Impulsivity is associated with behavioral decision-making deficits.

Impaired decision-making is a key-feature of many neuropsychiatric disorders. In the present study, we examined task performance in a healthy population consisting of those whose scores indicated high and low impulsivity on several behavioral decision-making tasks reflecting orbitofrontal functioning. The measures included tasks that assess decision-making with and without a learning component and choice flexibility. The results show that subjects high on impulsivity display an overall deficit in their decision-making performance as compared with subjects low on impulsivity. More specifically,

The significance of aggression and impulsivity for self-mutilative behavior.

Self-mutilative behavior (SMB) is presented as a specific form of inwardly directed aggressiveness which is thought to be associated with problems of impulse control. Conceptual problems concerning impulsivity and impulsive aggression are discussed. Among different forms of dyscontrolled behavior, SMB is of special heuristic interest because of distinction can be made between patients committing impulsive and those committing premeditated self-harming actions. Psychometric and biological measures of impulsivity and aggressiveness were assessed in self-mutilators in comparison to depressives an

Increased vulnerability to impulsive behavior after streptococcal antigen exposure and antibiotic treatment in rats.

RATIONALE: The inflammation induced by Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infection has been viewed as a vulnerability factor in mental disorders characterized by inhibitory control deficits, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Antibiotic treatment reduces GAS symptoms; however, its effects on impulsivity have not been fully assessed. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether GAS exposure during early adolescence might be a vulnerability factor for adult impulsivity, if antibiotic treatment acts as a protective factor, and whether these differences are accomp

Two pathways toward impulsive action: an integrative risk model for bulimic behavior in youth.

BACKGROUND: This study provides an integrative review of existing risk factors and models for bulimia nervosa (BN) in young girls. We offer a new model for BN that describes two pathways of risk that may lead to the initial impulsive act of binge eating and purging in children and adolescents. SCOPE: We conducted a selective literature review, focusing on existing and new risk processes for BN in this select population. FINDINGS: We identify two ways in which girls increase their risk to begin engaging in the impulsive behavior of binge eating and purging. The first is state-based: the exper

Dissociable effects of monoamine reuptake inhibitors on distinct forms of impulsive behavior in rats.

RATIONALE: High levels of impulsivity are a core symptom of psychiatric disorders such as ADHD, mania, personality disorders and drug addiction. The effectiveness of drugs targeting dopamine (DA), noradrenaline (NA) and/or serotonin (5-HT) in the treatment of impulse control disorders emphasizes the role of monoaminergic neurotransmission in impulsivity. However, impulsive behavior is behaviorally and neurally heterogeneous, and several caveats remain in our understanding of the role of monoamines in impulse control. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the role of DA, NA and 5-HT in tw

From Inner Sense to Outer Action: Interoception and Impulsive Compulsive Behavior Disorders in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Impulsive-compulsive behavior disorders (ICBDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) include impulse control disorders (ICDs) and compulsive behaviors, often linked to dopaminergic treatment and altered reward processing. Interoception, the perception of internal bodily signals, plays a key role in emotional regulation and decision-making. Neuroimaging studies suggest that alterations in interoceptive and reward-related brain circuits may underlie ICDs in PD. However, the relationship between interoception and ICDs remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between i

White matter correlates of impulsive behavior in healthy individuals: A diffusion magnetic resonance imaging study.

AIM: To explore white matter (WM) tracts linked to impulsivity using the diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (DMRI) connectometry method. METHODS: We analyzed 218 healthy participants from the Leipzig Study for Mind-Body-Emotion Interactions database. Impulsivity correlations with DMRI-derived WM changes were assessed using Urgency-Premeditation-Perseverance-Sensation (UPPS) Impulsive Behavior Scale subscales: lack of perseverance (PE), lack of premeditation (PM), sensation seeking (SS), and negative urgency. DMRI data were processed using connectometry, adjusting for sex and age, to examine

Impulsive behavior in adults with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder: characterization of attentional, motor and cognitive impulsiveness.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. Impulsivity persists in adults with ADHD and might be the basis of much of the impairment observed in the daily lives of such individuals. The objective of this study was to address the presence, and more importantly, the three dimensions of impulsivity: attentional, non-planning and motor, in how they may relate to neuropsychological mechanisms of impulse control. We studied a sample of 50 adults with ADHD and 51 healthy comparison controls using the Barratt Impulsivity Scale Vers

Understanding the role of impulsivity and externalizing psychopathology in alcohol abuse: application of the UPPS impulsive behavior scale.

