Hyperglycemia is known to negatively affect various animal species, but data on African pygmy hedgehogs remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of hyperglycemia and evaluate the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of severe hyperglycemia (≥180 mg/dL) in hedgehogs. We present a case of hemichorea/hemiballism, a rare complication of hyperglycemia. Diagnosis is made clinically by signs of unilateral involuntary movements of the extremities combined with typical neuroradiological findings in the basal ganglia. Guidelines for treatment of the condition are lacking but in many cases correction for hyperglycemia is sufficient for full symptom relief. In other cases, symptomatic treatment with haloperidol and tetrabenazine can be used.

A 15-year-old female presented to a pediatric emergency department with glycosuria, ketonuria, and hyperglycemia and was admitted with a presumed diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. The patient required no insulin therapy and only minor dietary modification to maintain euglycemia. Clinical examination and laboratory findings revealed a primary diagnosis of Graves' hyperthyroidism with associated impaired glucose tolerance. Hyperglycemia is an adverse effect that occurs with all protease inhibitors, although few cases have been reported in the literature. Most patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection receiving antiretroviral therapy are also taking at least one protease inhibitor.
