Uterus didelphys with blind hemivagina and ipsilateral renal agenesis (Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome) suspected on the presence of hydrocolpos on prenatal sonography.

We report the case of a female neonate with ipsilateral renal agenesis and uterus didelphys with blind hemivagina, also known as Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich (HWW) syndrome. Prenatal sonography revealed the absence of the left kidney and a retrovesical cystic lesion suspected as hydrometrocolpos. Postnatal evaluation confirmed that the cystic lesion was a hydrocolpos associated with double uterus and blind hemivagina (HWW syndrome). HWW syndrome can be suspected prenatally if a retrovesical cystic lesion is detected in a female fetus with unilateral absence of kidney.

Pre- and post-operative work-up in patients affected by early cervical cancer and eligible for fertility-sparing treatment: role of MRI with saline hydrocolpos.

Nowadays young women affected by early invasive uterine cervical cancer (stage IA2-IB1) may be offered a fertility-sparing treatment: the radical trachelectomy with pelvic lymph node dissection. This procedure consists in surgical removal of cervix uteri, proximal parametrial tissue, and vaginal cuff. The morphology and the functions of corpus uteri are preserved. Women candidates for trachelectomy must be closely selected. Gynecologist oncologist needs an imaging modality that can accurately value the tumoral diameter and which can demonstrate proximal extension of tumor to ensure surgical cl

Pyocolpos: diagnosis and treatment.

Pyocolpos is a rare complication of hydrocolpos. Hydrocolpos usually presents during adolescence and is associated with an imperforate hymen. The following is a case of a 3-month-old girl with pyocolpos. Her history was significant for a urinary tract infection (UTI) at 7 weeks of age. The authors believe that her UTI was caused by urinary retention secondary to hydrocolpos. A complete evaluation may have prevented the complication of pyocolpos.

Continent urinary reconstruction in ischiopagus tripus conjoined twins.

The principle of the continent urinary reservoir involves use of a variety of intestinal segments providing continence, a mechanism of antireflux and a catheterizable stoma in either an abdominal or pelvic location. This concept was used to create a continent urinary reservoir in a 3-year-old former ischiopagus tripus conjoined twin. The solitary renal unit had been drained into a hydrocolpos with an antirefluxing ureteral reimplantation at separation. The patient remained incontinent through the urogenital sinus. At subsequent reconstruction the posterior aspect of the hydrocolpos was tubular

An unusual case of urinary retention in a competitive gymnast.

Hydrocolpos is the accumulation of blood behind an imperforate hymen. Patients often present in early adolescence with cyclic abdominal pain. We present the case of an elite gymnast who, after 6 months of symptoms and a series of incorrect diagnoses, was diagnosed with hydrocolpos. It is likely that the patient's extraordinary training regimen contributed to the difficulty in diagnosis.

Clinical experience with persistent cloaca.

PURPOSE: Persistent cloaca is one of the most severe types of anorectal malformation. Appropriate initial drainage is difficult due to their various malformations and hydrocolpos or dilated urinary bladder. Corrective surgery also differs among individual patients. We describe our experiences with the surgical management of children with persistent cloaca. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 16 children diagnosed with persistent cloaca at Asan Medical Center. RESULTS: Sixteen patients were managed in their neonatal period. Twelve patients had enlarged bladder or vagina at birth. Three patie

Persistent cloaca presenting with a perineal cyst: Prenatal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging findings.

A 40-year-old, primigravid woman presented at 23 weeks of gestation for evaluation of an extra-abdominal echogenic cystic mass of the fetus. Amniocentesis revealed a karyotype of 46,XX. Prenatal ultrasound showed a two-vessel umbilical cord, hydrocolpos, and distended bladder, urethra, and colon, and a perineal cystic mass. The kidneys and amniotic fluid amount were normal. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging revealed ascites, hydrocolpos, distended urinary bladder and colon, high rectum, and a perineal cyst. The fetus postnatally manifested persistent cloaca. The perineum was distended and smoot

Pallister-Hall syndrome and McKusick-Kaufmann syndrome: one entity?