The present study explores the relation among 4 personality traits associated with impulsive behavior and alcohol abuse. Personality traits were measured using the 4 subscales of the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS; S. P. Whiteside & D. R. Lynam, 2001). The UPPS and measures of psychopathology were administered to clinical samples of alcohol abusers high in antisocial personality traits (AAPD), alcohol abusers low in antisocial personality traits (AA), and a control group (total N = 60). Separate analyses of variance indicated that AAPDs had significant elevations on all 4 UPPS scales, whe

On the Neurobiological Role of Oxidative Stress in Alcohol-Induced Impulsive, Aggressive and Suicidal Behavior.

Objectives: Alcohol abuse is known to result in behavioral impairments (such as increased impulsivity, aggressive, and suicidal behavior), but the neurobiological basis for these behavioral impairments remains unknown. The objective of this review is to propose a neurobiological basis for alcohol-induced aggression, impulsivity, and suicidal behavior. Methods: Search was done by accessing PubMed/Medline, EBSCO, and PsycINFO databases. The search string used was "(Alcohol OR Alcoholism* OR Alcohol Abuse) AND (Behavior* OR Behavioral Impairment or Disorder) AND (Oxidative Stress OR Reactive Oxyg

Effects of Suvorexant, a Dual Orexin/Hypocretin Receptor Antagonist, on Impulsive Behavior Associated with Cocaine.

Hypothalamic hypocretin (orexin) peptides mediate arousal, attention, and reward processing. Fibers containing orexins project to brain structures that govern motivated behavior, including the ventral tegmental area (VTA). A number of psychiatric conditions, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorders, are characterized by deficits in impulse control, however the relationship between orexin and impulsive behavior is incompletely characterized. The effects of systemic or centrally administered orexin receptor (OXR) antagonists on measures of impulsive-l

[Aggressive and impulsive behavior: neurobiological models explain how affectregulation might work and social skills develop].

A person's impulsive actions are characterized by a lack of sufficient planning or an assessment of possibly harmful consequences. An impulse control disorder can be diagnosed if such actions occur frequently, even in low-stress situations. In psychiatry there are a number of syndromes that are associated with an impulse control disorder. Neurobiological findings point to a reduced turnover of serotonin in the brain of persons with an impulse control disorder and aggressive behaviour. However, a reduced turnover of serotonin is also found in persons who can consume immoderate amounts of alcoho

The prediction of impulsive behavior: comparative validities of obvious vs. subtle MMPI hypomania (MA) items.

Assessed the relative predictive validity of obvious (0), neutral (N), and subtle (S) items of the MMPI Ma scale (N = 86 males). Subtle-obvious ratings were compared to criteria in the three types of measurement delineated by Cattell, namely, questionnaire, life-history, and objective tests. Ma-O was correlated positively with the Experience Seeking factor of the Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS) as well as time taken and errors on the Porteus Maze, while Ma-S was correlated positively with the Thrill and Adventure Seeking factor of the SSS and the biographic questionnaire. Ma-N, on the other hand

Neurobiological etiology of impulsivity in the context of aggressive behaviors in schizophrenia.

The main aim of the article was to show the importance of impulsivity as a background to aggressive behaviour displayed by people on the schizophrenia spectrum with particular attention to its biological determinants, including genetic ones. Imaging tests of the central nervous system allow for locating the centres responsible for particular types of impulsiveness and for modulating impulsive reactions. Excessive impulsivity may be attributed to disturbances in serotoninergic, dopaminergic, and noradrenergic neurotransmission, as well as disrupted functioning of other neurochemical pathways du
