Feeding frozen complementary foods promotes food acceptance in infants: The randomized intervention trial Baby Gourmet.

Infancy may represent a sensitive window for establishing food preferences that could affect the individual's long-term potential to establish healthy eating patterns. Our study was based on the hypothesis that preserving the natural flavor of the ingredients of commercially prepared complementary foods would increase the acceptance of new foods, especially vegetables. Frozen vegetable-based meals for infants were developed to preserve the natural taste of the ingredients better than sterilization of meals in jars. In a 3-month randomized, controlled intervention study, 51 infants were fed eit

Maternally reported food allergies and other food-related health problems in infants: characteristics and associated factors.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to identify the frequency, demographics, and diagnostic characteristics associated with maternally reported food allergies and other food-related health problems among infants aged < or = 1 year. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2005-2007 Infant Feeding Practices Study II, a longitudinal survey of 2441 US mothers of healthy singletons from pregnancy through their infant's first year. Doctor diagnosis and symptoms-based criteria were used to identify a probable-food-allergic group from maternal reports of infant health problems with food. RESULTS: More than one fifth

Cow's milk protein allergy and other food hypersensitivities in infants.

Food hypersensitivity (FHS) is the umbrella term used to describe both food allergy, which involves the immune system, and food intolerances, which do not. It is therefore important that the diagnosis is made by a specialist health care professional such as a paediatrician or allergist. Some experienced dietitians and health visitors may be able to assist in making a diagnosis. The diagnostic work-up includes a medical history and blood tests/skin tests (where applicable). A food and symptom diary followed by a special test diet to identify the foods causing the infant's symptoms may also be n

Skin care interventions in infants for preventing eczema and food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Eczema and food allergy are common health conditions that usually begin in early childhood and often occur in the same people. They can be associated with an impaired skin barrier in early infancy. It is unclear whether trying to prevent or reverse an impaired skin barrier soon after birth is effective for preventing eczema or food allergy. OBJECTIVES: Primary objective To assess the effects of skin care interventions such as emollients for primary prevention of eczema and food allergy in infants. Secondary objective To identify features of study populations such as age, hereditar

IgE food sensitization in infants with eczema attending a dermatology department.

OBJECTIVES: Because community-based studies, which report IgE food sensitization (IgE-FS) in more than 80% of infants with moderate atopic eczema, may be influenced by referral bias, we assessed the prevalence of IgE-FS in a cohort of infants with moderate atopic eczema attending a dermatology department clinic. STUDY DESIGN: Consecutive infants (n = 51, 39 males; median age, 34 weeks; range, 20 to 51 weeks) with moderate atopic eczema referred to a university-affiliated dermatology department were studied prospectively. Clinical history and eczema severity were documented. IgE-FS was assesse

Food mineral composition and acid-base balance in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Due to a transient age-related low renal capacity for net acid excretion, preterm infants fed formula are at a considerable risk of spontaneously developing incipient late metabolic acidosis, clinically characterized by e.g., disturbed bone mineralization and impaired growth. AIM OF THE STUDY: From acid-base data in blood and urine under different diets of modified human milk or preterm formulas is attempted to explore the impact of food mineral (and protein) composition on renal regulation and systemic acid-base balance in preterm infants. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data were collect

[Basic principles of diet therapy in food allergy in young infants].

Altogether 101 infants aged 3 weeks to 1 year with exudative-catarrhal diathesis and apotic dermatitis were examined. Sensitization of the infants with different protein fractions of cow's milk and egg protein was studied by the passive hemagglutination test with the use of antigenic erythrocyte diagnostic agents. In the majority of exudative-catarrhal diathesis cases and in medium-severe apotic dermatitis, sensitization with 2-3 antigens was noted, while in severe atopic dermatitis, sensitization with 4-5 antigens was recorded in over 40% of cases. On the basis of the data obtained there have

Infant food production environments: A potential reservoir for vancomycin-resistant enterococci non-nosocomial infections.

Enterococcus has been considered one of the most important nosocomial pathogens for human infections, and the hospital environment is an important reservoir for vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) that leads to antimicrobial therapeutic failure. However, infant foods and their production environments could pose risks for the immature population, while this question remains unaddressed. This study conducted an extensive and thorough Enterococcus isolation, VRE risk assessment of the Chinese infant food production chains and additional online-marketing infant foods, including powdered infant

Infant Feeding and Weight Gain: Separating Breast Milk From Breastfeeding and Formula From Food.

