Distribution of micro-essential (Fe, Cu, Zn) and toxic (Hg) metals in tissues of two nutritionally distinct hydrothermal shrimps.

Hydrothermal ecosystems of the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) are dominated by shrimps and mussels that are naturally exposed to elevated levels of heavy metals providing unique in situ laboratories for ecotoxicological investigations. This study reports on the tissue compartmentalization of both micro-essential (Fe, Zn, Cu) and toxic metals (Hg) in two nutritionally distinct cariddean vent shrimps: Rimicaris exoculata and Mirocaris fortunata, in order to shed light on organism-biota interactions at hydrothermal vents. High metal concentrations in shrimps confirmed extreme exposure levels at both ge

Biomedical Potential of the Deep-Sea Vent Mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus: Integrating Immunity, Bioadhesion, Biomineralization, and Targeted Transcriptomic Reanalysis.

The deep sea harbors a substantial proportion of the ocean's unexplored biological and chemical diversity, while hydrothermal vent ecosystems expose resident organisms to unusual combinations of hydrostatic pressure, steep chemical gradients, reduced compounds, and elevated metal concentrations. This Review examines the deep-sea vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus, a dominant species at Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal fields, as a source of biological mechanisms and molecular systems with potential biomedical relevance. We integrate three areas that have largely developed separately in the lite

Linking Zetaproteobacterial diversity and substratum type in iron-rich microbial mats from the Lucky Strike hydrothermal field (EMSO-Azores observatory).

Zetaproteobacteria have been reported in different marine and terrestrial environments all over the globe. They play an essential role in marine iron-rich microbial mats, as one of their autotrophic primary producers, oxidizing Fe(II) and producing Fe-oxyhydroxides with different morphologies. Here, we study and compare the Zetaproteobacterial communities of iron-rich microbial mats from six different sites of the Lucky Strike Hydrothermal Field through the use of the Zetaproteobacterial operational taxonomic unit (ZetaOTU) classification. We report for the first time the Zetaproteobacterial c

Monitoring air pollutants in urbanized hydrothermal areas: challenges and benefits of traditional measurement strategies.

Carbon- and sulfur-bearing gases are emitted at relevant amounts from hydrothermal manifestations at Tivoli Terme (Latium, central Italy), where different potential anthropogenic contaminant sources also occur. This study presents a geochemical dataset including CO2, CH4, SO2, and H2S concentrations and δ13C-CO2 and δ13C-CH4 values measured in air at the center of Tivoli town. The main aim was to evaluate the impact on air quality of hydrothermal manifestations and anthropogenic activities employing a traditional stationary monitoring strategy. The analytical results reveal significant air con

Enrichment of electrotrophic microorganisms from contrasting shallow-sea hydrothermal environments in bioelectrochemical reactors.

INTRODUCTION: Hydrothermal vents are inhabited by electrotrophic microorganisms, which are capable of oxidizing extracellular compounds, such as metals, to power their metabolisms. However, their diversity is poorly known, especially in shallow-sea hydrothermal vents where it has not been extensively studied. Bioelectrochemical reactors can be used to investigate such electrotrophic diversity by providing an electrode as an electron donor. METHODS: Here, a total of 60 different reactors were set up and inoculated with either a microbial community coming from the shallow, acidic (ca. pH 5.5) a

Elevated heterotrophic activity in Guaymas Basin hydrothermal plumes influences deep-sea carbon cycling.

Deep-sea hydrothermal plumes are characterized by chemoautotrophic production fueled by the oxidation of reduced inorganic substrates. Recently, organic carbon cycling was proposed, but the metabolic fate of organic carbon is unconstrained. Here, we investigate organic carbon metabolisms in and around a hydrothermal plume to constrain the impacts of hydrothermal vents on deep-sea carbon cycling. Acetate and methanol are detected throughout the water column and are rapidly metabolized in Guaymas Basin waters. Heterotrophic production, up to 7.69 µg C L-1 d-1, greatly exceeds chemoautotrophic pr

Cryptic species of Archinome (Annelida: Amphinomida) from vents and seeps.

