Association between chronic kidney disease severity and retinopathy in hypertensive, diabetic, and mixed retinopathy in Nepal: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive, diabetic, and mixed retinopathies are prevalent ocular conditions that can serve as indicators of systemic diseases, particularly chronic kidney disease (CKD). The association between the severity of these retinopathies and the grading of CKD remains under-explored. This study aims to elucidate the correlation between the severity of hypertensive, diabetic, or mixed retinopathies and the stages of CKD, providing insights into the interconnected pathophysiology of these conditions. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 100 patients diagnosed w

High prevalence of hypertensive retinopathy and coronary heart disease in hypertensive patients with persistent microalbuminuria under short intensive antihypertensive therapy.

In 84 patients with insufficiently treated essential hypertension (systolic blood pressure > or = 160 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure > or = 100 mmHg) and normal renal function (creatinine clearance Mean +/- SD = 114 +/- 22 ml/min/1.73 m2) the mean urinary albumin excretion was 39 +/- 19 mg/24h in comparison to 14 +/- 13 mg/24h (p < 0.001) in 10 healthy controls. In 39 of the hypertensive patients albumin excretion was increased (> 30 mg/24h urine) in a subclinical range (microalbuminuria). After 3 days of effective antihypertensive treatment (systolic blood pressure < 150 mmHg and diasto

Stroke risk in patients with hypertensive retinopathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive retinopathy (HTRP) is a complication of hypertension and is recognised as hypertension-mediated target-organ damage. Hypertension is also the leading risk factor for stroke. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the stroke risk in patients with HTRP to determine whether HTRP is associated with stroke. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to 13 December 2025. Pooled risk ratios with 95% CIs were calculated. For the proportions of HTRP and stroke among patients with hypertension, risk differences and

Hypertensive retinopathy caused by a rare ovarian tumor: case report and photo essay.

A 38-year-old female presented for an optometric exam complaining that her "vision had occasionally gone blank while reading during the past 2 months". Although visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes, hypertensive retinopathy was present in both eyes. Blood pressure was measured to be 210/142. After inadequate response to initial treatment, her family physician referred her to an internist. Ultimately, a four pound Sertoli-Leydig ovarian tumor was found to be causing malignant hypertension. Removal of the tumor and medical treatment of the hypertension cleared the hypertensive retinopathy within

Initiating Events of Retinopathy in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats: Microvascular Rarefaction and Functional Deficits.

BACKGROUND: Target organ damage is crucial for hypertension risk stratification. However, the lack of sensitive assessment tools for early target organ damage in the presence of elevated blood pressure limits timely intervention. This study used the retina to investigate subclinical neurovascular damage and identify early imaging biomarkers. METHODS: We monitored male spontaneously hypertensive rats and Wistar-Kyoto controls weekly from 4 to 9 weeks of age. Weekly assessments included noninvasive blood pressure and multimodal fundus imaging, including optical coherence tomography, optical coh

Retinal and Choroidal Capillary Perfusion Are Reduced in Hypertensive Crisis Irrespective of Retinopathy.

PURPOSE: Hypertensive crisis causes end-organ damage through small-vessel damage as described histologically. Noninvasive optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) makes it possible to image retinal and choroidal capillaries on a microscopic level in vivo. We quantified eye vessel perfusion changes in hypertensive crisis using OCTA. METHODS: Patients with hypertensive crisis (systolic blood pressure ≥180 mm Hg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥110 mm Hg) and age-matched healthy controls were included in the study. OCTA en face 3 × 3-mm images of the superficial and deep retinal layers an

Hypertension and Neuroimaging Changes After Bevacizumab for Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Bevacizumab is a human monoclonal immunoglobulin G1 antibody to vascular endothelial growth factor indicated in several adult diseases. Emerging literature and expert opinion support the off-label use of intravitreal bevacizumab in the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a common disease process seen in premature neonates. One of the most common side effects of systemic therapy in adults is hypertension; however, this has not been well described in infants receiving bevacizumab for ROP. In this report, we review a case of a former 25-week premature infant treated for stage 3 ROP wit

Effects of intravitreous sodium hydrosulfide on intraocular pressure and retinopathy in ocular hypertensive rats.

We investigated the possible neuroprotectant and intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering effects of intravitreous injection of sodium hydrosulfide (NaSH) in a rodent model of experimental glaucoma. Glaucoma currently is treated by controlling IOP using medications and/or surgery. These methods are not entirely adequate for all patients. We divided 24 rats into three groups. For the control group, the right eye was treated with intravitreous saline. For the glaucoma group, ocular hypertension was induced by photocoagulating three episcleral veins and the limbal plexus of the right eye using an argo

Hypertension and Ischemic Stroke After Aflibercept for Retinopathy of Prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Retinopathy of prematurity is the leading cause of preterm infants' blindness. The preferred method for the management of aggressive posterior ROP is the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF). However, systemic and ocular adverse effects of anti-VEGF drugs remain a concern. CASE PRESENTATION: A case report of a preterm infant with a history of hypertension underwent intravitreal injection of aflibercept at the 50-week postmenstrual age because of aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in both eyes. Seven days after the intravitreal administration of af

Preeclampsia as predisposing factor for hypertensive retinopathy: Participation by the RAAS and angiogenic factors.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a hypertensive complication of pregnancy. Its cause is still unknown and it could be a risk factor for future ophthalmic problems. Retinal vascular bed alterations have been described as a consequence of PE, suggesting a retinopathy. Factors related to angiogenesis and vascular permeability, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and pigment epithelium derived factor (PEDF) or components of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS), prorrenin/renin receptor ((P)RR) and angiotensin II type I receptor (AT1R) have been located in the retina, participating in

Impact of Arterial Hypertension on the Eye: A Review of the Pathogenesis, Diagnostic Methods, and Treatment of Hypertensive Retinopathy.

The number of patients with arterial hypertension is continually increasing. Hypertension can cause organ complications, called hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD). One example is hypertensive retinopathy, in which high blood pressure (BP) damages both the retinal microcirculation and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). This can result in progressive and painless vision deterioration in some groups of patients. Unlike anywhere else in the human body, the microvasculature of the retina can be observed in vivo, and the progression of changes can be closely monitored. The harmful effect o

In-depth analysis of retinal RNA transcriptome sequencing in a rat model of hypertensive retinopathy.

OBJECTIVES: Hypertensive retinopathy is a microvascular complication caused by systemic hypertension and can lead to severe visual impairment. At present, the molecular mechanisms of this disease remain incompletely understood, particularly the global expression profiles and regulatory networks of non-coding RNA (ncRNA). This study aims to comprehensively analyze the genome-wide differential expression profiles of messenger RNA (mRNA), microRNA (miRNA), long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), and circular RNA (circRNA) in retinal tissues from a spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) model of hypertensive
