Evaluating the impact of an educational intervention with cognitive rehearsal training on preparing pre-registration nursing students to respond to workplace incivility.

BACKGROUND: Workplace incivility can cause distress to nursing students and adversely affect team cohesiveness which can then negatively affect the quality of patient care. Preparing students to foster healthy work environments and deal with acts of incivility that threaten teamwork and patient safety becomes increasingly important as nursing students progress through their academic careers. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the impact of structured education based on cognitive rehearsal response training on pre-registration nursing students' self-efficacy perceptions in dealing with wor

'We don't accept disrespectful behaviour': Exploring the experience and management of workplace incivility across different contexts in the veterinary industry.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the impact of workplace incivility on veterinary professionals, coping strategies at various levels, and variations dependent on context to provide practical recommendations for organisational management of incivility. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews based on the critical incident technique were employed, involving 18 veterinary professionals in various contexts and roles at participating organisations in the UK. The qualitative data were analysed using conventional content analysis. RESULTS: The findings indicate adverse impacts of incivility, with organi

Alcohol and drug use among sexual minority college students and their heterosexual counterparts: the effects of experiencing and witnessing incivility and hostility on campus.

PURPOSE: Research suggests that discrimination contributes to increased substance use among sexual minorities. Subtle discrimination and witnessing mistreatment, however, have received little attention. Using minority stress theory as a conceptual framework the authors examined the intersection of sexual orientation, experiencing and witnessing incivility and hostility, and students' alcohol and drug use. The authors hypothesized that experiencing/witnessing incivility/hostility would mediate the relationship between sexual minority status and drinking and drug use, as well as problematic use

From Work Screens to Home Scenes: Investigating the Association of Daily Email Incivility With Aggression and Withdrawal at Home Using a Daily Diary Approach.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a cultural shift in how and where employees work, increasing the prevalence of remote work and the use of information and communication technologies (ICT), such as email, to facilitate work interactions. The increased use of ICT has made the experience of email incivility more common, therefore in the present study, we integrated affective events theory with the perseverative cognition model of stress to examine the spillover effects of daily active email incivility on at-home behaviour. We further examined daily work-related affective rumination as a mechanism

Incivility Is Associated with Burnout and Reduced Compassion Satisfaction: A Mixed-Method Study to Identify Causes of Burnout among Oncology Clinical Research Coordinators.

While oncology clinical research coordinators (CRCs) experience a combination of factors that are thought to put them at increased risk for burnout, very little research has been conducted to understand the risk factors associated with burnout among CRCs. We used a mixed-method approach, including self-report questionnaires to assess burnout and compassion satisfaction, as well as individual and interpersonal variables hypothesized to impact CRC well-being. We also conducted a focus group to gain a more nuanced understanding of coordinators' experiences around burnout, teamwork, resilience, an

The Impact of Workplace Bullying and Organizational Incivility on Nurses' Emotional Distress: Exploring Parallel Mediation Through Life Satisfaction and Functional Impairment-A Cross-Sectional Study.

Workplace bullying and organizational incivility are widespread psychosocial hazards in healthcare, putting nurses at a heightened risk for emotional distress. While prior research has demonstrated their harmful effects, the mechanisms through which these stressors influence psychological outcomes are still not well understood. Guided by the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study aimed to investigate whether life satisfaction and work and social adjustment function as parallel mediators linking workplace mistreatment to emotional distress among nurses. A cross-sectional survey was

Application of an empowerment model to improve civility in nursing education.

Incivility within nursing education presents clear challenges to both students and faculty. The consequences of incivility extend beyond the educational process and into practice, thereby creating an urgent need for a framework that can guide faculty in the efforts to improve and maintain civility in nursing education. This article reviews the complex problem of incivility in nursing education and utilizes evidence in the application of an empowerment model (Worrell et al., 1996) as a framework to set the standard of civility and one that will guide intervention in the unfortunate event that i

Development and validation of the uncivil workplace behavior questionnaire.

This article describes the development and validation of a new measure of workplace incivility, the Uncivil Workplace Behavior Questionnaire (UWBQ). Participants included 5 samples of Australian adult employees (total N=368). Principal axis factoring of the UWBQ yielded 4 interpretable factors (Hostility, Privacy Invasion, Exclusionary Behavior, and Gossiping), all of which exhibited high internal consistency. The 4-factor structure received further support from a confirmatory factor analysis on a hold-out sample. A series of correlation and regression analyses revealed that the UWBQ subscales

Sources of stress in impoverished neighbourhoods: insights into links between neighbourhood environments and health.

