A study of Graves' disease in Iceland.

The incidence of Graves' disease and its response to treatment have been studied in Iceland, where the main environmental factor possibly affecting Graves' disease is a high iodine intake. The incidence was found to be similar or lower to that reported for Europe. The response to treatment with drugs and radioiodine does not differ from that found in other countries but recurrent hyperthyroidism after subtotal thyroidectomy is more common in Iceland.

[Pulmonary sequestration in Iceland - two case reports].

Pulmonary sequestration (PS) is a rare disease where non-functioning lung tissue is separated from the normal bronchopulmonary tree and vasularized by an aberrant systemic artery. The origin of PS is not fully understood. Here we describe two unique cases of PS that support the hypothesis that PS is a congenital malformation rather than an acquired one. These are also the first Icelandic cases of PS reported.

[Bacteraemia in children in Iceland 1994-2005].

OBJECTIVE: Positive blood cultures from children suggest serious bloodstream infections. Quick medical response with targeted therapy is important, taking the child's age and medical history into account. Antibiotic therapy and vaccination programs must be based on accurate knowledge of the prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility of the bacteria. The aim of this study was to investigate epidemiological parameters associated with positive blood cultures in children in Iceland from September 20th 1994 to March 16th 2005. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All positive bacterial blood cultures from childre

Prevalence study of primary dystonia in Iceland.

In Iceland, the crude prevalence for all types of primary dystonia was 37.1/10(5) (confidence interval, 30.4-44.9). Focal dystonia had the highest prevalence (31.2/10(5)), followed by segmental (3.1/10(5)), multifocal (2.4/10(5)) and generalized dystonia (0.3/10(5)). Cervical dystonia was the most common focal dystonia (11.5/10(5)), followed by limb dystonia (8.0/10(5)), laryngeal dystonia (5.9/10(5)), blepharospasm (3.1/10(5)), and oromandibular dystonia (2.8/10(5)). The male:female ratio for all patients was 1:1.9 (P=0.0007), and females outnumbered males in all subtypes except oromandibular

[Human listeriosis diagnosed in Iceland 1978-1994.].

Listeriosis has been recognised in Iceland, as a distinct disease entity in sheep called silage disease (votheysveiki), since 1910. The use of silage was introduced in Iceland in the latter part of the 19th century. Because of the climatic conditions it came into widespread use and the connection between silage and listeriosis was first demonstrated in Iceland by Pálsson et al. The first case of human listeriosis was diagnosed in 1961. The diease was not diagnosed again untill 1978 when four cases were identified. In the period between 1978 and 1994 L. monocytogenes was isolated from 36 patien

[Acanthamoeba keratitis in Iceland from 1996-2021].

INTRODUCTION: Acanthamoeba keratitis is a rare but serious eye infection primarily associated with contact lens use. Its diagnosis is often delayed due to treatment challenges, frequent co-infections, and the amoeba's high resistance, leading to significant visual impairment. This study assessed the incidence of Acanthamoeba keratitis in Iceland over 25 years, identified risk factors, diagnostic difficulties, and explored potential improvements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study including all individuals diagnosed with amoebic corneal infection in Iceland from 1996-2021

[Primary sclerosing cholangitis in Iceland 1992-2012].

BACKGROUND: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic disease affecting the intra- and/or extrahepatic biliary tree with inflammation and progressive stricture formation that can lead to cirrhosis, end stage liver failure and liver transplantation. Known risk factors include inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), mainly ulcerative colitis (UC). Highest reported incidence in an adult population is 1.2-1.3/100.000 in Norway and Sweden, where 60-76% have IBD. The aim of this study was to investigate epidemiology of PSC in Iceland in the years 1992 to 2012 and the patients outcomes

Antibiotic susceptibility of Helicobacter pylori in Iceland.

BACKGROUND: Increasing resistance of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) to antibiotics calls for constant re-evaluation of multidrug regimens that have been used to eradicate the infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current antibiotic susceptibility of H. pylori in an Icelandic cohort. METHODS: Patients referred for gastroscopy were recruited prospectively. Those found to have a positive rapid urease test were included in the study. Susceptibility testing was conducted by the Epsilometer test (E-test) method for ampicillin, clarithromycin, levofloxacin, metronidazole and tetracyc

Plague and landscape resilience in premodern Iceland.

In debates on societal collapse, Iceland occupies a position of precarious survival, defined by not becoming extinct, like Norse Greenland, but having endured, sometimes by the narrowest of margins. Classic decline narratives for late medieval to early modern Iceland stress compounding adversities, where climate, trade, political domination, unsustainable practices, and environmental degradation conspire with epidemics and volcanism to depress the Icelanders and turn the once-proud Vikings and Saga writers into one of Europe's poorest nations. A mainstay of this narrative is the impact of inci

[Congenital heart defects in Iceland 1990-1999.].

OBJECTIVE: About 1% of live born children have congenital heart defects (CHD). Knowledge of the true incidence of CHD is important because of the risk of bacterial endocarditis in patients with heart defects. This knowledge could also serve as a basis for research on the etiology of CHD. The aim of our study was to investigate the incidence of CHD in children born in Iceland during a ten year period, from 1990 to 1999. A similar study on CHD was carried out in Iceland for children born 1985-1989. The incidence of CHD in the present study was compared to the previous and to similar studies from
