Iron plaque-mediated control of GenX accumulation by size-dependent α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles in hydroponic lettuce.

This study elucidates the regulatory role of distinct particle sizes (20 nm and 200 nm) of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) on the migration of the emerging perfluorinated substitute hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA, GenX) in lettuce (Lactuca sativa). Our key findings demonstrate that both sizes of α-Fe2O3 NPs significantly enhance iron plaque (IP) formation on root surfaces, leading to markedly reduced GenX accumulation in roots. Specifically, compared to the GenX-only control, treatments with 20 nm and 200 nm α-Fe2O3 NPs substantially decreased root GenX content by 82.4% and 79.0%, r

Root Surface Electrochemical Properties Correlate with Salt Tolerance and Sodium Adsorption in Miscanthus Accessions: A Hydroponic Study.

Soil salinization threatens global agriculture, yet the mechanisms of salt tolerance in bioenergy crops like Miscanthus remain poorly understood. While root surface electrochemistry has been studied in crop species, its effect on salt tolerance among Miscanthus accessions remains underexplored. Therefore, this study examined whether root surface electrochemical properties are associated with differential salt tolerance and Na+ adsorption in eight Miscanthus accessions. Hydroponically grown plants were subjected to 1% NaCl for three weeks. Salt-tolerant accessions (394, 390, 422, 401) showed si

Iron Solubility and Uptake in Fava Bean and Maize as a Function of Iron Chelates under Alkaline Hydroponic Conditions.

Iron-EDTA becomes unstable above pH 6.5, resulting in competition among metal ions (Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn) for EDTA and reduced Fe availability. This study examined nutrient precipitation dynamics and interactions between chelated and sulfate forms of Zn, Mn, and Cu with Fe-EDTA in fava bean and maize under increasing alkalinity (0, 5, and 15 mM NaHCO3). In fava bean, chelated micronutrients significantly increased shoot Fe, P, and Zn concentrations and improved metabolic activity and oxidative stress tolerance. Maize was more sensitive to alkalinity but showed similar nutrient responses at 5 mM

Synergistic Effects of Polystyrene Nanoplastics and Cadmium on the Metabolic Processes and Their Accumulation in Hydroponically Grown Lettuce (Lactuca sativa).

Plastic contamination in agricultural systems is an emerging concern. While current research suggests low direct toxicity, the consequences from interactions between nanoplastics and copresent contaminants are poorly understood. In this study, the synergistic effects of cadmium (Cd) and polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NP) on the growth and physiological responses of hydroponically grown Lactuca sativa (lettuce) were examined. Coexposure significantly increased the accumulation of Cd and PS NP by 61 and 67% in lettuce shoots compared with single-contaminant exposure. Metabolomic analysis showed th

Microbial community characterization of multi-crop growouts in the XROOTS aeroponic-hydroponic system on the International Space Station.

Plant growth systems tested on the International Space Station (ISS) are small-area growth units that mostly use solid media. With NASA's plan to send astronauts on long-duration exploration missions, there is a need to produce larger amounts of fresh food with limited upmass and resources. The eXposed Root On-Orbit Test System (XROOTS) is an aeroponic-hydroponic nutrient delivery system designed for exploration missions and was tested on the ISS. Post-harvest samples were returned for microbiological analyses of the plant leaves, roots, and fruit from lettuce, mizuna mustard, wheat, radish, t

Differential accumulation of clenbuterol hydrochloride in vegetables under hydroponic exposure: Physiological responses and health risk analysis.

Clenbuterol hydrochloride (CB), an illicit feed additive, has been detected in the environment and may contaminate edible vegetables, posing potential health risks to humans. This study investigated the impacts of CB exposure on the growth, physiology, and health risk of four vegetables (Brassica napus, Lactuca sativa, Spinacia oleracea, and Daucus carota) using hydroponic experiments. CB exposure inhibited vegetable growth and photosynthetic activities. Under short-term exposure, high CB concentrations significantly reduced dry weight, while prolonged exposure partially mitigated these inhibi

Exploring the Effects of Magnesium Deficiency on the Quality Constituents of Hydroponic-Cultivated Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) Leaves.

Magnesium (Mg) plays important roles in photosynthesis, sucrose partitioning, and biomass allocation in plants. However, the specific mechanisms of tea plant response to Mg deficiency remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of Mg deficiency on the quality constituents of tea leaves. Our results showed that the short-term (7 days) Mg deficiency partially elevated the concentrations of polyphenols, free amino acids, and caffeine but decreased the contents of chlorophyll and Mg. However, long-term (30 days) Mg-deficient tea displayed decreased contents of these constituents. Pa

Hydroponic phytoremediation of Cd, Cr, Ni, As, and Fe: can Helianthus annuus hyperaccumulate multiple heavy metals?