OBJECTIVE: This paper explores associations between residents' perceptions of social incivilities and physical disorders in local environments and self-reported health status. METHOD: Surveys were conducted with 4,029 residents from 13 Neighbourhood Renewal sites and 1,857 residents of corresponding Local Government Areas in Victoria. An open-ended question asked respondents to nominate the worst things about living in their neighbourhood and this qualitative data was analysed for the range of perceptions of incivilities. Quantitative data analysis considered associations between incivilities

Professional virtue of civility and the responsibilities of medical educators and academic leaders.

Incivility among physicians, between physicians and learners, and between physicians and nurses or other healthcare professionals has become commonplace. If allowed to continue unchecked by academic leaders and medical educators, incivility can cause personal psychological injury and seriously damage organisational culture. As such, incivility is a potent threat to professionalism. This paper uniquely draws on the history of professional ethics in medicine to provide a historically based, philosophical account of the professional virtue of civility. We use a two-step method of ethical reasonin

Study of Cyclin D1 Expression in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Oral Cavity.

Incivility in online commenting sections can create a hostile environment and result in the silencing of vulnerable voices. Accordingly, content websites and social media platforms have an ethical responsibility-one that aligns with their strategic interests-to minimize users' exposure to uncivil content. To this end, platforms invest great effort and budget in automatic and manual filtering mechanisms. Yet, these efforts create a competing ethical quandary, as they often come at the expense of free expression, particularly in cases where comments do not explicitly infringe on stated guideline

Safer at home? Associations between working from home, workplace mistreatment, inclusion, and well-being in a sample of Canadian hybrid workers.

BackgroundThe move to working from home necessitated by COVID-19 gave way to debate among employers and employees over return-to-office mandates and the merits of remote work. Amidst these discussions, employee narratives emerged centering on the improved work experience at home, including minimized mistreatment, stress, and emotional exhaustion.ObjectiveWe investigate whether working from home presents an unacknowledged benefit by buffering employees from experiencing incivility and microaggressions, thus affecting their sense of inclusion and well-being.MethodsThe sample comprised 428 Canadi

Digital She-nanigans: Social media users' response toward online hostilities targeting a female science communicator with marginalized identities.

Online hostility poses a growing societal challenge, yet quantitative evidence on how social media users respond to different kinds of hostility targeting different identities is limited, even though insights into bystander perceptions are detrimental to combat the online hate endemic. This online experiment (N = 461) examines cognitive (perceived acceptability), affective (negative emotions), and behavioral (intervention intentions) responses to varyingly hostile comments (impolite vs uncivil vs intolerant) directed at a female science communicator with different ethnic (Black vs White) and L

An investigation of psychological well-being among platform riders in mainland China.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationships between work stressors (i.e., precarious work conditions, customer incivility, fast work pace, and job insecurity) and their relations with job satisfaction and emotional exhaustion among platform drivers in mainland China. In addition, we tested whether psychological capital (PsyCap) moderated the hypothesized relationships. METHODS: 2539 platform drivers (Men = 2244; Women = 295, Mean age = 28.18, SD = 6.38) in Mainland China were recruited. RESULTS: Work stressors were positively related to emotional exhaustion but negatively associated wi

Prevalence of Emotional Exhaustion Among Respiratory Therapists.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory therapists (RTs) face high burnout risk, with rates as high as 79% reported during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that the rate of burnout has decreased since the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We performed a multi-center, multinational study between January 6 and February 1, 2025, evaluating the prevalence of RT burnout. Validated survey instruments were used to measure emotional exhaustion (burnout), incivility, intent to leave, and leadership. RESULTS: We received 1,033 responses (34% response rate). Seven hundred nineteen (70%) respondents were burned out, wi

Neighborhood environmental attributes and walking mobility decline: A longitudinal ecological study of mid-to-older aged Australian adults.

OBJECTIVES: Cross-sectional studies have found some built environmental attributes to be associated with residents' lower levels of mobility (functional capacity to walk outside the home). However, less is known about what environmental attributes are related to mobility decline. This longitudinal study examined area-level associations of specific environmental attributes with mid-to-older aged adults' changes in walking mobility. METHODS: Data collected from 4,088 adults (aged 46-71 years at baseline) who participated in a cohort study in Brisbane, Australia were used. The outcome was the ch

How social stressors at work influence marital behaviors at home: An interpersonal model of work-family spillover.

Drawing on conservation of resources and related theories, this study develops and tests an interpersonal model of work-family spillover. Our model specifies how social stressors at work (i.e., workplace incivility, abusive supervision, interpersonal conflict) result in the experience of a social-based form of work-family conflict, ultimately influencing marital behaviors at home, on a daily basis. The mediating role of burnout and the moderating role of trust were also examined. A 2-week experience-sampling study with daily employee surveys at work and at home and with spousal ratings for emp
