Clinical findings and survival in cats naturally infected with feline immunodeficiency virus.

BACKGROUND: The clinical course and outcome of natural feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection are variable and incompletely understood. Assigning clinical relevance to FIV infection in individual cats represents a considerable clinical challenge. OBJECTIVE: To compare signalment, hematologic and biochemical data, major clinical problem, and survival among client-owned, FIV-infected, and uninfected domestic cats. ANIMALS: Client-owned, domestic cats tested for FIV (n = 520). METHODS: Retrospective, case control study. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify risk factor

Pathological manifestations of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection in wild African lions.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) causes AIDS in the domestic cat (Felis catus) but has not been explicitly associated with AIDS pathology in any of the eight free-ranging species of Felidae that are endemic with circulating FIV strains. African lion (Panthera leo) populations are infected with lion-specific FIV strains (FIVple), yet there remains uncertainty about the degree to which FIV infection impacts their health. Reported CD4+ T-lymphocyte depletion in FIVple-infected lions and anecdotal reports of lion morbidity associated with FIV seroprevalence emphasize the concern as to whether F

Molecular epidemiology of feline immunodeficiency virus in the domestic cat (Felis catus).

Studying the evolutionary mechanisms of feline immunodeficiency virus in the domestic cat (Felis catus), FIV(Fca), provides a good comparison to other lentiviruses, such as HIV and FIV(Pco) in the cougar (Puma concolor). We review the current epidemiological and evolutionary findings of FIV(Fca). In addition to the five accepted FIV(Fca), subtypes, several recent phylogenetic studies have found strains that form separate clades, indicative of novel subtypes. In New Zealand cats, these strains of unknown subtype have been found to be involved in complex patterns of intergenic recombination, and

Feline immunodeficiency virus vectors. Gene transfer to mouse retina following intravitreal injection.

BACKGROUND: Transduction of the murine retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) with adenovirus vectors requires technically difficult and invasive subretinal injections. This study tested the hypothesis that recombinant vectors based on feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) could access the retina following intravitreal injection. METHODS: FIV vectors expressing E. coli beta-galactosidase (FIVbetagal) were injected alone, or in combination with adenovirus vectors expressing eGFP, into the vitreous of normal mice and eyes evaluated for transgene expression. In further studies, the utility of FIV-medi

The effects of Avemar treatment on feline immunodeficiency virus infected cell cultures.

INTRODUCTION: In addition to standard highly active antiretroviral therapy protocols, complementary therapies using natural compounds are widely used by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected human patients. One such compound is the fermented wheat germ extract (FWGE), named Avemar. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we investigate the effects of Avemar in a feline-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome model. MBM lymphoid cells were acutely infected by the American feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)-Petaluma (FIV-Pet) and the European FIV Pisa-M2 strains. FL-4 lymphoid cells, continuous

Effects of multiple acute morphine exposures on feline immunodeficiency virus disease progression.

Drug abuse is a common method of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 transmission, but the role of opiates on lentivirus disease progression is not well understood. The feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)/cat system was used to model the weekend opiate abuser: the nondependent, nonaddicted, and nontolerant person. Sixteen cats were placed into 4 groups: FIV only, morphine only, morphine/FIV, and controls. Multiple acute morphine exposure did not increase the severity of early lentivirus infection. On the contrary, it delayed or moderated the FIV-induced disease progression. Although the animal

[Findings in the eyes of serologically FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) positive cats].

The findings in the eyes of 19 serologically FIV-positive cats in the terminal stage of the disease were compared to those in 23 serologically FIV-negative cats. An inflammation of iris and ciliary body was more common in the FIV-group than in the other cats and could be seen in 16 out of 19 serologically FIV-positive cats. In most cases a diffuse infiltration of both lymphocytes and plasma cells could be observed. There were only few signs of acute inflammation in the posterior segment. Degenerative alterations of the retina were found in all groups. The most common degenerative finding was a

Immunologic abnormalities in pathogen-free cats experimentally infected with feline immunodeficiency virus.

Blood mononuclear cells from 47 cats experimentally infected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) were examined by using monoclonal antibodies directed against feline CD4 and CD8 homologs, a pan-T-cell antigen, and cell surface immunoglobulin. Significant inversion of the CD4+/CD8+ T-cell ratio was observed only in cats that were infected for 18 months or more. This inversion was associated with a decrease in the absolute numbers of CD4+ T cells and a concomitant increase in CD8+ cells. However, the total numbers of circulating T and B cells were not significantly reduced. Cats infected wi

Clinical efficacy of melittin in the treatment of cats infected with the feline immunodeficiency virus.

OBJECTIVE: The bee venom melittin shows an antiviral efficacy against the human immunodeficiency virus in cell culture. It was shown to be non-toxic for cats. Aim of this pilot study was to investigate the clinical efficacy and side-effects of melittin in cats naturally infected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was performed as a prospective, placebo-controlled double-blinded trial. Twenty cats were included, of which 10 cats each were treated with either melittin (500 µg/kg body weight) or phosphate-buffered saline (placebo) subcutaneously twice per w

The protective rate of the feline immunodeficiency virus vaccine: An Australian field study.