Sundance sunflowers were subjected to contaminated solutions containing 3, 4, or 5 heavy metals, with and without EDTA. The sunflowers exhibited a metal uptake preference of Cd=Cr>Ni, Cr>Cd>Ni>As and Fe>>As>Cd>Ni>Cr without EDTA and Cr>Cd>Ni, Fe>>As>Cd>Cr>Ni with EDTA. As uptake was not affected by other metals, but it decreased Cd and Ni concentration in the stems. The presence of Fe improved the translocation of the other metals regardless of whether EDTA was present. In general, EDTA served as a hindrance to metal uptake. For the experiment with all five heavy metals, EDTA decreased Cd in t

Effect of iron plaque on antibiotic uptake and metabolism in water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic Forsk.) grown in hydroponic culture.

Ferrous ion was added to the culture solution, followed by the introduction of tetracyclines (TCs), to explore the effect of iron plaque (IP) on the uptake and translocation of TCs by water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic Forsk.). The adsorption amount of TCs on the root surface positively correlated with the amount of IP, except for doxycycline and minocycline. The bioconcentration factor of TCs in roots increased and fitted well with the amount of IP. The concentration of TCs in acrial tissues was three to four orders of magnitude lower than that in roots, and the translocation factor of TCs also f

Formation of biologically active benzodiazepine metabolites in Arabidopsis thaliana cell cultures and vegetable plants under hydroponic conditions.

The use of recycled water for agricultural irrigation comes with the concern of exposure to crops by contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs). The concentration of CECs in plant tissues will depend on uptake, translocation and metabolism in plants. However, relatively little is known about plant metabolism of CECs, particularly under chronic exposure conditions. In this study, metabolism of the pharmaceutical diazepam was investigated in Arabidopsis thaliana cells and cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and radish (Raphanus sativus) seedlings grown in hydroponic solution following acute (7 d)/high conc

Hydroponic modulation of Sonchus oleraceus L. leaf composition: impact of NPK balance on nutritious attributes and biological effects.

BACKGROUND: Sonchus oleraceus L. (common sowthistle) is a wild leafy vegetable with recognized culinary and pharmacological potential. In hydroponics, controlled nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) imbalances act as an agronomic eustress (positive stress) that stimulates the defensive accumulation of secondary metabolites, thereby enhancing the leaves' biological value. Aiming to exploit this modulation, we evaluated the impact of varying concentrations of N (100-200 mg L-1), P (47-105 mg L-1), and K (250-525 mg L-1) on hydroponic cultivation of Sonchus oleraceus leaves, based on p

Monitoring the Uptake and Localization of Organic Compounds in Plant Tissues Using a Hydroponic 14C-radiolabelling Assay and Phosphor Imaging.

Phytoremediation, the use of plants to mitigate environmental contaminants, offers a sustainable and cost-effective approach to cleaning contaminated sites. Developing methods that aid in elucidating the mechanisms behind plant uptake and metabolism of pollutants is crucial for improving phytoremediation practices. This article describes a method to assess the uptake and transformation of organic contaminants by plants using radiolabeled compounds. 14C-labelled organic compounds, such as model 14C-naphthenic acids, are used to trace their absorption, translocation, localization, and metabolism

Response of antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes to tetracyclines and copper in substrate-free hydroponic microcosms with Myriophyllum aquaticum.

Constructed wetlands for antibiotics and heavy metals removal have become important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and heavy metal resistance genes (MRGs), especially in the substrates. Here, substrate-free hydroponic microcosms of Myriophyllum aquaticum were established; tetracyclines (TCs) and Cu(II) were added to evaluate the behaviours of ARGs and MRGs in the microcosms. Several ARGs, MRGs, and mobile genetic elements (MGE) were detected in the biofilms attached to the plants, ranging from 0.5 to 2.3 × 108 copies/g dry weight. ARGs and MRGs exhibited higher relative abund

Hydroponic grown tobacco plants respond to zinc oxide nanoparticles and bulk exposures by morphological, physiological and anatomical adjustments.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are the third highest in terms of global production among the various inorganic nanoparticles, and there are concerns because of their worldwide availability and accumulation in the environment. In contrast, zinc is an essential element in plant growth and metabolism, and ZnO NPs (nano-ZnO) may have unknown interactions with plants due to their small sizes as well as their particular chemical and physical characteristics. The present study examined the effect of nano-ZnO (25nm) and bulk or natural form (<1000nm, bulk-ZnO), compared with zinc in the ionic form (Zn

Co-application of selenite and phosphate reduces arsenite uptake in hydroponically grown rice seedlings: toxicity and defence mechanism.

The study empirically evaluates the abatement of As(III) uptake in rice seedlings (7d), in presence of Se and phosphate (P) under hydroponic condition. Positive correlation between As(III) translocation to the shoots of As(III) and P treated seedlings, shows P dependent As(III) translocation in rice. Whereas, presence of both P (5 and 10μgml(-1)) and (0.75μgml(-1)) of Se significantly reduces the As(III) uptake in rice seedlings. Application of Se alone also reduces As(III) uptake both in shoots and roots significantly, however, the seedlings suffers from lipid peroxidation. Among all the stud
