Preoperative Immunonutrition Significantly Reduced Surgical Site Infection After Urinary Diversion for Invasive Bladder Cancer: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Radical cystectomy and ileal conduit have a high incidence of surgical site infection. In this study, we evaluated the effects of preoperative immunonutrition on its incidence following these procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 86 patients who underwent radical cystectomy and ileal conduit at our hospital between 2014 October and 2021 July. They were sequentially divided into the Immunonutrition group (n = 43) and Control group (n = 43). Patients in the Immunonutrition group drank 4 packs of IMPACT (Nestle, Japan) per day for 5 days before surgery. IMPAC

Nutritional and Microbiota-Based Approaches in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: From Prevention to Treatment.

Metabolic alterations, including hypermetabolism, lipid imbalances, and glucose dysregulation, are pivotal contributors to the onset and progression of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). These changes exacerbate systemic energy deficits, heighten oxidative stress, and fuel neuroinflammation. Simultaneously, gastrointestinal dysfunction and gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis intensify disease pathology by driving immune dysregulation, compromising the intestinal barrier, and altering gut-brain axis (GBA) signaling, and lastly advancing neurodegeneration. Therapeutic and preventive strategies focus

Effect of dietary fat on intestinal inflammatory diseases.

Dietary fat has multiple roles on human health, and some dietary fat is used to treat organic diseases because of its anti-inflammatory effect. It is commonly accepted that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) is beneficial on ischemic heart disease or rheumatic arthritis. On the contrary, effect of omega-3-PUFA on Crohn's disease remained controversial. That effect of omega-3 PUFA differs according to the location of inflamed intestine was hypothesized. To elucidate this hypothesis, to investigate the role of dietary fat on disease activity in different kind of murine models of intestina

Dietary 1.3-1.6 yeast β-glucans enhance immune response and disease resilience in European seabass challenged with Tenacibaculum maritimum.

INTRODUCTION: Nutritional strategies have emerged as promising tools to modulate immune responses in marine fish, particularly at mucosal surfaces involved in host-pathogen interactions. Dietary immunomodulators such as yeast-derived β-glucans (BG) have gained attention for their capacity to enhance innate immune defenses, however their role in coordinating these mechanisms during bacterial infections remains incompletely understood. METHODS: This study evaluated the effects of two dietary inclusion levels (0.06 and 0.12%) of purified yeast β-1,3/1,6-glucans on the immune responses of Europea

Bifidobacteria infantis and human milk oligosaccharides have independent and synergistic effects on immune response and amino acid metabolism in germ-free mouse models.

UNLABELLED: Early-life microbial colonization is essential for gut and immune development. Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) support the growth of Bifidobacterium infantis (BI). Here, we studied the individual and combined effects of BI and HMOs on the immune and colon transcriptomes and on serum and cecal metabolome. Germ-free mice were randomly assigned to four groups (10-14/group: HMO, BI, BI + HMO, and control [no HMO or BI]). HMO and BI + HMO groups received 5 mg/day each of 2'-fucosyllactose, lacto-N-tetraose, and 3'-sialyllactose for 14 days. BI and BI + HMO received BI ATCC 15,697 (1

[Nutrition in acute pancreatitis].

Nutritional concepts in acute pancreatitis are undergoing a rapid change. An early start of nutrition via nasojejunal tubes is about to replace parenteral nutrition. Yesterday it was believed that the pancreas had to be put at rest. Thus, stimulation of pancreatic secretion by enteral nutrition was believed to be detrimental. However, on comparing the results of enteral with those of parenteral nutrition, the pancreatic infection rates, rate of surgical interventions, days of hospital stay, and costs are found to be significantly reduced. Whether or not enteral nutrition decreases mortality ha

Dietary microalgae Schizochytrium spp. and Nannochloropsis gaditana modulate antioxidant and immune-related gene expression in ewes' monocytes and neutrophils.

The inclusion of microalgae in ruminant nutrition offers a well-documented approach to enhance the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) profile of animal products while potentially modulating immune and oxidative functions. This study evaluated the long-term effects of dietary supplementation with Schizochytrium spp. and Nannochloropsis gaditana on the oxidative-inflammatory interplay in dairy ewes. Thirty-two crossbred dairy ewes in early lactation (50 ± 5 d in milk) were divided into four homogeneous groups (n = 8 per group) based on milk yield, body weight, and age. The control group (CON)
