Phenotypic integration of the cervical vertebrae in the Hominoidea (Primates).

Phenotypic integration and modularity represent important factors influencing evolutionary change. The mammalian cervical vertebral column is particularly interesting in regards to integration and modularity because it is highly constrained to seven elements, despite widely variable morphology. Previous research has found a common pattern of integration among quadrupedal mammals, but integration patterns also evolve in response to locomotor selective pressures like those associated with hominin bipedalism. Here, I test patterns of covariation in the cervical vertebrae of three hominoid primate

Physiological and biochemical indicators in blood of captive yellow-cheeked gibbons and northern white-cheeked gibbons.

BACKGROUND: Gibbons are recognized as a critically endangered primate taxon of significant conservation importance. Given their dwindling populations, accurate disease diagnosis, treatment, and management have become crucial for species preservation. However, the lack of established physiological and biochemical reference ranges currently poses substantial challenges to effective clinical assessment and disease identification in these primates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, blood samples were collected from the gibbons under anesthesia to ensure safe restraint during the procedure. Th

Detection of HEV-specific antibodies in four non-human primate species, including great apes, from different zoos in Germany.

The hepatitis E virus (HEV) has been described in humans and various animal species in different regions of the world. However, the knowledge on natural HEV infection in non-human primates and the corresponding risk of zoonotic transmission is scarce. To determine whether primates in captivity are affected by HEV infection, we investigated 259 individual sera of clinically healthy non-human primates of 14 species from nine German zoos. Using a commercial double-antigen-sandwich ELISA and a commercial IgG ELISA, 10 animals (3·9%) reacted positive in at least one assay. Three ape species and one

Variation of thoracolumbar vertebral morphology in anthropoid primates.

OBJECTIVES: Morphological variation among extant primates in the lumbar vertebral column is well studied. However, knowledge concerning the thoracic spine, an important region responsible for supporting and facilitating movement in the upper trunk, remains relatively scarce. Consequently, our comprehension of the functional differentiation exhibited throughout the thoracolumbar vertebral column among various primate species remains constrained. In this study, we examined patterns of morphological variation in the thoracolumbar vertebral column of extant hominoids, cercopithecoids, and Ateles.

A hydrophobic patch on proteinase 3, the target of autoantibodies in Wegener granulomatosis, mediates membrane binding via NB1 receptors.

Proteinase 3 (PR3), the target antigen of antineutrophil cytoplasm autoantibodies, which are found in patients with Wegener granulomatosis, is a neutrophil serine protease localized within cytoplasmic granules. Recently, the human neutrophil antigen NB1 was identified as a specific neutrophil cell surface receptor of PR3. We hypothesized that the unique hydrophobic cluster of PR3 that is not present on human neutrophil elastase and cathepsin G and presumably is also missing in other human PR3 homologs accounts for its binding to the NB1 receptor expressed on the cellular surface of NB1 cells.

Back to the roots of a new exon--the molecular archaeology of a SP100 splice variant.

Retropseudogenes are intronless DNA sequences sharing a high degree of homology with the cDNA of their corresponding active genes. They are thought to have originated by reverse transcription of messenger RNA and reintegration of the cDNA into the genome. Usually considered a type of evolutionary waste, they melt into the background of their surrounding DNA by the loss of similarity to the active gene or disappear from the genome by the accumulation of deletions. On the other hand, in this paper we describe the evolutionary recycling of this genomic waste. Recently, a splice variant of the gen

Molecular screening for active severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infections among non-human primates in Indonesia.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) poses an ongoing public health concern, and its zoonotic nature increases the risk of cross-species transmission between humans and animals. Non-human primates (NHPs) are particularly susceptible because of the high similarity in angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) critical residues compared to those in humans, especially among catarrhine species. Therefore, surveillance of NHP populations is essential, particularly in Indonesia, a megadiverse nation hosting numerous primate species that frequently interact with humans. In this st

Bladder calcification and obstructive uropathy in a gibbon infected with Schistosoma haematobium.

A gibbon was repeatedly exposed to Schistosoma haematobium infection and was followed for 68 months after the first exposure. Severe obstructive uropathy and calcification of the bladder and ureters were found despite the fact that mean excretion of eggs in the urine averaged 167 eggs per day and never exceeded 400 eggs per day.

Transmission of hepatitis B virus to gibbons by exposure to human saliva containing hepatitis B surface antigen.

A pool of whole-mouth saliva collected from five human carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen, subtype adr, was found to contain antigen particles with mean diameters of 23.3 and 41.8 nm as seen by immune electron microscopy. Two gibbons received subcutaneous injections of the pooled saliva and developed serological and, in at least one animal, biochemical evidence of hepatitis B virus infection at 12 and 22 weeks, respectively. Although none of eight other gibbons that were exposed by the nasal or oral routes were infected, the experiment demonstrated that human saliva can serve as a vehicle

Molecular sex determination in primates including non-invasive umbilical cord samples from neonates of three endangered species.

