Post-traumatic spinal hematoma in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH).

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of spinal hematoma and its relation to neurological deficit after trauma in patients with spinal ankylosis from diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of 2256 urgent or emergency MRI referrals over a period of 8 years and nine months revealed 70 DISH patients who underwent CT and MRI scans of the spine. Spinal hematoma was the primary outcome. Additional variables were spinal cord impingement, spinal cord injury (SCI), trauma mechanism, fracture type, spinal canal narrowing, treatment type, and Fran

Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH) and a Possible Inflammatory Component.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH) is considered a metabolic condition, characterized by new bone formation affecting mainly at entheseal sites. Enthesitis and enthesopathies occur not only in the axial skeleton but also at some peripheral sites, and they resemble to some extent the enthesitis that is a cardinal feature in spondyloarthritis (SpA), which is an inflammatory disease. RECENT FINDINGS: We review the possible non-metabolic mechanism such as inflammation that may also be involved at some stage and help promote new bone formation in DISH. We discuss su

Swallowing Difficulty in Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis with Metabolic Syndrome.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a disease of unknown etiology developing following ossification of the antero-lateral ligaments of the spine. Mostly, prevailing elderly adult males, it is an uncommon cause of dysphagia and dysphonia. We report three cases of DISH with metabolic syndrome. They were complained of neck movement restriction and dysphagia. At first, They all visited ear, nose, and throat outpatient department. The initial impression was gastroesophageal reflux, and an endoscopy excluded esophageal lesion. Cervical spine radiologic imaging revealed ossification of

Severe acitretin-induced diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis: a case report.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), also known as Forestier-Rotes-Querol disease, is a systemic noninflammatory disease characterized by ossification of the entheses. DISH predominantly affects the spine. Although peripheral involvement is also often reported, it rarely affects patients' function. A 77-year-old man presented to our emergency department because of incapacitating pain and stiffness in the spine and hips. The patient had been diagnosed with biopsy-proven mycosis fungoides 3 years earlier and had been treated with oral acitretin at 25 to 50 mg daily since diagnosis. H

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH): Increased prevalence in Pacific Islanders.

INTRODUCTION: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a musculoskeletal disorder in which ligaments and entheses slowly become ossified, leading to decreased mobility and pain. The prevalence is variably reported as between 3% and 25% of the population over 50. In Australasia, the prevalence and severity of DISH has long been thought by radiologists to be high in certain populations, particularly among Pacific Islanders. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence and severity of DISH in a Pacific Islander community. METHODS: Chest radiographs in 459 individuals were

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis: Can we identify a peripheral pattern?

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis is a bone disease characterized by ossification of spinal ligaments and peripheral entheses. Currently, we still use the classic classification criteria that do not include extraspinal manifestations. A number of authors agree on the need to revise them. We present 3 patients in which a diagnosis of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis could not be established if we apply those criteria, but they have fully compatible clinical and radiological manifestations of hyperostotic disease.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis causing dysphagia in a young patient.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is an under-diagnosed condition producing flowing ossification of the antero-lateral ligaments of the spine. Affecting predominantly males over 65 years old, it is an unusual cause of dysphagia and dysphonia. We report a 45-year-old mole with a three years history of dysphonia and three months of dysphagia. The initial diagnosis was gastroesophageal reflux, and an endoscopy ruled out esophageal luminal pathology. Cervical spine radiographs showed ossification of the cervical anterior longitudinal ligament with large, prominent osteophytes from C3

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (Forestier-Rotes-Querol disease): what's new?

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), also known as Forestier-Rotes-Querol disease, is characterized by the ossification of the entheses (i.e., enthesopathy). The diagnosis of DISH requires at least two (according to Forestier) or three (according to Resnick) contiguous intervertebral bridges, without severe disk alterations (in contrast to degenerative spinal disease) or ankylosis of the sacroiliac or facet joints (in contrast to spondylarthritis). Although prevalence estimates vary with the number of bridges used to define the disease, the prevalence of DISH is consistently high a

[Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis: current aspects of diagnostics and therapy].