Since its description from the Galapagos Rift in the mid-1980s, Archinome rosacea has been recorded at hydrothermal vents in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Only recently was a second species described from the Pacific Antarctic Ridge. We inferred the identities and evolutionary relationships of Archinome representatives sampled from across the hydrothermal vent range of the genus, which is now extended to cold methane seeps. Species delimitation using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) recovered up to six lineages, whereas concatenated datasets (COI, 16S, 28S and ITS1

Hawaiian geothermal fumaroles contain diverse and novel viruses.

UNLABELLED: Viral community structure is known to influence the evolution of microbes in diverse and complex environments. While the diversity of microbes and their viruses have been metagenomically explored in terrestrial hot springs and hydrothermal vent systems, other volcanic features remain remarkably understudied. Fumaroles (steam vents) are geothermal features that heat groundwater with magma, releasing heated water vapor and volcanic gases, such as CO2 and H2S. Fumaroles are physicochemically dynamic compared to terrestrial hot springs-temperatures and gas emissions fluctuate rapidly w

A regulatory hydrogenase gene cluster observed in the thioautotrophic symbiont of Bathymodiolus mussel in the East Pacific Rise.

The mytilid mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus lives in the deep-sea hydrothermal vent regions due to its relationship with chemosynthetic symbiotic bacteria. It is well established that symbionts reside in the gill bacteriocytes of the mussel and can utilize hydrogen sulfide, methane, and hydrogen from the surrounding environment. However, it is observed that some mussel symbionts either possess or lack genes for hydrogen metabolism within the single-ribotype population and host mussel species level. Here, we found a hydrogenase cluster consisting of additional H2-sensing hydrogenase subunits

Microbial Evolution: Chlamydial Creatures from the Deep.

A metagenomic study of marine sediments from a hydrothermal vent field in the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge revealed wider diversity amongst members of the phylum Chlamydiae than was previously known. Unlike known chlamydiae, some of the newly described marine-sediment species may be potentially free-living.

The visibility of 350 degrees C black-body radiation by the shrimp Rimicaris exoculata and man.

The eye of the 'eyeless' shrimp Rimicaris exoculata is unusual in having no image-forming optics and a high concentration of rhodopsin. The shrimps swarm around 350 degrees C hydrothermal 'black smoker' vents in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. There is no other known source of visible light in the shrimp's environment. The spectral sensitivity of rhodopsin is well matched to typical spectra of bioluminescence of organisms found at lesser depths, but other animals detect such emissions without the unusual features of the R. exoculata eye. These two features are most easily understood as an adaptation f

The Host-Symbiont-Pathogen Triad in Bathymodiolus azoricus: The Multifunctional Gill at the Deep-Sea Interface.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps sustain highly productive animal communities through chemosynthetic symbioses, among which bathymodioline mussels are prominent examples. Bathymodioline gill bacteriocytes accommodate intracellular chemosynthetic symbionts, including sulfur- and/or methane-oxidizing bacteria depending on the host species, while remaining sheltered in an epithelium continuously exposed to environmental microorganisms, creating a fundamental immunological problem: how can an innate defense system remain effective without eliminating the microbial partners on which host

Hydrothermal scenario for amino acids and sulfur-containing amino acids formation.

The chemical evolution of amino acids, especially sulfur-containing ones, requires appropriate conditions and natural sources to provide starting prebiotic compounds. In the present study hydrothermal vents, volcanoes and oceans were chosen as a plausible environment, where prebiotic reactions take place. The suggested reaction network starts only with three compounds - water, hydrogen cyanide/formamide and hydrogen sulfide. The present study suggests one-pot hydrothermal experiment in laboratory conditions to demonstrate some vital prebiotic precursors formation. The reaction pathways from st

The Potential of Artificial Cells Functioning under In Situ Deep-Sea Conditions.

