V-A ECMO for refractory malignant arrhythmia and cardiogenic shock following acute hydrofluoric acid burns: a case report and pathophysiology review.

BACKGROUND: Hydrofluoric acid (HF) exposure causes severe systemic toxicity through fluoride ion-mediated electrolyte disturbances, leading to life-threatening cardiovascular complications. While extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been reported for respiratory failure in HF poisoning, its use for refractory malignant arrhythmias and cardiogenic shock remains extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old male worker sustained extensive HF burns (30% of total body surface area) following an industrial accident. Despite aggressive electrolyte correction and blood purification, he

Comparative Evaluation of Dental Clinical Surface Treatments for Polyetheretherketone with Airborne-Particle Abrasion, Hydrofluoric Acid Etching, and Handheld Nonthermal Plasma Activation on Long-Term Bond Performance.

Polyaryletherketone (PAEK) materials, including polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), possess excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility; however, their inherently low surface energy limits effective bonding with resin cements. This study investigated the effects of hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching and handheld nonthermal plasma (HNP) treatment on enhancing the adhesive performance of PAEK surfaces. Disk-shaped PEEK (BP) and PEKK (PK) specimens were divided into four groups: APA (airborne-particle abrasion), PLA (nonthermal plasma treatment), LHF (5.0% HF), and

Characteristic fatigue strength and reliability of dental glass-ceramics: Effect of distinct surface treatments - Hydrofluoric acid etching and silane treatment vs one-step self-etching ceramic primer.

The aim of this study was to mechanically characterize through flexural fatigue test two CAD-CAM glass-ceramics according to distinct surface etching protocols. To do so, feldspathic (FELD) and lithium disilicate (LD) glass ceramics were subjected to different surface treatments: (1) control - no treatment (Ctrl); (2) conventional protocol etching with 5% hydrofluoric acid followed by silane coupling agent application (HF + SIL; Monobond N, Ivoclar); or (3) using a self-etching ceramic primer (E&P; Monobond Etch & Prime, Ivoclar). Ceramic discs (N = 120; Ø = 12 mm; thickness = 1.2 mm) were pro

Case Report: Ultra-early tangential excision combined with negative pressure wound therapy as a novel surgical detoxification strategy for severe hydrofluoric acid burns complicated by intractable hypocalcemia.

INTRODUCTION: Severe hydrofluoric acid (HF) burns are life-threatening due to the rapid systemic absorption of fluoride ions, which precipitate profound hypocalcemia and fatal arrhythmias. Traditional conservative neutralization therapies often fail to halt the continuous absorption of toxins from deep necrotic tissues in high-concentration exposures. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 40-year-old male presenting with severe HF burns (20% total body surface area) following exposure to 40% HF. The patient rapidly developed intractable hypocalcemia (Ca2+ 0.48 mmol/L) and experienced 12 episodes of

Chemical burns caused by trifluoroacetic acid.

BACKGROUND: Trifluoroacetic acid is a very strong carboxylic acid. The acid has been suspected to have similar toxic effects as hydrofluoric acid on skin contact. Hydrofluoric acid is highly toxic, owing to skin penetration by fluoride ions. A spill of hydrofluoric acid on the skin may be fatal. As trifluoroacetic acid contains fluorine, patients with chemical burns caused by trifluoroacetic acid have been given particular attention when treated in the hospital. OBJECTIVES: To gather the known cases of trifluoroacetic acid burns from our department to give an overview of how they were exposed

Asthma onset after exposure to fluorinated hydrocarbons in the presence of combustion.

Fluorinated hydrocarbons, which can thermally degrade into toxic hydrofluoric acid, are widely used as, for example, cooling agents in refrigerators and air conditioning systems and as medical aerosol propellants. Hydrofluoric acid is a known causative agent of irritant-induced asthma. We report on two patients with asthma initiation shortly after exposure to fluorinated hydrocarbon-based cooling agents while welding or smoking cigarettes in a confined space. Both cases developed respiratory symptoms and headache and later demonstrated nonspecific bronchial hyperresponsiveness. In follow-up, a

ZnF2-Assisted Synthesis of Highly Luminescent InP/ZnSe/ZnS Quantum Dots for Efficient and Stable Electroluminescence.

High-quality InP-based quantum dots (QDs) have become very promising, environmentally benign light emitters for display applications, but their synthesis generally entails hazardous hydrofluoric acid. Here, we present a highly facile route to InP/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell/shell QDs with a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield. As the key additive, the inorganic salt ZnF2 mildly reacts with carboxylic acid at a high temperature and in situ generates HF, which eliminates surface oxide impurities, thus facilitating epitaxial shell growth. The resulting InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs exhibit a narrower emission

Advances in Morphology Control of Through-Glass via Wet Etching for High-Performance Glass-Based Packaging.

Through-glass vias (TGVs) are important high-aspect-ratio structures for glass-based advanced integration, and their wet-etching morphology significantly influences metallization quality, electrical performance, and reliability. This review establishes a process-morphology-performance framework to analyze morphology control strategies in TGV wet etching. Existing approaches are classified according to their morphology regulation mechanisms, including conventional hydrofluoric acid/buffered hydrofluoric acid etching, material modification, assisted etching, laser-induced selective etching, and

Effect of Silyl Ether Bulk on Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer-Based Sensing of Extant Hydrogen Fluoride for G-Series Nerve Agent Detection.

Luminescence-based sensing provides a method for the rapid detection of nerve agents. Previous approaches have generally focused on sensing materials containing a nucleophilic group that can react with the electrophilic phosphorus atom found in nerve agents. Herein we report an alternative approach for the detection of phosphonofluoridate-based G-series nerve agents that utilizes the fact they contain hydrogen fluoride. We have developed silylated sensing materials based on an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reporter compound, 2-[benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl]phenol. Thin films of

Comprehensive spectroscopic and morphological analysis of the effects exerted by different acids on Pig bone: Forensic aspect.

Demineralization of the chemically treated pig shoulder bone in hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, and acetic acid was monitored by ATR-FTIR, Raman, and LIBS spectroscopies and SEM-EDX technique. SEM-EDX analysis showed reduced calcium and phosphorus content after the treatment with acids and erosion of the overall morphology of the bone compared to the sample kept in water. Alterations in bone structure during the 14-day-long immersion in acid solutions indicated significant chemical changes in the obtained spectra. Fourier deconvolution applied in the amide I (1700-1600 cm-1), phosphate (900-1200 c

Study on Process Optimization and Mechanism of Quartz Sand Acid Leaching and Purification.

The occurrence characteristics of impurities and the precise technologies used for their removal are the main factors limiting the high-end applications of quartz sand. To simultaneously achieve ultrahigh purity and a high yield while incorporating a sustainable waste acid treatment strategy, quartz sand (SP1) from India was selected as the research material. A stepwise experimental scheme involving single-acid and mixed-acid treatments was adopted to optimize the purification conditions, incorporating a complete process of pretreatment, acid leaching, and post-treatment along with a defined w

Spacecraft Maximum Allowable Concentrations for Hydrogen Fluoride.

BACKGROUND: Spacecraft maximum allowable concentrations (SMACs) provide guidance on allowable chemical exposures for nominal and emergency situations aboard spacecraft. SMACs are set to mitigate or preclude potential crew health effects and performance degradation. Hydrogen fluoride (HF) gas is highly irritating. Inhaled HF produces irritation primarily in the upper respiratory tract. HF is not routinely present in spacecraft atmospheres. However, it can be produced in spacecraft due to overheating or combustion events involving materials containing fluorinated organics.METHODS: Toxicological
