Clinicopathologic features in 14 cases of lymph node-involved angiocentric immunoproliferative lesions (AILs) are reported. They were selected from 900 cases of lymphoproliferative disorders registered at the Department of Pathology, Fukuoka University. Four cases showed a histologic feature of AIL grade II (AIL-II) and 10 had angiocentric lymphoma (AIL-III). Immunohistologically, transformed B cells were mixed with a large number of small T cells in AIL-II. In AIL-III, there were five cases with B-cell lymphoma, and three had peripheral T-cell lymphoma with no expression of natural-killer (NK

(1) Background: Haematological malignancies (HMs) represent a heterogeneous group of mostly rare cancers that differ in pathophysiology, incidence, and outcome. (2) Methods: Our study aims to understand the epidemiological situation and trends of 24 main types of HMs in Belgium over a 15-year period, with a focus on the impact of age. Age-standardised incidence, average annual percentage change (AAPC), 5- and 10-year relative survival (RS) and RS trends were estimated for all HMs (N = 94,415) diagnosed between 2004 and 2018. (3) Results: Incidence rates of HM increased, mainly in the 70+ age g

Immunoglobulins that reversibly precipitate at temperatures below 37 °C are called cryoglobulins (CGs). Cryoglobulinemia often manifests as cryoglobulinemic vasculitis (CV), whose symptoms range in severity from purpuric eruptions to life-threatening features. The majority of CV patients are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), whereas lymphoproliferative disorders or connective tissue diseases (CTD) are commonly diagnosed among patients with CV of non-infectious origin. In the absence of detectable associated disease, cryoglobulinemia is classified as "essential" (EMC). All HCV-positive CV

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder of the small bowel that occurs in genetically predisposed people of all ages from middle infancy. Most common period of presentation is between six month and two years of age. Coeliac disease is caused by a reaction to gliadin, a gluten protein found in wheat. Upon exposure to gliadin, the enzyme tissue transglutaminase modifies the protein and the immune system cross reacts with the bowel tissue, causing an inflammatory reaction that leads to flattening of the lining of the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrient's. Here we d

Recent evidence suggests that a significant proportion of primary gastrointestinal lymphomas are driven by exogenous agents/antigens. In the stomach, Helicobacter pylori appears to be responsible for most cases of low-grade lymphomas (MALToma), whereas an infectious etiology is suspected in immunoproliferative small intestine disease (IPSID). Similarly, enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphomas appear to result from a disordered response to gluten, although this profile remains controversial. Accordingly, although traditional antineoplastic treatments, such as surgery and radiation, are still im

A strong association was found to exist between patterns of lymphoid malignancies and socioeconomic status. B-cell lymphomas and T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia are much more prevalent in developing countries where the chances of acquiring infections especially at a younger age are high. B-cell precursor acute lymphatic leukemia, however, are much more prevalent in the Western world. Many infectious agents are associated with lymphatic malignancies. Epstein-Barr virus is involved in African Burkitt's lymphoma, human immunodeficiency virus-related Burkitt's lymphoma, lymphoproliferative syndrome

BACKGROUND: The observed seasonal and geographic variations in the incidence of immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (IPSID) suggest that environmental factors contribute to its pathogenesis. One such environmental factor, the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), has been associated with other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders.
METHODS: IPSID tissues obtained at the time of initial diagnosis were retrieved from the American University of Beirut pathology archives (1972-1983) and examined for EBV genetic information by colorimetric in situ hybridization (ISH) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR

INTRODUCTION: Metreleptin is a form of leptin replacement therapy used with diet and lifestyle modifications to treat the metabolic complications of leptin deficiency in lipodystrophy, a rare disease characterized by adipose tissue deficiency. Previously, identification of T-cell lymphomas in three metreleptin-treated patients with acquired generalized lipodystrophy (AGL) suggested a possible relationship between metreleptin and lymphoma development. To further investigate this, we performed a real-world pharmacovigilance assessment and literature review to identify lymphomas in patients with

BACKGROUND: Radiologic evaluation of small bowel is usually done by barium examination, which involves considerable radiation exposure. A new sonographic method, sonoenteroclysis, is a promising technique for diagnosing small intestinal disorders. In this study the applicability, performance, and diagnostic yield of sonoenteroclysis were assessed and the results of this novel method were compared with those of barium enteroclysis.
METHODS: Forty-five consecutive patients with suspected small bowel disorder were studied. All patients underwent abdominal ultrasound before and after infusion of