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a common but often unrecognized systemic disorder observed mainly in the middle-aged and elderly population, characterized by ankylosing formations of the spine and ossifications of peripheral ligaments, tendons and joint capsule insertion points (entheses). Despite the increase of prevalence with age, the condition often remains undiagnosed. It can be an asymptomatic incidental radiographic finding but can also manifest in several multiorgan complications, such as back and neck pain, restriction of mobility of the spine, peripheral joint affe

[Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and its relation to metabolic parameters].

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a non-inflammatory disease of skeleton characterized by hyperostosis of axial and peripheral skeleton. The association of DISH with type 2 diabetes mellitus and other metabolic alterations (e.g. impaired lipid metabolism) has been known for many years. However, it has not been explained satisfactorily yet. It seems that this pathological process is significantly influenced by hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Also, it is affected by growth hormone (GH) and its action mediated by insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and its binding proteins (IG

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis: an unusual cause of difficult intubation.

A case is reported in which anterior osteophytes on the cervical vertebra, in combination with a subglottic stenosis, resulted in distortion of the airway and led to unexpected difficulties during intubation. The osteophytes, associated with the syndrome of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) were centred at the midcervical level and resulted in anterior displacement of the larynx with an acute angulation of the trachea just below the larynx. This acute angulation, immediately above an unrecognized subglottic stenosis, rendered it impossible to pass all but the smallest endotrachea

Clinical Image: Esophageal Compression Secondary to Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a non-inflammatory disorder characterized by ossification of spinal ligaments and entheses. Although thoracic involvement is most common, cervical disease may rarely cause clinically significant esophageal compression and dysphagia. We present the case of a 73-year-old man with progressive dysphagia whose videofluoroscopic swallowing study, cervical computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated prominent anterior cervical osteophytes causing marked pharyngoesophageal compression, consistent with DISH. This case highlights th

The association between cervical diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and dysphagia.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is increasingly recognized as a structural cause of dysphagia due to anterior cervical osteophyte formation, yet its clinical risk factors, severity determinants, and laterality patterns remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the associations between cervical DISH presence, severity, and laterality with clinical, metabolic, and nutritional factors in patients presenting with dysphagia. This was a retrospective observational study including 208 dysphagia patients who underwent head and neck CT imaging between 2014 and 2023. DISH

Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis Presenting With Hoarseness-A Case Report.

Unilateral vocal cord paralysis-related voice change is a common presentation in the otorhinolaryngology clinic. The well-known etiology was recurrent laryngeal nerve injury due to surgery, traumatic event, or tumor compression, but there are still other etiologies that could interfere with the route of the recurrence laryngeal nerve and lead to unilateral paralysis of the vocal cord. In this report, we presented a rare case of unilateral vocal cord paralysis resulting in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis.

Cervical Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis: Rare Cause of Emergency Tracheostomy.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a rare and potentially life-threatening syndrome. We present the case of a patient complaining about severe dyspnoea and diagnosed with vocal cord paresis. An emergency tracheotomy was performed to restore his breathing. Diagnostic imaging revealed large mass-occupying cervical osteophytes compressing the larynx. The osteophytes were removed via an anterior cervical approach, and vital signs were normalized. However, postoperatively, a fistula was discovered between the upper part of the oesophagus and the trachea. As a result, a gastrostomy t

[A case of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) causing dysphagia].

A case of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis causing dysphasia was reported. A 62 year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of nuchal pain and dysphagia. Roentgenograms of the cervical spine demonstrated a "flowing" ossification anterior to three contiguous vertebral bodies, C 4-6. Esophagraphic examination demonstrated esophageal compression caused by the enormous ossification. Roentgenograms of the thoracic and lumbar spine revealed an anterior bony bridge and prediscal ossicles at multiple levels of the vertebral column. These radiographic features were characteristic of D
