Cephalometric assessment of the hyoid bone position in oral breathing children.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: because of its anatomical and functional relationship with the craniofacial complex, we assessed the cephalometry of the hyoid bone position in relation to the respiratory pattern of these 53 female children, with average age of 10 years; 28 of them are nasal breathers and 25 are oral breathers. Horizontal, vertical and angular cephalometric measures were used in order to determine the hyoid bone location. The Student "t" and the Pearson correlation tests were used in order to compare the groups and the variables. RESULTS: We did not see statistically significant differe

Disruption of hedgehog signaling leads to hyoid bone dysplasia during embryogenesis.

The development of the hyoid bone is a complex process that involves the coordination of multiple signaling pathways. Previous studies have demonstrated that disruption of the hedgehog pathway in mice results in a series of structural malformations. However, the specific role and critical period of the hedgehog pathway in the early development of the hyoid bone have not been thoroughly characterized. In this study, we treated pregnant ICR mice with the hedgehog pathway inhibitor vismodegib by oral gavage in order to establish a model of hyoid bone dysplasia. Our results indicate that administr

Quantitative Ultrasound Assessment of Hyoid Bone Displacement During Swallowing Following Thyroidectomy.

The aim of this study was to investigate temporal ultrasound measurements of the hyoid bone displacement during swallowing following thyroidectomy in women and to relate these measures to age, clinical outcomes, and upper digestive airway symptoms. The sample was divided into an experimental group (EG) of 20 women who underwent thyroidectomy (mean age = 49.55 years ± 15.14) and a control group (CG) of 20 healthy women volunteers (mean age = 40.75 years ± 15.92). Both groups were submitted to ultrasound assessment to obtain four temporal measurements of hyoid bone displacement during swallowing

Changes in Oral Vowel Sounds and Hyoid Bone Movement After Thyroidectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Voice and speech alterations after total thyroidectomy may be associated with other extralaryngeal factors, such as neck muscle dysfunction and neck scar contracture. We evaluated the acoustic characteristics of oral vowel sounds and changes in hyoid bone movement before and after thyroidectomy. METHODS: Twenty-nine female patients undergoing total thyroidectomy were included. Fundamental frequencies (Fo), formants and vowel space areas were evaluated before surgery and 7 days and 3 months after surgery to acoustically analyze the oral vowel sounds. Videofluoroscopic images were t

A case of external carotid artery pseudoaneurysm from hyoid bone fracture.

Carotid artery pseudoaneurysms are detected most commonly after acute traumatic injuries to the head and neck. Pseudoaneurysms of the carotid artery are rare after blunt trauma. The most common site of injury occurs in the internal carotid artery with greater than 70 per cent of those injuries resulting from motor vehicle collisions. We report a case of external carotid artery pseudoaneurysm secondary to chronic arterial trauma. The patient presented with a one-week history of left ear pain and a pulsatile left neck mass. Radiologic studies revealed a 2.8-cm neck mass compatible with a pseudoa

Hyoid bone involvement by squamous cell carcinoma: clinical and pathological features.

The incidence of hyoid bone involvement by neoplasia is undetermined, despite its importance in hyoid-preserving surgery. Eleven (1.46%) of 755 whole-organ laryngeal specimens examined demonstrated hyoid bone infiltration. These included 6 cases originating from the larynx, 3 from the vallecula, and 1 case each from the pyriform fossa and tongue base. Clinically, vallecular involvement was helpful in determining hyoid invasion; however, computed tomography (CT) was disappointing. The greater cornu was the sole site of invasion in six cases. Ten of 11 cases were secondary to direct tumor spread

Hyoid Bone Syndrome in a Patient Undergoing Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation.

The clinical case describes the presence of hyoid bone syndrome (HBS) in a patient with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation, and the resolution of painful symptoms through an osteopathic manual technique (unwinding) applied to the tongue. To the knowledge of the authors, it is the first case report involving an LVAD patient with HBS treated with an osteopathic approach. The article briefly reviews the data relating to surgical therapy for patients with a clinical history of end-stage heart failure and symptoms related to HBS and posits some hypotheses on the presence of pain r

Electrocautery only for hyoid bone removal in pediatric thyroglossal duct cyst excision.

AIM: Surgical excision of hyoid bone is the mainstay of thyroglossal duct cyst removal, to prevent recurrences. Bone excision by cut - bone forceps may prove inaccurate and somewhat dangerous. Therefore, use of alternative methods has been advocated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The proposal of the study is to cut the body of the hyoid bone with the only electric scalpel. Surgical casenotes of 57 pediatric patients operated by our Institution with modified Sistrunk technique and complete dissection of the entire body of hyoid bone and its removal at the cartilage junction with lateral horn with mono

A Novel Laryngeal Preservation Technique following Total Glossectomy with Hyoid Bone Resection.

Despite the recent progress of chemotherapy and sophisticated radiotherapy, surgery still remains the most reliable treatment for advanced tongue cancers in terms of survival. The major disadvantage of this treatment is that it should sacrifice the quality of patients' life. When the tongue cancer is so advanced as to involve the hyoid bone, which is considered a functional part of the larynx, radical operation needs to resect both the entire tongue and the larynx and the hyoid bone en bloc to prevent aspiration pneumonia. As a result of total laryngectomy, the patients will suffer significant

Atypical Pharyngeal Pouch Arising Bilaterally between the Hyoid Bone and Thyroid Cartilage.

Introduction. Pharyngoesophageal diverticuli are a common cause of dysphagia; they are associated with various morbidities and a decreased quality of life. There are several different types of the diverticuli, and they are divided based on the anatomical location of origin relative to the cricopharyngeal muscle; these include Zenker's, Killian-Jamieson's, and Laimer's diverticula. The authors present a unique case of pharyngoesophageal diverticulum that has not been previously described. Case Presentation. A 65-year-old male presented with a 12-month history of dysphagia and odynophagia for so

Traumatic hyoid bone fracture in patient wearing a helmet: a case report.

Fractures of hyoid bone are rare and most of the injuries cause by strangulation. Hyoid bone fractures are usually the result of direct trauma to the neck through manual strangulation or hanging, blunt trauma or from projectiles. But hyoid bone fracture caused by helmet strap has not been reported before. We present a young man wearing a helmet had an isolated hyoid bone fractures after a motorcycle-to-motorcycle accident. So, we should be more aware that helmet wearing riders are prone to have this kind of injury.

[Postural changes of the tongue and hyoid bone following orthognathodontic surgical interventions].

The study was carried out on 28 dysgnathic patients submitted to surgical correction of malocclusion with the use of latero-lateral X-rays pre- and postoperatively. Cephalometry included a tongue and hyoid bone profiles and changes were assessed and quantified. It was interesting to note that aspecific evaluation of progenia patients confirmed the raising of the tongue and the lowering of the hyoid bone. Evaluation of the type of operation carried out led to further considerations. In patients undergoing combined operation there was a prevalence of a raising of the two components; mandible ope

Data on hyoid bone position in class I and class III malocclusions.

In Class I and III malocclusion the position of the hyoid varies. We can able to predict the position of the hyoid when comparing its position between Class I malocclusion and Class III malocclusion. In this meta-analysis search was done using various keywords like "hyoid bone", "Class I", "Class III", "hyoid cephalometrics", "Pharyngeal airway", Pharyngeal changes", "Uvulo-glossopharyngeal" and "hyoid triangle". It was found that there was a definite correlation between the hyoid bone position in Class I and Class III malocclusion. It was found that the hyoid was more superiorly and anteriorl
