found to be generally low. In all invest

We conducted a simultaneous field study of PM2.5-bound particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and aromatic acids (AAs) in a polluted city Zhengzhou to explore the concentration, sources and potential conversion pathways between PAHs and AAs in different seasons. The average concentrations of PM2.5, 28PAHs and 8AAs during the sampling period were 77 µg/m3, 75 ng/m3, and 283 ng/m3, respectively. The concentration of both 28PAHs and 8AAs were highest in winter and lowest in summer with ratios of 6.3 and 2.3, respectively. PAHs with 5-7 rings were the main components of PAHs (52%), fo

Within the framework of the assessment of the genotoxic potential of environment samples the Salmonella-microsome-test (Ames-test) is often used as a screening-test. It is one of the most applied biotest systems and possesses a large scientific acceptance. Because most environment samples are mixtures of various substances, possible effects resulting from the combination should be taken into account with regard to the mutagenic potential. In this context we investigated eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons each combined with six halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons as to their mutagenicity in

The wood preservation industry has contaminated numerous sites with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). The aim of this study was to investigate the use of electrochemical oxidation (EO), without chemical additives, for in situ degradation of PAHs in soil co-contaminated with arsenic. Two 1 m3 boxes, each containing a 20 cm layer of contaminated sand overlaid with 20 cm of peat, were equipped with iron electrodes and placed outdoors. EO was applied using a pulsating direct current with alternating polarity, and its impact on PAH concentrations in soil and soil solution, as well as on the a

Lennard-Jones (L-J) parameters, i.e. collision diameter and well depth, of benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) interacting with bath gases helium and nitrogen are studied theoretically in this work. The results of three different computing methods, called SA, σ-ε, η-ξ methods respectively, are compared with literature data. The SA method determines effective L-J parameters from the spherically averaged intermolecular potentials; the σ-ε method averages L-J parameters obtained from different relative orientations of interacting partners; and the η-ξ method uses an orientation-av

The adsorption of helium on charged hexabenzocoronene (Hbc, C42H18), a planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecule of D6h symmetry, was investigated by a combination of high-resolution mass spectrometry and classical and quantum computational methods. The ion abundance of HenHbc+ complexes versus size n features prominent local anomalies at n = 14, 38, 68, 82, and a weak one at 26, indicating that for these "magic" sizes, the helium evaporation energies are relatively large. Surprisingly, the mass spectra of anionic HenHbc- complexes feature a different set of anomalies, namely at n