Artificial cells with reconstructed cellular functions could serve as practical protocell models for studying the early cellular life on the Earth. Investigating the viability of protocell models in extreme environments where life may have arisen is important for advancing origin-of-life research. Here, we tested the survivability of lipid membrane vesicles in deep-sea environments. The vesicles were submerged in the deep-sea floor with a human-occupied vehicle. Although most of the vesicles were broken, some vesicles maintained a spherical shape after the dives. When a cell-free protein synth

Advancing the Resolution of the Sulfur Compound Disproportionation Puzzle in Dissulfuribacter Thermophilus S69ᵀ Through Quantitative Label-Free Comparative Proteomics.

In deep-sea hydrothermal vents, sulfur compounds are central for microbial bioenergetics. Despite its significant impact on the global sulfur cycle, anaerobic sulfur compound disproportionation remains the least understood metabolism, with only three bacterial strains having been investigated at the proteomic level for their sulfur disproportionation metabolism to date. Here, we present a comparative proteomics study of the chemolithoautotrophic sulfur-cycling species Dissulfuribacter thermophilus S69ᵀ. Upon thiosulfate disproportionation conditions, proteomics revealed a high abundance of a c

Light-induced carotenogenesis enhances growth and high hydrostatic pressure tolerance in a deep-sea bacterium by reducing intracellular ROS.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents emit geothermal light, yet its ecological role in shaping microbial adaptation remains largely unexplored. To investigate this, we designed a custom cultivation system that simultaneously applies high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) and light and used it to isolate 12 bacterial strains from active chimney fragments collected at the Kairei hydrothermal field. All 12 isolates exhibited enhanced growth under light exposure. Among them, strain SY138, identified as a novel Microbacterium species, was selected for mechanistic investigation. Our results demonstrate that light e

Newly discovered CO2 (carbon dioxide) vent cave drives r-strategy shift in a Mediterranean aphotoendosymbiotic coral.

Submarine CO2 volcanic vents represent peculiar environments with varying seawater chemical-physical parameters that may affect the ecological traits of calcifying organisms, such as growth and demographic characteristics. The present study focused on exploring the growth and population dynamics of a temperate, solitary and aphotoendosymbiotic coral Caryophyllia inornata (Duncan, 1878) living in a CO2 vent cave at 14 m depth. The volcanic emissions in and around the cave led high levels of pCO2, resulting in lower calcium carbonate saturation state (Ωa: 2.1-2.2) values compared to those observ

Extreme abiotics drive sediment biocomplexity along pH gradients in a shallow submarine volcanic vent.

Volcanic emissions in shallow vents influence the biogeochemistry of the sedimentary compartment, creating marked abiotic gradients. We assessed the spatial dynamics of the sediment compartment, as for the composition and origin of organic matter and associated prokaryotic community, in a volcanic shallow CO2 vent (Vulcano Island, Italy). Based on elemental (carbon, nitrogen content and their ratio) and isotopic composition (δ13C, δ15N and δ34S), the contribution of vent-derived organic matter (microbial mats) to sedimentary organic matter was high close to the vent, while the marine-derived e

Proteome-wide mapping of cysteine persulfidation in deep-sea hyperthermophilic archaea.

Protein persulfidation, a major post-translational modification mediated by the gaseous signaling molecule hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), regulates diverse physiological processes in eukaryotes and bacteria. However, its existence and functional roles in archaea, the third domain of life, remain entirely unexplored. Here, we investigate persulfidation in the deep-sea hyperthermophilic archaeon Thermococcus aciditolerans SY113, which thrives in sulfur rich hydrothermal vents and endogenously produces substantial H₂S. Our profiling not only delineated the unique reactivity landscape of this modificatio

Physiological and metabolic plasticity in Patella caerulea enables survival in the CO2 vent systems of the Castello Aragonese (Ischia Island).

Ocean acidification (OA) represents a major threat to marine ecosystems, causing detrimental effects mainly on calcifying organisms. However, the limpet Patella caerulea is one of the few calcifiers that can inhabit the naturally acidified areas of the Castello Aragonese vent systems (Ischia Island, Italy). Its presence suggests that this species may have developed tolerance or adaptive strategies to cope with OA. Nevertheless, the specific biological mechanisms remain largely unknown. To address this gap of knowledge, in our study we conducted physiological and metabolomics analyses on reside