BACKGROUND: Molecular sex determination is a valuable tool for an effective population management in captive bred endangered species. The molecular approaches are particularly valuable in species with limited sexual dimorphism. Moreover, the utilization of accessible non-invasive samples from newborn animals enables early sex determination beneficial for the animal population management and planning. METHODS AND RESULTS: A rapid molecular sex determination method using PCR with specific primers targeting the male-specific SRY locus and the control c-myc gene present in both sexes was develope

Molecular and morphological characterization of Oxyspirura conjunctivalis (Spirurida: Thelaziidae) in a captive gibbon with evidence of cockroach intermediate hosts.

Eyeworms of the genus Oxyspirura infect a wide range of avian hosts worldwide, with more than 50 species described. However, Oxyspirura conjunctivalis (syn. O. youngi) and the recently described O. tamarina have been reported exclusively from captive primates in zoological gardens in Europe and North America. In this study, we report the first record of Oxyspirura infection in a captive Bornean white-bearded gibbon (Hylobates albibarbis) in Japan. Five adult worms recovered from the conjunctival sac measured 7.8-11.1 mm in length and 0.29-0.35 mm in width and exhibited a bipartite buccal capsu

Functional morphology of the first cervical vertebra in humans and nonhuman primates.

The cervical vertebral column bears or balances the weight of the head supported by the nuchal muscles that partly originate from the cervical vertebrae. The position of the head relative to the vertebral column, and consequently locomotion and posture behavior, could thus be associated with the form of the cervical vertebrae. In spite of this assumption and some empirical indications along these lines, primate vertebral morphologies have been reported to be very similar and not clearly related to locomotion. We therefore study the relationship between the morphology of the first cervical vert

Modularity and integration of the neural arch and vertebral centrum in primates.

The vertebral column consists of multiple homologous elements that have specialized within and between taxa and serve important functions in positional support and as protection for the central nervous system. The study of modularity and integration provides new insights into the evolution of complex structures such as the vertebral column. Patterns of modularity and integration may reflect underlying genetic-developmental patterns and facilitate evolution. Previous studies have identified mixed modularity patterns within and between elements across mammals generally, within primates and carni

Positional behavior and vertebral morphology in atelines and cebines.

Atelines are of particular interest to primate evolutionary studies because they converge with hominoids in postcranial anatomy, including the vertebral column. Currently, our understanding of ateline vertebral morphology is limited to mainly qualitative descriptions and functional interpretations based on general categories of positional behavior. Even less is known about the vertebrae of other platyrrhines. This study more closely examines vertebral form and function in atelines and cebines by combining direct field observations of axial postures and movements, assessments of spinal loading

Singing behavior and singing functions of black-crested gibbons (Nomascus concolor jingdongensis) at Mt. Wuliang, central Yunnan, China.

We used data on loud duetted and solo songs collected from one habituated polygynous group of black-crested gibbons (Nomascus concolor jingdongensis) on Mt. Wuliang, Yunnan, to test several hypotheses about the functions of these songs. The major functions proposed for loud gibbon songs include resource defense, mate defense, pairbonding, group cohesion and mate attraction. Duet bouts are generally initiated by adult males, who select the highest trees near to ridges or on steep slopes as singing trees. Such trees facilitate voice transmission and inter-group communication. Singing trees tende

Serum and urinary concentrations of sex hormones and genital swelling during the menstrual cycle of the gibbon.

The relationship between sex hormone concentrations and female genital swelling during the menstrual cycle in the monogamous gibbon was comparable with that of polygamous female primates, such as the chimpanzee, which live in multimale groups and have larger swellings. The data, therefore, support the hypothesis proposed by C. R. Carpenter more than 50 years ago, that the gibbon's genital swelling, like that of other female primates, reflects basic physiological processes associated with progress of the menstrual cycle. Genital swelling increased during the follicular phase with increasing con

Multilocus genotyping of Giardia duodenalis in captive non-human primates in Sichuan and Guizhou provinces, Southwestern China.

Giardia duodenalis is a common human and animal pathogen. It has been increasingly reported in wild and captive non-human primates (NHPs) in recent years. However, multilocus genotyping information for G. duodenalis infecting NHPs in southwestern China is limited. In the present study, the prevalence and multilocus genotypes (MLGs) of G. duodenalis in captive NHPs in southwestern China were determined. We examined 207 fecal samples from NHPs in Sichuan and Guizhou provinces, and 16 specimens were positive for G. duodenalis. The overall infection rate was 7.7%, and only assemblage B was identif
