Coping strategies in female survivors of childhood sexual abuse from two Canadian and two New Zealand cultural groups.

Individuals from some minority cultures are at greater risk of experiencing childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and are also at heightened risk of negative outcomes from abuse. Coping strategies, which may mediate the relationship between CSA and outcomes, are also impacted by culture. This study examined the use of coping strategies in female survivors of CSA across 4 cultural groupings from 2 countries-86 European Canadians, 40 Native Canadians, 129 European New Zealanders, and 35 Māori New Zealanders-who all completed the Coping Responses Inventory. The 4 groups differed significantly on 7 of the

Examining the effectiveness of the PAX-GOOD BEHAVIOUR GAME in improving the mental health and academic outcomes of FIRST NATIONS children in Canada: a clustered randomized controlled trial using administrative data.

PURPOSE: PAX Good Behaviour Game (PAX-GBG), a school-based mental health promotion approach, has been shown to improve children's mental health and academic outcomes. Given that these effects have yet to be shown in Indigenous populations, a partnership with First Nations communities was created to evaluate PAX-GBG's effectiveness among First Nations children living in Canada. METHODS: In this clustered randomized controlled trial, we used population-based administrative data that allowed de-identified individual-level linkages. Our cohort from 20 First Nations schools was assigned to PAX-GBG

Housing conditions and adverse birth outcomes among Indigenous people in Canada.

OBJECTIVES: Poor housing conditions and household crowding have been identified as important health concerns for Indigenous populations in many countries but have not been explored in relation to adverse birth outcomes in these populations. We investigated housing conditions and adverse birth outcomes in a nationally representative sample of Indigenous people in Canada. METHODS: Data were from a cohort of births between May 2004 and May 2006 created by linking birth and infant death registration data with the 2006 Canadian census. Log-binomial regression was used to examine associations betwe

Atypical presentation of Takayasu aortitis and myocarditis contributing to sudden death in a young Canadian first nations adult.

This is a rare presentation of Takayasu arteritis in a 30-year-old Canadian First Nations woman with cardiac and aortic root-predominant disease, which manifested in complete heart block. She had a past medical history significant for substance misuse. At presentation, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging identified diffuse thickening of the left atrium and ventricular outflow tract with left ventricular cavity dilation and preserved systolic function. A pacemaker was inserted at this time. Nine months later, the patient died following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the context of cocaine

Suicidality of Indigenous Teenagers as an Anomic Adaptation to Frustration: An Empirical Test (Correlates of Indigenous Teenage Suicidality).

INTRODUCTION: This study advances a frustration-suicidality thesis, conceptualizing suicidality as an anomic adaptation to frustrations experienced by Indigenous adolescents. METHODS: Using a subsample from the Aboriginal People's Survey 2017 (released 2023), we examine suicidal ideation among Indigenous adolescents aged 15 to 18 years in Canada with weighted least squares regression. Frustration is operationalized through indicators of unfulfilled life conditions, including school dropouts, functional disability, residential instability, and unmet medical needs. RESULTS: The regression mode

Perinatal wellbeing through restoring healthy family systems in a nêhiyaw (Plains Cree) community: a mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: A collaborative research partnership in Alberta (Canada) was formed with the goal of supporting optimal health during the perinatal period for diverse Indigenous populations. Our approach utilized community-led strategies that promote the best possible healthy life for families and children. This partnership was guided by a Restoring and Supporting Healthy Family Systems (RSHFS) conceptual model based primarily on Indigenous ways of knowing. We sought to explore components of the RSHFS model with members of a nêhiyaw (Plains Cree) community of childbearing age, focused on refinin

Family, culture, community: a northern First Nations community-directed needs assessment for paediatric rehabilitation care.

The Elders Advisory group in the northern Saskatchewan Cree community of Pelican Narrows (PN) and Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) directed researchers that access to paediatric rehabilitation services was an urgent priority for research collaboration. In partnership with PN and PBCN, a community needs assessment (CNA) was implemented to a) develop, sustain and nurture new and existing community-researcher relationships and b) identify community needs and preferences for paediatric rehabilitation. A community-based participatory action research approach incorporating Indigenous research pri

Long-distance travel for birthing among Indigenous and non-Indigenous pregnant people in Canada.

BACKGROUND: For Indigenous Peoples in Canada, birthing on or near traditional territories in the presence of family and community is of foundational cultural and social importance. We aimed to evaluate the association between Indigenous identity and distance travelled for birth in Canada. METHODS: We obtained data from the Maternity Experiences Survey, a national population-based sample of new Canadian people aged 15 years or older who gave birth (defined as mothers) and were interviewed in 2006-2007. We compared Indigenous with non-Indigenous Canadian-born mothers and adjusted for geographic

Similarities and differences in cardiometabolic risk factors among remote Aboriginal Australian and Canadian cohorts.

AIM: Indigenous populations of Australia and Canada experience disproportionately high rates of chronic disease. We hypothesized that despite the common outcome of increased diabetes prevalence, differences in cardiometabolic risk profile may exist between these populations. METHODS: We compared community-based data on cardiometabolic risks in Aboriginal Australians (n=297 without, 45 with diabetes), and Aboriginal Canadians (n=409 without, 87 with diabetes). RESULTS: Despite strikingly lower weight (62 vs 83 kg, p<0.0001) and body mass index (BMI, 22 vs 29 kg/m(2), p<0.0001), Aboriginal Aus

Indigenous Gambling and Problem Gambling in Canada.

