Perspectives of Indigenous Peoples on Home Dialysis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Synthesis of Qualitative Studies.

KEY POINTS: Indigenous people value home dialysis as it minimizes the need for relocation while supporting autonomy, cultural connection, and community engagement. Qualitative studies highlight that barriers to home dialysis are largely systemic, structural, and culturally rooted. Community-centered and culturally informed approaches are consistently identified as key facilitators to home dialysis. BACKGROUND: Indigenous patients are less likely to be treated with home dialysis, including home hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, compared with non-Indigenous people. We conducted a systematic

Perspectives on Drug Treatment Among Indigenous Peoples in Recovery Residing in the Northern Midwest United States.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence-based drug treatment is a vital component of an effective response to substance use inequities in the United States (US). Unfortunately, many drug treatment models were developed in western contexts and may fail to account for Indigenous cultures and values. The experiences of Indigenous peoples in drug treatment programs have not been well studied, leading to a dearth of knowledge about factors that facilitate or impede recovery. We aim to explore perceptions about drug treatment and associated experiences among Indigenous peoples in recovery in the northern Midwest US. M

The Problem of Vitamin D Scarcity: Cultural and Genetic Solutions by Indigenous Arctic and Tropical Peoples.

Vitamin D metabolism differs among human populations because our species has adapted to different natural and cultural environments. Two environments are particularly difficult for the production of vitamin D by the skin: the Arctic, where the skin receives little solar UVB over the year; and the Tropics, where the skin is highly melanized and blocks UVB. In both cases, natural selection has favored the survival of those individuals who use vitamin D more efficiently or have some kind of workaround that ensures sufficient uptake of calcium and other essential minerals from food passing through

Different Rates of the SLC26A4-Related Hearing Loss in Two Indigenous Peoples of Southern Siberia (Russia).

Hereditary hearing loss (HL) is known to be highly locus/allelic heterogeneous, and the prevalence of different HL forms significantly varies among populations worldwide. Investigation of region-specific landscapes of hereditary HL is important for local healthcare and medical genetic services. Mutations in the SLC26A4 gene leading to nonsyndromic recessive deafness (DFNB4) and Pendred syndrome are common genetic causes of hereditary HL, at least in some Asian populations. We present for the first time the results of a thorough analysis of the SLC26A4 gene by Sanger sequencing in the large coh

Parasitological and molecular diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis among indigenous peoples in the state of Roraima, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: We diagnose cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) among indigenous peoples of the state of Roraima, Brazil, and discuss some aspects of its epidemiology. METHODS: Skin imprints, and lesion exudate samples collected on filter paper were examined using parasitological and molecular techniques, respectively. RESULTS: Of 30 indigenous individuals, representing several ethnic groups, with suspected cases of CL, 27 (90%) tested positive for Leishmania spp. by PCR, and 21 (70%) by parasitological microscopy. CONCLUSIONS: Cutaneous leishmaniasis is indistinctly present among indigenou

Indigenous peoples and inclusion in clinical and genomic research: Understanding the history and navigating contemporary engagement.

Despite significant improvements in pediatric cancer survival outcomes, there remain glaring disparities in under-represented racial and ethnic groups that warrant mitigation by the scientific and clinical community. To address and work towards eliminating such disparities, the Pacific Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium (PNOC) and Children's Brain Tumor Network (CBTN) established a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) working group in 2020. The DEI working group is dedicated to improving access to care for all pediatric patients with central nervous system (CNS) tumors, broadening diversity

Trauma and Substance Use among Indigenous Peoples of the United States and Canada: A Scoping Review.

Substance use has been identified by Indigenous populations as contributing to health disparities facing their communities. Rates of trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder are higher in Indigenous, compared to non-Indigenous, populations and have been linked to substance use. Historical trauma is thought to be one mechanism underlying substance use and related disorders. The purpose of the present study is to summarize the current state of the literature focusing on the association between trauma (historical and lived) and substance use among Indigenous populations in the United St

Correlates of Illicit Drug Use Among Indigenous Peoples in Canada: A Test of Social Support Theory.

Relying on a national stratified random sample of Indigenous peoples aged 19 years old and above in Canada, this study investigates the correlates of illicit drug use among Indigenous peoples, paying special attention to the association between social support measures and illegal drug use. Results from multivariate logistical regression show that measures of social support, such as residential mobility, strength of ties within communities, and lack of timely counseling, are statistically significant correlates of illicit drug use. Those identifying as Christian are significantly less likely to

Health Characteristics of the Wayuu Indigenous People.

INTRODUCTION: The identified number of isolated populations with unique medical characteristics is growing. These populations are difficult to study. Civil-military humanitarian operations are part of our medical force readiness training, and are also a venue through which unique populations can be simultaneously served and evaluated. Continuing Promise 2017 was a collaborative effort between the US Navy, non-governmental organizations, and the Colombian Ministry of Health, Navy and Army to provide primary medical care to the Wayuu indigenous people in the La Guajira Department of Colombia. Mortality trends and disparities in Brazil's indigenous peoples: a comprehensive ecological time-series study spanning 2010-2022.

Mortality trends among Indigenous peoples in Brazil remain poorly characterised. An ecological time-series study (2010-2022) was conducted, comparing Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations using nationwide open-access demographic and mortality data. Mortality was stratified by sex, age, and ICD-10 groups, populations were compared using Pearson's chi-square test (p < 0.05), and trends were evaluated with joinpoint regression (JR) to estimate Average Annual Percentage Changes (AAPCs). Between 2010 and 2022, mortality among Indigenous peoples increased by 82.5% (from 2,927 to 5,343), compared

The role of chronic disease in the disparity of influenza incidence and severity between indigenous and non-indigenous Australian peoples during the 2009 influenza pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic (influenza A(H1N1)pdm09) disproportionately impacted Indigenous peoples. Indigenous Australians are also affected by a health gap in chronic disease prevalence. We hypothesised that the disparity in influenza incidence and severity was accounted for by higher chronic disease prevalence. METHODS: We analysed influenza data from Western Australia, South Australia, the Northern Territory, and Queensland. We calculated population prevalence of chronic diseases in Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian populations using nationally-collected health sur

Exploring Human-Wildlife Coexistence Through the Lens of Value Pluralism Among Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs).

A nuanced understanding of human-wildlife coexistence (HW-coexistence) is necessary to develop effective conservation approaches that are socially just and culturally sensitive. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) are central to such efforts, given their diverse perspectives and values regarding interacting with wildlife. This paper focuses on understanding how pluralistic values of IPLCs can inform more nuanced perspectives of human-wildlife coexistence. Through a critical interpretive synthesis (CIS), we showed how the value pluralism of IPLCs begets and enriches the complexitie