A case-control field study was undertaken to determine the level of protection conferred to client-owned cats in Australia against feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) using a commercial vaccine. 440 cats with outdoor access from five Australian states/territories underwent testing, comprising 139 potential cases (complete course of primary FIV vaccinations and annual boosters for three or more years), and 301 potential controls (age, sex and postcode matched FIV-unvaccinated cats). FIV status was determined using a combination of antibody testing (using point-of-care test kits) and nucleic aci

Effect of feline immunodeficiency virus on cytokine response to Listeria monocytogenes in vivo.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus that induces an acquired immunodeficiency in domestic cats. The objective of this study was to compare the immune response of chronically FIV-infected cats and specific pathogen free (SPF) cats to Listeria monocytogenes, a facultative intracellular bacterium. Regional lymph nodes were removed at various times after subcutaneous inoculation with L. monocytogenes and evaluated. Lymph nodes of chronically FIV-infected cats enlarged more slowly and to a lesser degree than SPF cats. This was due to delayed and blunted lymphoid follicle formation a

Seroprevalence and genetic diversity of feline immunodeficiency virus in outdoor cats in France.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a retrovirus that causes lifelong infections in cats and may lead to immune dysfunction. Despite its importance for feline health, there is limited FIV data from France. This study investigated samples collected from stray and owned cats with outdoor access across France between December 2023 and January 2025 to estimate FIV seroprevalence, identify seropositivity predictors and analyse the genetic diversity of circulating strains. Serological screening was performed using a commercial ELISA. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was conducted on ELISA-positive

Immunopathologic Effects of Prednisolone and Cyclosporine A on Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Replication and Persistence.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) induces opportunistic disease in chronically infected cats, and both prednisolone and cyclosporine A (CsA) are clinically used to treat complications such as lymphoma and stomatitis. However, the impact of these compounds on FIV infection are still unknown and understanding immunomodulatory effects on FIV replication and persistence is critical to guide safe and effective therapies. To determine the immunologic and virologic effects of prednisolone and CsA during FIV infection, FIV-positive cats were administered immunosuppressive doses of prednisolone (2 mg

The oral and conjunctival microbiotas in cats with and without feline immunodeficiency virus infection.

The oral and conjunctival microbiotas likely play important roles in protection from opportunistic infections, while also being the source of potential pathogens. Yet, there has been limited investigation in cats, and the impact of comorbidities such as feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection has not been reported. Oral and conjunctival swabs were collected from cats with FIV infection and FIV-uninfected controls, and subjected to 16S rRNA gene (V4) PCR and next generation sequencing. 9,249 OTUs were identified from conjunctival swabs, yet the most common 20 (0.22%) OTUs accounted for 76

The effect of age on the course of experimental feline immunodeficiency virus infection in cats.

Neonatal, young adult, and aged specific pathogen-free cats were experimentally infected with cat-passaged Petaluma strain of feline immunodeficiency virus. The primary stage of illness occurred 6-8 weeks following infection in cats of all ages, but it differed in severity and clinical signs. Generalized lymphadenopathy persisted for the entire 42-week study period in neonatally infected cats, was transient in young adults, but inapparent in aged cats. Only two aged cats became chronically and severely ill during the study. One aged cat died with severe necrotizing transmural enteritis, while

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and concurrent Bartonella spp., feline immunodeficiency virus, and feline leukemia virus infections in cats from Grenada, West Indies.

Toxoplasma gondii and Bartonella spp. are zoonotic pathogens of cats. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLv) are related to human immunodeficiency virus, and human leukemia virus, respectively; all of these viruses are immunosuppressive. In the present study, the prevalence of antibodies to T. gondi, Bartonella spp., FIV, as well as FeLv antigen were determined in sera from 75 domestic and 101 feral cats (Felis catus) from the Caribbean island of Grenada, West Indies. Using a modified agglutination test, antibodies to T. gondii were found in 23 (30.6%) of the 75 p

An experimental study of primary feline immunodeficiency virus infection in cats and a historical comparison to acute simian and human immunodeficiency virus diseases.

Sixteen adolescent specific pathogen free cats were inoculated with the Petaluma strain of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and two cats were then necropsied at each of 5, 10, 21, 28, 42, 56, 70, and 84 day time points following infection. Lymphadenopathy gradually increased starting at Day 10 and persisted for the duration. Gross clinical signs of fever, mild to severe malaise, anorexia, diarrhea, dehydration, and generalized soreness appeared around Day 42, peaked at Day 56, and disappeared by Days 70-84 post-infection. Leukopenia, associated initially with a mild lymphopenia and later by

Characterization of a highly pathogenic molecular clone of feline immunodeficiency virus clade C.

We have derived and characterized a highly pathogenic molecular isolate of feline immunodeficiency virus subtype C (FIV-C) CABCpady00C. Clone FIV-C36 was obtained by lambda cloning from cats that developed severe immunodeficiency disease when infected with CABCpady00C (Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada). Clone FIV-C36 Env is 96% identical to the noninfectious FIV-C isolate sequence deposited in GenBank (FIV-Cgb; GenBank accession number AF474246) (A. Harmache et al.) but is much more divergent in Env when compared to the subgroup A clones Petaluma (34TF10) and FIV-PPR (76 and 78% divergence

Feline immunodeficiency virus is shed in semen from experimentally and naturally infected cats.

Although a laboratory isolate of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), FIV-NCSU1, has been transmitted by artificial insemination in domestic cats, transmission by naturally infected males during mating has not been reported. In order to determine whether virus shedding in semen is unique to the NCSU1 isolate, we analyzed electroejaculates from four specific-pathogen-free males infected with another laboratory strain, FIV-Petaluma, and eight random source males with naturally acquired infections. Seminal cell lysates from the cats infected with the Petaluma isolate were screened by nested polym