The present study provides a profile of Canadian Indigenous gambling and problem gambling using the 2018 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) (n = 23,952 adults; 1,324 Indigenous) and an online panel survey of 10,199 gamblers (n = 589 Indigenous). The relative popularity of different types of gambling was similar between Indigenous and non-Indigenous samples. However, there was higher Indigenous participation in electronic gambling machines (EGMs), bingo, instant lotteries, overall gambling and a higher rate of problem gambling (2.0% versus 0.5%). Variables predictive of Indigenous problem

A Systematic Scoping Review of Indigenous People's Experience of Healing and Recovery from Child Sexual Abuse: A Protocol.

Child sexual abuse is a form of violence that occurs across nations and cultures. Collective efforts are being made to address this issue within many Indigenous communities. In Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have expressed the need for cultural models of healing child sexual abuse. A preliminary exploration of the relevant literature shows a lack of synthesis with regard to the current evidence base. This protocol outlines the methods and background for a scoping review that aims to explore and collate the broad scope of literature related to healing from child se

Our Health Counts Toronto: Commercial tobacco use among Indigenous peoples in Toronto.

OBJECTIVE: Fueled by the commercial tobacco industry, commercial tobacco use continues to be the leading preventable cause of premature death in Canada, with opportunities to improve health outcomes. The objective of this research was to work with Indigenous partners to generate Indigenous population prevalence estimates of commercial tobacco use in Toronto, and examine the association between smoking and sociodemographic, cultural, resiliency, and social variables. METHODS: Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) was used to generate prevalence estimates of commercial tobacco use and potentially as

Population-based birth cohort study on diabetes in pregnancy and infant hospitalisations in Cree, other First Nations and non-Indigenous communities in Quebec.

OBJECTIVES: Diabetes in pregnancy, whether pre-gestational (chronic) or gestational (de novo hyperglycaemia), increases the risk of adverse birth outcomes. It is unclear whether gestational diabetes increases the risk of postnatal morbidity in infants. Cree First Nations in Quebec are at high risk for diabetes in pregnancy. We assessed whether pre-gestational or gestational diabetes may increase infant hospitalisation (an infant morbidity indicator) incidence, and whether this may be related to more frequent infant hospitalisations in Cree and other First Nations in Quebec. DESIGN: Population

Barriers to care for mental health conditions in Canada.

There are growing concerns in Canada about access barriers to quality mental health care, which has worsened significantly by the COVID-19 pandemic and for some Canadians more than others. With a nationally representative sample of 1501 adults, surveyed by the Angus Reid Institute, this study examined the mental health conditions Canadians experience the most difficulties in accessing care. Among half of the respondents who sought mental health care, the majority encountered challenges in accessing help for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (34%) and depression (33%). When examining the dat

The ethical dilemmas in the face of resource limitations for children needing surgery.

Children living in remote and Indigenous communities in Canada often face significant barriers to timely surgical care due to geographic isolation, limited local resources, and financial pressures within a publicly funded healthcare system. These challenges frequently create ethical dilemmas for clinicians and families, who must choose between delaying care for transfer to a tertiary center or proceeding locally with limited expertise. This paper explores three illustrative cases including emergent neonatal volvulus with no possibility of transfer, pyloric stenosis with family-declined transfe

A remote first nation community-informed virtual care approach to chronic back pain management: a mixed methods study.

Chronic back pain (CBP) is a widespread public health issue. There is a lack of community-based care options for Indigenous Peoples with CBP. A virtual care clinic co-designed with community was implemented in the Cree Community of Pelican Narrows using remote presence (RPR) technology. Methods We used a community-based participatory action framework and pre-post design to evaluate this intervention. Pain, quality of life and experience outcomes were measured. An assessment was provided by a local nurse practitioner and a physical therapist joining over RPR. The physical therapist provided jp

Between racism and rumors: understanding vaccine mistrust among older racially diverse adults in Canada.

COVID-19 vaccination plays a crucial role in reducing infection, hospitalization, and mortality. However, although the pandemic disproportionately affected racialized and Indigenous older adults, little is known about their attitudes and trust toward vaccines. This cross-sectional study examined COVID-19 vaccine mistrust and its associations with health literacy, conspiracy beliefs, and racial discrimination among racially diverse older Canadians. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among racially diverse adults aged 55 years and older across Canada using Computer-Assisted Web Interv

Disparities in prostate cancer screening, diagnoses, management, and outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous men in a universal health care system.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous Peoples have higher morbidity rates and lower life expectancies than non-Indigenous Canadians. Identification of disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous men regarding prostate cancer (PCa) screening, diagnoses, management, and outcomes was sought. METHODS: An observational cohort of men diagnosed with PCa between June 2014 and October 2022 was studied. Men were prospectively enrolled in the province-wide Alberta Prostate Cancer Research Initiative. The primary outcomes were tumor characteristics (stage, grade, and prostate-specific antigen [PSA]) at diagnosis.

Robust and prototypical immune responses toward influenza vaccines in the high-risk group of Indigenous Australians.

Morbidity and mortality rates from seasonal and pandemic influenza occur disproportionately in high-risk groups, including Indigenous people globally. Although vaccination against influenza is recommended for those most at risk, studies on immune responses elicited by seasonal vaccines in Indigenous populations are largely missing, with no data available for Indigenous Australians and only one report published on antibody responses in Indigenous Canadians. We recruited 78 Indigenous and 84 non-Indigenous Australians vaccinated with the quadrivalent influenza vaccine into the Looking into InFlu

Prevalence of psoriasis in indigenous communities around the world: a scoping review⋆.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition with systemic comorbidities and significant impacts on quality of life. Its prevalence in indigenous populations is poorly understood, limiting targeted health interventions. This scoping review aims to review the prevalence of psoriasis in indigenous communities globally, identify genetic, environmental, and socioeconomic influences, and explore barriers to accurate diagnosis and care. A search of PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Scopus identified 30 studies, of which 15 met inclusion criteria, encompassing 13 Indigenous populations acr