We have compared the distribution of lambda-light-chain variable-region (V lambda) subgroups among Ig lambda molecules found in the serum of normal individuals with that of monoclonal Ig lambda components obtained from patients with plasma cell and related immunoproliferative disorders. A panel of monoclonal antibodies specific for each of the major human V lambda subgroups--V lambda I, V lambda II, V lambda III, V lambda IV, V lambda VI, and V lambda VIII--was used in a highly sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to quantitate each of these populations. The mean distribution of

PROBLEM: We investigated the therapeutic effect of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in women with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL).
METHOD OF STUDY: This was a retrospective observational study. Total 189 RPL women who experienced ≥2 miscarriages were enrolled and investigated conventional etiologies, thrombophilia, and cellular immunity. Patients were divided into four groups; known etiology with (Gr1) and without cellular immune abnormality (Gr2), unknown etiology with (Gr3) and without cellular immune abnormality (Gr4). IVIG was administrated from early pregnancy to 30 weeks of gestation to

95 of 1,019 (9.3%) sera with monoclonal immunoglobulins (MIg) were found to have cold-reacting lymphocytotoxins (LCT). There was no difference in the prevalence of LCT in multiple myeloma, macroglobulinemia, cancer, lymphoma or benign monoclonal gammopathy. Prevalence of LCT was similar in various classes and types of MIg with the exception of the IgG/lambda group in which LCT were more common than in IgG/K (p = 0.013). IgMs had the most potent whereas IgAs had the weakest LCT activity. MIg were purified from 61 LCT-positive sera. 25 pure MIg (41%) had LCT activity. In the rest, LCT activity r

Lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LYG)/angiocentric immunoproliferative lesions (AIL) consist of angiocentric and angiodestructive lymphoreticular proliferation predominantly involving the lungs and other extranodal sites, such as the central nervous system (CNS). This clinical entity is considered as a B cell process related to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and EBV positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The CNS is involved in 20% of cases of LYG, but initial involvement is rare. In cases without pulmonary symptoms, diagnosis may be difficult. We report a rare case involving initial progressi

The occurrence of cancers in patients with primary humoral immunodeficiency syndrome (X-linked agammaglobulinemia, common variable immunodeficiency, IgA deficiency) is more than mere coincidence. An increased risk of non Hodgkin's lymphoma and gastric adenocarcinoma, particularly for patients with common variable immunodeficiency, is well established. A literature review is presented on this subject with analysis of case reports, prospective and retrospective studies, and data from the Minnesota Immunodeficiency Cancer Registry.

Monoclonal immunoglobulin deposition occurs in tissues as Congo Red binding fibrils in light chain amyloidosis, as less structured deposits in light chain deposition disease, and as similar but distinct deposits in light and heavy chain deposition disease. The nonamyloid forms were found in 13 patients who had evidence of plasmacytic dyscrasia by the immunohistochemical detection of immunoglobulin light chains of kappa or lambda class (with or without staining for a single heavy chain isotype) and by the absence of amyloid P component in tissue sections that did not show the birefringence char

The ultrastructural appearances of corneal crystalloidal deposits are described in two patients with an IgG-kappa paraproteinemia of uncertain pathogenesis. The crystalloids in one patient were overwhelmingly intracellular and were found mainly in stromal keratocytes, but also in basal corneal epithelial cells and the limbal vascular endothelium. Four types of crystalloid or immunoprotein-containing granules were recognizable in this case: 1) fibrillary crystalloids with a curvilinear filamentous substructure; 2) angulated geometric crystalloids that often had a linear filamentous substructure

BACKGROUND: Immunoproliferative small intestine disease (IPSID) encompasses a primary intestinal lymphoma of underpriviliged populations of North Africa, Middle East, etc. This epidemiological feature strongly implicates environmental and host (genetic) factors in its pathogenesis. IPSID can be distinguished on clinicopathological grounds from "Western-type" intestinal lymphomas. "IPSID-like" lymphomas had been sporadically identified, i.e., patients with original clinico-analytical data of IPSID (chronic diarrhoea, malabsortion, clubbing of fingers, diffuse intestinal involvement, etc.) witho

Somatic gain-of-function mutations in members of the RAS subfamily of small guanosine triphosphatases are found in > 30% of all human cancers. We recently described a syndrome of chronic nonmalignant lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, and autoimmunity associated with a mutation in NRAS affecting hematopoietic cells, and initially we classified the disease as a variant of the autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome. Here, we demonstrate that somatic mutations in the related KRAS gene can also be associated with a nonmalignant syndrome of autoimmunity and breakdown of leukocyte homeostasis. The acti