The Pallister-Hall syndrome is characterised by specific facial anomalies, postaxial polydactyly, imperforate anus, and brain anomalies including a diencephalic hamartoblastoma. The hallmarks of the McKusick-Kaufmann syndrome are hydrocolpos owing to vaginal atresia, postaxial polydactyly, imperforate anus, and congenital heart defects. We report a patient with the unique features of hydrocolpos, postaxial polydactyly, and hypothalamic hamartoblastoma and discuss the different aetiological considerations of both syndromes and implications for clinical management.

Hydrometrocolpos in neonate due to distal vaginal atresia.

Hydrocolpos is the result of vaginal obstruction and can become an emergency in the newborn period. The treatment of imperforate hymen is well defined, but the treatment of vaginal atresia is more complex. We encountered two cases of hydrocolpos secondary to distal vaginal atresia, that were operated on in the first days of life. One baby had distal atresia without persistance of urogenital sinus. Surgery combining abdominal perineal approaches and a posterior vaginoplasty was carried out. The second baby had hydrocolpos with persistance of urogenital sinus. Drainage through the sinus was unsu

Hydrometrocolpos, postaxial polydactyly, congenital heart disease, and anomalies of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts: a rare autosomal recessive syndrome.

Nine cases with the hydrometrocolpospolydactyly syndrome (4 males, 5 females) from four unrelated families are presented. Leading symptoms of this rare disorder were hydrocolpos and postaxial polydactyly. Three affected girls had urinary hydrocolpos without vaginal septum or imperforate hymen, one had partial vaginal atresia, and one had no hydrometrocolpos. Glandular hypospadias and prominent scrotal raphe are added to the spectrum of malformations in this disorder in males. The literature is reviewed and problems in genetic counseling in this autosomal recessive disorder are discussed.

Congenital imperforate hymen in a newborn presenting with vaginal protrusion and abdominal distension: a rare case report.

Imperforate hymen is a rare neonatal anomaly that can cause hydrocolpos and urinary obstruction. We report a newborn girl who presented on day three with abdominal distension and was found to have severe hydrocolpos from an imperforate hymen, leading to bilateral hydronephrosis but with preserved renal function. A hymenal incision effectively drained the accumulated secretions, resulting in rapid clinical improvement and complete resolution on follow-up imaging. Hydrocolpos occurs due to fluid accumulation behind a vaginal obstruction such as an imperforate hymen, and early recognition is esse

Vaginal reconstruction for distal vaginal atresia without anorectal malformation: is the approach different?

INTRODUCTION: Distal vaginal atresia is a rare condition and treatment approaches are varied, usually driven by symptoms. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed to identify patients with distal vaginal atresia without anorectal malformation. Data collected included age and symptoms at presentation, type and number of operations, and associated anomalies. RESULTS: Eight patients were identified. Four presented at birth with a hydrocolpos and four presented with hematometrocolpos after 12 years of age. Number of operations per patient ranged from one to seven with an average of three. T

Hydrometrocolpos: diagnosis and follow-up by ultrasound--a case report.

Hydrometrocolpos is accumulation of secretions in the vagina and uterus, caused by excessive intrauterine stimulation of the infant's cervical mucous glands by maternal oestrogen in the presence of an intact hymen (Wilson et al 1978). Hydrocolpos is dilatation of the vagina proximal to a congenital obstruction. If the uterus is also dilated, the condition is called hydrometrocolpos. Most cases of hydrocolpos are associated with an imperforate hymen that forms a thin bulging membrane between the labia. Though many cases of hydrometrocolpos have been reported in literature, there is no case repo

McKusick-Kaufman syndrome: report of an instructive family.

We report on two sisters and their brother, all of whom are affected by McKusick-Kaufman syndrome. This sibship confirms autosomal recessive inheritance and the occurrence of the syndrome in Melanesians. It also demonstrates multisystem involvement in both sexes and illustrates difficulties in the diagnosis and management of hydrocolpos.

Prenatal pelvic MRI: additional clues for assessment of urogenital obstructive anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound prenatal evaluation of pelvic cystic mass can be challenging. After having ruled out a cloaca anterior to a large hydrocolpos, it is important to differentiate between combined urogenital anomalies such as urogenital sinus and isolated genital anomalies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed the charts of 13 women referred for a third trimester pelvic MRI for cystic pelvic mass discovered in second trimester ultrasound. We evaluated MRI compared with postnatal surgical findings in order to determine clues for improving prenatal diagnoses. RESULTS: MRI excluded the diagnosis
