Interactions of cnidarian toxins with the immune system.

Cnidarians comprise four classes of toxic marine animals: Anthozoa, Cubozoa, Scyphozoa and Hydrozoa. They are the largest and probably the oldest phylum of toxic marine animals. Any contact with a cnidarian, especially the box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri), can be fatal, but most cnidarians do not possess sufficiently strong venomous apparatus to penetrate the human skin, whereas others rarely come into contact with human beings. Only a small, almost negligible percentage of the vast wealth of cnidarian toxins has been studied in detail. Many polypeptide cnidarian toxins are immunogenic, and c

Clinical Presentation and Pathological Effects of a Hydrozoan Bloom on Farmed Atlantic Salmon.

Largely unpredictable, gelatinous plankton blooms are a growing concern for the ever-expanding mariculture industry. Recently, a bloom of a colonial hydrozoan known as Apolemia sp. was detected via a citizen-science initiative, Nye.dugnadforhavet.no, in mid-Norway in July 2023. By November 2023, the bloom spanned the entire 2500 km Norwegian coast, adversely impacting the aquaculture industry nationwide. This report describes the clinical presentation and pathology on farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) caused by an unprecedented bloom of Apolemia sp. at the Austevoll station of the Institute

XY sex determination in a cnidarian.

BACKGROUND: Sex determination occurs across animal species, but most of our knowledge about its mechanisms comes from only a handful of bilaterian taxa. This limits our ability to infer the evolutionary history of sex determination within animals. RESULTS: In this study, we generated a linkage map of the genome of the colonial cnidarian Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus and used it to demonstrate that this species has an XX/XY sex determination system. We demonstrate that the X and Y chromosomes have pseudoautosomal and non-recombining regions. We then use the linkage map and a method based on th

Environmental drivers of the occurrence and abundance of the Irukandji jellyfish (Carukia barnesi).

Understanding the links between species and their environment is critical for species management. This is particularly true for organisms of medical and/or economic significance. The 'Irukandji' jellyfish (Carukia barnesi) is well known for its small size, cryptic nature, and highly venomous sting. Being the namesake of the Irukandji syndrome, contact with this marine stinger often leads to hospitalization and can be fatal. Consequently, the annual occurrence of this organism is believed to cost the Australian government an estimated $AUD3 billion annually in medical costs and losses for touri

First envenomation report of the Cnidarian Physalia physalis in Indonesia.

Despite the high number of victims every year, Physalia physalis's envenomations in Indonesia are scientifically unsounded. This annual event occurred mainly in Java's southern beaches and the Eastern Bali Islands, which are the most tourist destinations. The lack of scientific reports can lead to unaware and uneducated beachgoers resulting in a high number of victims, which in turn may ruin the economic sectors. Thus, this study aimed to report P. physalis's envenomation and its treatments in the southern beaches of the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province. It was based on the 15 beach lifeg

[Dangerous marine animals].

Sea-biological basic knowledge for divers is offered only in special lessons for advanced scuba divers. According to statistics, however, five per cent of the deadly diving accidents are caused by underwater organisms. This number could be reduced to a fraction, by correct behaviour during the dive and after an accident. The most frequent accidents with sea animals during water sports are not by unprovoked shark attacks, which cause six deaths world-wide per year on the average, but turn out with usually well camouflaged sea inhabitants, that do not attack humans, rather by their inadvertence

Delayed allergic dermatitis presenting as a keloid-like reaction caused by sting from an Indo-Pacific Portuguese man-o'-war (Physalia utriculus).

Cnidarian envenomations are common occurrences in the tropics that can affect holidaymakers. The cutaneous reactions are classified as immediate or delayed types. Delayed allergic reactions are persistently recurring dermatitis, which can occur within 1-4 weeks from the initial sting, and may last for several months. Hypertrophic scar-like or keloid-like reactions are rare, and are believed to be a type IV hypersensitivity reaction to sequestered antigens from stinging filaments. We report an unusual case of delayed allergic dermatitis with keloid-like presentation caused by Physalia utriculus

Oral inflammatory response to a sting from a Portuguese man-of-war.

A careful history was taken in an attempt to document an unusual delayed inflammatory reaction involving the ears and oral cavity. Severe oral and auricular inflammations have been described as apparent reactions to stings on the patient's foot by a Portuguese man-of-war (P physalia). Toxin was injected into the right foot and resulted in a delayed type of severe swellings and inflammation. The soft palate, cheek, periodontal tissues, and lower lip were primarily involved. Oral inflammations coincided with massive, acute, inflammatory lesions behind the ears. Delayed oral and ear inflammations

Complication of a Portuguese man-of-war envenomation to the foot: a case report.

