Illness perceptions matter: understanding quality of life and advanced illness behaviors in female patients with late-stage cancer.

BACKGROUND: Patients with late-stage cancer are living longer, making it important to understand factors that contribute to maintaining quality of life (QOL) and completing advanced illness behaviors (eg, advance directives). OBJECTIVE: To examine whether illness perceptions-the cognitive beliefs that patients form about their cancer-may be more important guides to adjustment than clinical characteristics of the cancer. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 105 female patients diagnosed with stage III (n = 66) or IV (n = 39) breast (n = 44), gynecological (n = 38), or lung (n = 23) cancer com

Clinical-Psychological Aspects Involved in Gynecological Surgery: Description of Peri-Operative Psychopathological Symptoms and Illness Behavior.

BACKGROUND: Within the current literature concerning the gynecological surgery, there are only a few studies that focus on the psychological aspects that characterize the peri-operative period. In this research, the psychopathological symptoms and the illness behavior were assessed in order to confirm previous results about clinical variables such as the type and method of intervention, as well as psychological aspects regarding the positive anamnesis for mental disorders. Moreover, other factors including the desire for maternity and previous surgical interventions and pregnancies were also i

Predictors of high and low levels of HIV risk behavior among adults with chronic mental illness.

OBJECTIVE: Several recent studies confirm elevated rates of human immunodeficiency virus infection among acute and chronic mentally ill adults in large urban areas. This research sought to characterize risk for HIV infection among adults with chronic mental illness and to examine psychosocial factors predictive of risk. METHODS: Two hundred and twenty-five adults with chronic mental illness who were sexually active in the past year outside of exclusive relationships were individually interviewed in community mental health clinics using a structured HIV risk assessment protocol. RESULTS: More

Candidate risk factors for temporomandibular pain and dysfunction syndrome: psychosocial, health behavior, physical illness and injury.

The purpose of this paper is to identify potential risk factors for the temporomandibular pain and dysfunction syndrome (TMPDS). The investigation focuses on the relations of TMPDS to personal, social and recent experiential factors, especially health behaviors and physical illnesses and injuries, that contribute to life stress. The data come from a retrospective case-control study of 151 TMPDS patients and 139 healthy controls. Results show that cases and controls are similar on most measures of personality characteristics although cases are somewhat more external in locus of control expectan

Knowledge about risk factors for cancer and cancer risk behavior among patients with severe mental illness.

OBJECTIVE: To examine knowledge about, perception of and current risk factors for cancer, among patients with severe mental illness (SMI) and to compare these variables with patients without SMI. METHODS: A series of patients affected by SMI (i.e., schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar disorders and severe personality disorders) and a matched (gender, age) control group of primary care attenders were assessed, by using an ad hoc semi-structured interview and a short true/false 17-item questionnaire, about family history of cancer, cancer risk-related lifestyles, personal perception and kn

Influence of psychiatric diagnoses and symptoms on HIV risk behavior in adults with serious mental illness.

HIV seroprevalence among people with serious mental illness has increased substantially in recent years. Although the prevalence of HIV behavioral risk factors has been well documented, few researchers have chosen to investigate the impact that psychopathology may have on HIV risk behavior. A review of the literature on psychiatric diagnoses related to HIV sexual risk reveals that bipolar disorder and perhaps schizophrenia are related to increased HIV risk. Further, persons in whom both Axis I and Axis II disorders are diagnosed appear to be at greater HIV behavioral risk. Research on psychiat

The effect of patient characteristics on illness perception and sun protection behaviors in melasma.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Melasma, a significant cosmetic problem, has been accepted by some authors as a photoaging illness in recent times. There is no published study evaluating the effects of the clinical and sociodemographic findings on illness perception and sun protection behaviors (SPBs) in patients with melasma. PATIENTS/METHODS: Sociodemographic data, personal characteristics, and clinical features of 150 patients with melasma were recorded in this cross-sectional study. They were analyzed for their SPBs in three groups as "never," "rarely/sometimes," and "often/always." Patients completed th

Coping with Medically Unexplained Physical Symptoms: the Role of Illness Beliefs and Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Medically unexplained syndromes (MUS) are both prevalent and disabling. While illness beliefs and behaviors are thought to maintain MUS-related disability, little is known about which specific behavioral responses to MUS are related to disability or the way in which beliefs and behaviors interact to impact functioning. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between illness beliefs and disability among patients with MUS, and assess the extent to which behaviors mediate this relationship. METHODS: The study examined data from the baseline assessment of a mu

Delirium and Self-Reported Driving Behaviors and Outcomes After Critical Illness.

