Microscopic image enhancement for accurate sickle cell disease identification using intuitionistic fuzzy driven retinex.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a debilitating genetic blood disorder that must be identified and diagnosed early for effective treatment planning. Several factors hinder early identification in microscopic images, including uneven blood smears, lack of focus during capture, inconsistent illumination, and improper microscope settings. This paper addresses the aforementioned factors using the Intuitionistic Fuzzy-Driven Retinex (IFDR) method. The work contains two phases: microscopic image enhancement using IFDR and classification using DenseNet121. IFDR is a hybrid model that combines the Intuiti

Image enhancement network based on fiber topology-preserving multi-module fusion for neuron reconstruction.

The rapid development of optical labeling and imaging technologies has enabled scientists to capture three-dimensional images of mammalian brains at the single-neuron level. However, it has also brought about numerous technical challenges. In neuronal images, fibers exhibit lower fluorescence intensity than cell bodies and are densely packed, making it difficult to distinguish fiber signals from background noise or resolve connectivity accurately. While sparse high-brightness labeling and sensitive imaging technologies have partially addressed these issues, they have not been fundamentally res

Enhancing diagnostic information in abdominal computed tomography (CT) images through optimized image enhancement techniques.

In medical imaging, particularly in enhancing computed tomography (CT) scan images, improving image quality while preserving diagnostic content is critical for detecting different types of abnormalities, especially in cases such as tumors, inflammatory conditions, or vascular issues. This paper proposes a novel image enhancement pipeline that integrates several image enhancement techniques into a sequential workflow that is specifically designed for abdominal CT scan images. The proposed pipeline combines windowing, contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization, denoising via non-local mean

A Degraded Finger Vein Image Recovery and Enhancement Algorithm Based on Atmospheric Scattering Theory.

With the development of biometric identification technology, finger vein identification has received more and more widespread attention for its security, efficiency, and stability. However, because of the performance of the current standard finger vein image acquisition device and the complex internal organization of the finger, the acquired images are often heavily degraded and have lost their texture characteristics. This makes the topology of the finger veins inconspicuous or even difficult to distinguish, greatly affecting the identification accuracy. Therefore, this paper proposes a finge

COVID-19 Chest CT Image Segmentation Network by Multi-Scale Fusion and Enhancement Operations.

A novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was detected and has spread rapidly across various countries around the world since the end of the year 2019. Computed Tomography (CT) images have been used as a crucial alternative to the time-consuming RT-PCR test. However, pure manual segmentation of CT images faces a serious challenge with the increase of suspected cases, resulting in urgent requirements for accurate and automatic segmentation of COVID-19 infections. Unfortunately, since the imaging characteristics of the COVID-19 infection are diverse and similar to the backgrounds, existing med

Low-light image enhancement of high-speed endoscopic videos using a convolutional neural network.

Laryngeal endoscopy is one of the primary diagnostic tools for laryngeal disorders. The main techniques are videostroboscopy and lately high-speed video endoscopy. Unfortunately, due to the restricting anatomy of the larynx and technical limitations of the recording equipment, many videos suffer from insufficient illumination, which complicates clinical examination and analysis. This work presents an approach to enhance low-light images from high-speed video endoscopy using a convolutional neural network. We introduce a new technique to generate realistically darkened training samples using Pe

Lower limb edema detection and grading classification using deep learning and image enhancement technologies.

BACKGROUND: Lower limb edema is a common clinical symptom closely associated with chronic diseases such as heart failure, liver disease, and renal dysfunction. Edema severity grading is an important indicator for clinical diagnosis and disease monitoring. However, traditional assessments that rely on visual inspection and manual palpation are subjective and inconsistent, making them insufficient to meet the requirements of standardized and precise diagnostics. METHODS: This study proposes a multistage deep learning framework that integrates object detection and image classification for automa

A novel cervical image recognition framework based on feature cognitive enhancement for improved performance.

Cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most prevalent cancer among women worldwide. Early diagnosis facilitates timely intervention and treatment. Traditional colposcopy is a widely employed technique for evaluating cervical lesions. Nevertheless, the growing number of patients with cervical cancer, and the rising workload of doctors may lead to misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis. Therefore, many researchers use deep learning to make paramedical diagnoses of cervical disease. However, the current neural network models for cervical image recognition lead to poor diagnostic results due to limitations

Characteristics of dynamic magnetic resonance image enhancement in prolactinomas resistant to dopamine agonist therapy.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) enhancement parameters could predict dopamine agonist (DA) resistance in prolactinomas. METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients with prolactinomas who were treated with DA and underwent dMRI from 2001 through 2012 at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN). Intensities of the adenoma and pituitary gland were measured by drawing regions of interest on the images. Enhancement ratio, enhancement peak, prepeak slope (PPS), and enhancement time were compared between DA-resistant and DA-responsive

A method for determination of optimal image enhancement for the detection of mammographic abnormalities.

We present a paradigm for empirical evaluation of digital image enhancement algorithms for mammography that uses psychophysical methods for implementation and analysis of a clinically relevant detection task. In the experiment, the observer is asked to detect and assign to a quadrant, or indicate the absence of, a simulated mammographic structure characteristic of cancer embedded in a background image of normal breast tissue. Responses are indicated interactively on a computer workstation. The parameter values for the enhancement applied to the composite image may be varied on each trial, and

SFENet: A Spatial-Frequency Dual-Branch Image Quality Enhancement Network for Breast Ultrasound Tumor Segmentation.

Breast ultrasound (BUS) images are commonly degraded by speckle noise, intensity inhomogeneity, acoustic shadowing, and low contrast, while breast tumors often exhibit irregular morphology, heterogeneous echogenicity, and blurred boundaries. These factors make accurate lesion segmentation difficult. We propose SFENet, an end-to-end spatial-frequency dual-branch image quality enhancement network for BUS tumor segmentation. Built on a U-shaped segmentation framework, SFENet jointly models lesion morphology, global spectral responses, and local image-quality degradation through a wavelet-frequenc

Classification and Segmentation of Medical Images Using Cross-Representation Attention Fusion and Fuzzy Image Enhancement.

This paper proposes a Cross-Representation Attention-Based Neural Network with fuzzy image enhancement for joint classification and segmentation of chest X-ray and kidney images. First, each input image is transformed into three complementary representations using histogram spread, fuzzy entropy, and fuzzy standard deviation-based enhancement. These representations emphasize different intensity distributions, informative regions, and local structural variations. A Cross-Representation Attention Fusion module then models multidirectional relationships among the enhanced representations and adap

A two-stage multi-scale attention-based network for weakly supervised cataract fundus image enhancement.

Cataract is a major cause of vision loss and hinders further diagnosis. However, enhancing cataract fundus images remains challenging due to limited paired cataract retinal images and the difficulty of recovering fine details in the retinal images. To mitigate these challenges, we in this paper propose a two-stage multi-scale attention-based network (TSMSA-Net) for weakly supervised cataract fundus image enhancement. In Stage 1, we introduce a real-like cataract fundus image synthesis module, which utilizes domain transformation via CycleGAN to generate realistic paired cataract images from un