Jellyfish stings have become more prevalent on account of larger commercial presence along coastal waterways. Stings are referred to as envenomations, due to the process of a neurotoxic venom being injected into the victim at the site of the sting. These events are usually mild, and for the most part, confined to local hypersensitivity reactions at the site of the injury. Certain species of jellyfish, however, have been associated with more severe, systemic insults including muscle cramping, respiratory distress, hypotension, circulatory collapse and death. One such example of a more potent ve

Rhabdomyolysis during envenomation by Physalia sp envenomation in New Caldonia.

We report the first case of rhabdomyolysis following envenomation by a Physalia sp in New Caledonia. Systemic envenomation by this marine hydrozoan is well known, including myalgia as a commonly reported clinical feature. Nonetheless, a related increase in muscle enzymes, featuring rhabdomyolysis, has not previously been described. In this case report, we describe a patient with rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure. Rhabdomyolysis should be checked in case of systemic physalia envenomation.

Inducing Complete Polyp Regeneration from the Aboral Physa of the Starlet Sea Anemone Nematostella vectensis.

Cnidarians, and specifically Hydra, were the first animals shown to regenerate damaged or severed structures, and indeed such studies arguably launched modern biological inquiry through the work of Trembley more than 250 years ago. Presently the study of regeneration has seen a resurgence using both "classic" regenerative organisms, such as the Hydra, planaria and Urodeles, as well as a widening spectrum of species spanning the range of metazoa, from sponges through mammals. Besides its intrinsic interest as a biological phenomenon, understanding how regeneration works in a variety of species

An underwater imagery identification guide for shallow, mesophotic and deep-sea benthos in Maldives.

BACKGROUND: During the 2022 Nekton Maldives Mission, we deployed a variety of platforms (snorkelling, remotely-operated vehicles and manned submersibles) to conduct video surveys of the biodiversity and composition of shallow (< 30 m), mesophotic (30-150 m) and deep-sea (> 150 m) benthos found in the Maldives' central and southern atolls. In total, ~ 80 hrs of stereo-video footage were collected during the benthic transect surveys, which were subsequently processed using annotation software in order to evaluate benthic biodiversity and community composition. Here, we present a photographic gui

Jellyfish anaphylaxis: A wide spectrum of sensitization routes.

Background: Recent studies demonstrated that, in the past few years, the number of jellyfish species is increasing worldwide; this increase can be explained by environmental and climatic reasons. Contacts with jellyfish can cause acute and chronic effects, including allergic reactions. Although anaphylaxis caused by jellyfish is a rare event, repetitive stings during bathing as well as marine sports and job activities represent important risk factors that can increase the probability of sensitization. Recently, it was also pointed out the possibility of anaphylaxis caused by jellyfish ingestio

Fatal Portuguese man-o'-war (Physalia physalis) envenomation.

A fatal case of Physalia physalis (Portuguese man-o'-war) envenomation occurred on the Florida Atlantic coast in 1987. Despite appropriate beachside first aid, the patient was conscious only several minutes before having primary respiratory arrest and, later, cardiovascular collapse that resulted in death. Discharged nematocysts were still visible on the injured stratum corneum five days after envenomation. Additional treatment maneuvers suggested by this case include testing the tentacle fragments found on the victim's skin before their removal to ensure that nematocyst firing has been counte

Complete Proton Transfer Cycle in GFP and Its T203V and S205V Mutants.

Proton transfer is critical in many important biochemical reactions. The unique three-step excited-state proton transfer in avGFP allows observations of protein proton transport in real-time. In this work we exploit femtosecond to microsecond transient IR spectroscopy to record, in D2 O, the complete proton transfer photocycle of avGFP, and two mutants (T203V and S205V) which modify the structure of the proton wire. Striking differences and similarities are observed among the three mutants yielding novel information on proton transfer mechanism, rates, isotope effects, H-bond strength and prot

Proteomic characterisation of toxins isolated from nematocysts of the South Atlantic jellyfish Olindias sambaquiensis.

Surprisingly little is known of the toxic arsenal of cnidarian nematocysts compared to other venomous animals. Here we investigate the toxins of nematocysts isolated from the jellyfish Olindias sambaquiensis. A total of 29 unique ms/ms events were annotated as potential toxins homologous to the toxic proteins from diverse animal phyla, including cone-snails, snakes, spiders, scorpions, wasp, bee, parasitic worm and other Cnidaria. Biological activities of these potential toxins include cytolysins, neurotoxins, phospholipases and toxic peptidases. The presence of several toxic enzymes is intrig