IMPORTANCE: Survivors of critical illness often have ongoing issues that affect functioning, including driving ability. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether intensive care unit (ICU) delirium is independently associated with long-term changes in driving behaviors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multicenter, longitudinal cohort study included 151 survivors of critical illness residing within 200 miles of Nashville, Tennessee. Survivors were surveyed 2 to 6 years after critical illness to assess the association between delirium duration and driving skills and behaviors (July 1, 2012, to Apri

Brain-Based Predictions of Psychiatric Illness-Linked Behaviors Across the Sexes.

BACKGROUND: Individual differences in functional brain connectivity can be used to predict both the presence of psychiatric illness and variability in associated behaviors. However, despite evidence for sex differences in functional network connectivity and in the prevalence, presentation, and trajectory of psychiatric illnesses, the extent to which disorder-relevant aspects of network connectivity are shared or unique across the sexes remains to be determined. METHODS: In this work, we used predictive modeling approaches to evaluate whether shared or unique functional connectivity correlates

Risk behaviors and self-reported illnesses among Pacific Northwest surfers.

Although surfers have high incidental exposure to marine waters, no studies have investigated if surfer risk behaviors (such as surfing during advisories, near an outfall, during a rain event, or use of personal protective equipment) increase or decrease the risk of acquiring waterborne illnesses. We used a web-based survey to assess the association between risk-based behaviors and self-reported illnesses among Pacific Northwest surfers. Commonly reported illnesses include: ear infection or discharge (38%), sore throat or a cough (28%), diarrhea (16%), fever (10.5%), and vomiting (7%). Surfing

Dissimilarities of illness perception among breast cancer patients and spouses: a longitudinal exploration of relations to dyads' illness management behaviors.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer patients and their spouses often encounter emotional and physical challenges after surgery that shape how they perceive and manage the illness. Guided by the Self-Regulation Model, this study examined whether discrepancies in illness perceptions between partners predict their respective illness management behaviors three months after surgery. METHODS: The descriptive longitudinal study was conducted with 295 breast cancer patient-spouse dyads recruited by convenience sampling between August 2021 and April 2023. Illness perceptions were assessed during hospitalization by

Back to basics: A methodological perspective on marble-burying behavior as a screening test for psychiatric illness.

Animal models of human psychiatric illness are valuable frameworks to investigate the etiology and neurobiology underlying the human conditions. Accurate behavioral measures that can be used to characterize animal behavior, thereby contributing to a model's validity, are crucial. One such measure, i.e. the rodent marble-burying test (MBT), is often applied as a measure of anxiety- and compulsive-like behaviors. However, the test is characterized by noteworthy between-laboratory methodological differences and demonstrates positive treatment responses to an array of pharmacotherapies that are of

Pandemic-related health behavior: repeat episodes of influenza-like illness related to the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.

The Houston Health Department (HHD) in Texas tracks influenza-like illness (ILI) in the community through its Influenza Sentinel Surveillance Program, which began in 2008. After the influenza A(H1N1) pandemic (pH1N1) in 2009, investigators sought to assess the feasibility of this program as a non-traditional data source for tracking and monitoring care-seeking activities. Through the process of characterizing and describing patients who had 'return visits', or who were considered the heaviest ILI-related care-utilizers, the investigators sought to understand the strengths and limitations of th

Sexual behavior, body image, and partnership in chronic illness: a comparison of Huntington's disease and multiple sclerosis.

Huntington's disease (HD) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are both chronic progressive illnesses posing a serious challenge to affected patients and families. Sexual dysfunction in HD as well as in MS is a very common problem, although it is unclear whether the dysfunction is caused by the chronic illness itself or by the sociopsychiatric burden related to the illness. Twenty-nine patients with HD and 27 patients with MS each participated in a semistructured interview and several standardized questionnaires concerning partnership, sexual function, and body image. The results display significant di

Reliability of self-reports about sexual risk behavior for HIV among homeless men with severe mental illness.

The reliability of self-reports of sexual behaviors related to HIV transmission was examined in a study of homeless men with severe mental illness. Thirty-nine patients of a New York City shelter psychiatric program were interviewed about their sexual behaviors in the past six months. The same interview was administered twice, with a one- to two-week interval between interviews. Test-retest reliability was assessed using kappa and intraclass correlation coefficients. Reliability estimates ranged from.49 to.93 for overall sexual activity, number of partners, and specific behaviors other than re

Illness behavior and personality changes in patients with chronic prostatitis during a two-year follow-up period.

Illness behavior and personality changes during a 2-year follow-up period were studied in 40 patients with chronic prostatitis. In the first study, the existence of psychic problems among the subjects was high. Sexual problems were striking. During the follow-up period the personality of the patients did not change, but subjective well-being, both psychosocial and somatic, was impaired. Sexual problems and homosexual behavior also increased. In addition, the cooperation of the patients markedly decreased and their illness behavior became problematic. The results indicate a strong need for psyc