OBJECTIVES: Studies addressing breastfeeding and obesity rarely document the method of breast milk feeding, type of supplementation, or feeding in hospital. We investigated these practices in the CHILD birth cohort. METHODS: Feeding was reported by mothers and documented from hospital records. Weight and BMI z scores (BMIzs) were measured at 12 months. Analyses controlled for maternal BMI and other confounders. RESULTS: Among 2553 mother-infant dyads, 97% initiated breastfeeding, and the median breastfeeding duration was 11.0 months. Most infants (74%) received solids before 6 months. Among

'It's not just about food': mother-infant interaction and the wider context of nutrition.

In recent years, attention has increasingly focused on the wider context of nutrition, rather than simply on calorie and nutrient intake. Recent estimates put the figure of people in the world living in extreme poverty (an income of less than $1 a day) at 1.1 billion. This has significant implications for nutritional deficiencies in infants and young children. In this paper, we will show how the physical growth and psychological development of infants and children are intimately linked, and how many of the same aetiological factors (such as caregiver sensitivity, psychosocial support, communic

Foodborne botulism in a six-month-old infant caused by home-canned baby food.

Previously reported cases of botulism in infants have been diagnosed as infant botulism; that is, botulism caused by intestinal colonization by Clostridium botulinum with intraluminal production and absorption of toxin. Foodborne botulism is caused by ingestion of preformed toxin. We describe an unusual case of foodborne botulism in a 6-month-old infant caused by the ingestion of improperly prepared home-canned baby food. This represents the youngest age of onset for foodborne botulism in the United States of which we are aware and illustrates the need to rule out foodborne botulism, which rep

A household-level sweet potato-based infant food to complement vitamin A supplementation initiatives.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) prevalence in Sub-Saharan Africa is high in spite of vitamin A supplementation programmes among children in most countries. Plant-based complementary foods remain the key source of nutrients in addition to breast milk for infants in lower income countries. Cereal-legume blends are superior in protein and energy densities compared with maize, millet or sorghum-only porridge. However, unfortified cereal-legume and cereal-only porridges are low in vitamin A. A household-level sweet potato-based infant food, rich in vitamin A, has been developed to complement vitamin A s

Rheological Behaviors of Thickened Infant Formula Prepared with Xanthan Gum-Based Food Thickeners for Dysphagic Infants.

Thickened infant formula (TIF) prepared with commercial xanthan gum (XG)-based food thickeners are commonly used to care for infants with swallowing difficulties or regurgitation. In this study, the rheological properties of TIF prepared with four commercial food thickeners (coded A-D) were determined as a function of thickener concentration, thickener type, and setting time because the selection of an appropriate food thickener for TIF preparation is necessary for managing dysphagia in infants. The flow and dynamic rheological properties of TIF were investigated at three different concentrati

Orange-fleshed sweet potato-based infant food is a better source of dietary vitamin A than a maize-legume blend as complementary food.

BACKGROUND: White maize, which is widely used for complementary feeding and is seldom fortified at the household level, may be associated with the high prevalence of vitamin A deficiency among infants in low-income countries. OBJECTIVE: The nutrient composition of complementary foods based on orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) and cream-fleshed sweet potato (CFSP), maize-soybean-groundnut (Weanimix), and a proprietary wheat-based infant cereal (Nestlé Cerelac) were assessed using the Codex Standard (CODEX STAN 074-1981, Rev. 1-2006) specification as a reference. Additionally, the costs of OFS

Food Protein-induced Enterocolitis Syndrome Due to Rice in a Japanese Infant: A Case Report.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated gastrointestinal food allergy characterized by repetitive vomiting within 1-4 h and/or diarrhea within 24 h after ingesting the causative food. We herein report a rare Japanese case of rice-induced FPIES. A six-month-old, female, Japanese patient presented to the emergency room (ER) with the complaint of vomiting after feeding. Postprandial vomiting had occurred occasionally since she started ingesting solid food at the age of 5 months. Rice-induced FPIES was suspected only after the fourth ER visit based on the characte
