Polygonatum sibiricum Extract Inactivates Cronobacter sakazakii Isolated from Powdered Infant Formula.

This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial activity and mechanism of Polygonum sibiricum extract (PSE) against Cronobacter sakazakii (C. sakazakii) isolated from powdered infant formula (PIF). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and growth curves were measured to evaluate the antibacterial effects. The antibacterial mechanism was elucidated by revealing the changes in cell membrane potential, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, cell membrane permeability, protein and nucleic acid leakage, and cell morphology of C. sakazaki

Phenylalanine-Free Infant Formula in Patients with Phenylketonuria: A Retrospective Study.

The long-term efficacy and use of phenylalanine-free infant amino acid formula (PFIF) is understudied. This retrospective, longitudinal study evaluated PFIF (PKU Start: Vitaflo International) in children with phenylketonuria, collecting data on metabolic control, growth, dietary intake, and symptoms and the child's experience with PFIF. Twenty-five children (12 males, 48%) with a median age of 3.6 years (2.0-6.2 years) were included. During 24 months follow-up, children maintained normal growth and satisfactory metabolic control. The protein intake from protein substitutes increased from 2.7 a

Thiamine-deficient infant formula: what happened and what have we learned?

INTRODUCTION: In 2003, a thiamine-deficient soy infant formula was produced in Germany and marketed exclusively in Israel. Between October and November 2003, infants with encephalopathy were admitted to several intensive care units in Israel and were later diagnosed as suffering from thiamine deficiency. The soy formula consumed by these children was found to be the cause of these admissions. METHODS: A Medline search using the terms 'thiamine deficiency' and 'formula' or 'feeding' without year limit identified relevant published data on that event. Newspapers from Israel were screened from N

Thermal resistance of Francisella tularensis in infant formula and fruit juices.

Francisella tularensis is a gram-negative bacterium that can cause gastrointestinal or oropharyngeal tularemia from ingestion of contaminated food or water. Despite the potential for accidental or intentional contamination of foods with F. tularensis, little information exists on the thermal stability of this organism in food matrices. In the present study, the thermal resistance of the live vaccine strain of F. tularensis in four food products (liquid infant formula, apple juice, mango juice, and orange juice) was investigated. D-values ranged from 12 s (57.5 degrees C) to 580 s (50 degrees C

Gamma radiation sensitivity of Enterobacter sakazakii in dehydrated powdered infant formula.

The observed Enterobacter sakazakii D10-values for tryptic soy broth and dehydrated powdered infant formula were 0.27 +/- 0.05 and 0.76 +/- 0.08 kGy, respectively. A decrease of approximately 3 log in the dehydrated powdered infant formula was obtained by irradiation with 3.0 kGy or rehydration with hot water at 80 degrees C. No recoverable bacteria were found in the powdered infant formula irradiated at 5.0 kGy and stored, either before or after rehydration. A radiation dose of up to 5.0 kGy had no marked effect on the sensory properties of the dehydrated powdered infant formula after rehydra

A generally neglected threat in infant nutrition: incorrect preparation of infant formulae.

Breast milk is the most appropriate food for infants. At least 4-6 months of breast feeding is sufficient for all babies if appropriate growth is monitored monthly. However, for those infants unable to breast-feed sufficiently or at all, formula can be given as an alternative. However, serious health problems such as hypernatremic dehydration, malnutrition, and obesity may develop if powdered formula is not appropriately prepared. In the present study, our aim was to investigate whether or not mothers of formula-fed babies in Ozkanlar (Izmir, Turkey) district prepared powdered infant formula a

Detection and characterization of Clostridium botulinum isolated from powdered infant formula.

INTRODUCTION: As a part of an ongoing investigation of the 2025 multistate outbreak of infant botulism linked to consumption of powdered infant formula (PIF), various samples - including unopened containers of PIF and base powder (bulk PIF before packaging) - were analyzed for the presence of Clostridium botulinum. METHODS: Samples were screened using a tiered analytical approach: anaerobic enrichment followed by real-time PCR targeting botulinum neurotoxin-associated genes, confirmatory PCR, amplicon sequencing, colony isolation, and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). C. botulinum was detected i

Preterm formula use in the preterm very low birth weight infant.

Whereas human milk is the recommended diet for all infants, preterm formulas are indicated for enteral feeding of preterm very low birth weight infants when sufficient maternal breast milk and donor human milk are not available. Feeding with preterm formulas helps to ensure consistent delivery of nutrients. The balance of risks and benefits of feeding preterm formulas versus supplemented maternal and donor breast milk for preterm infants, however, is uncertain. Numerous studies and extensive practice have shown improved growth with preterm formulas, but there is concern for increased risks of

Survival of Salmonella Typhi and Shigella dysenteriae in dehydrated infant formula.

UNLABELLED: Powdered infant formula has previously been linked to the transmission of various bacterial pathogens in infants resulting in life-threatening disease and death. Survival studies of 2 common foodborne pathogens, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Shigella dysenteriae, in powdered infant formula have not been previously studied despite the potentially devastating consequences from ingestion of these organisms, particularly by newborns, in case of a natural or deliberate contamination event. Therefore, to better predict the risk of S. Typhi and S. dysenteriae infection from consum

Hypernatremic dehydration due to concentrated infant formula: report of two cases.

Hypernatremic dehydration is a rare but serious clinical condition in newborns and small infants. It is usually caused by diarrhea, improperly prepared infant formula, decreased fluid intake, or exclusive breastfeeding. Symptoms are usually masked until neurological symptoms occur. We report two infants who presented with fever and hypernatremic dehydration caused by concentrating infant formula to alleviate symptoms of constipation, and careless formula preparation due to confusion over spoon sizes, respectively. In the first case, status epilepticus occurred during early treatment, despite c

Enterobacteriaceae in dehydrated powdered infant formula manufactured in Indonesia and Malaysia.

To determine the occurrence of Salmonella and Shigella in infant formula from Southeast Asia, 74 packages of dehydrated powdered infant follow-on formula (recommended age, > 4 months) from five different manufacturers, four from Indonesia and one from Malaysia, were analyzed. None of the 25-g test portions yielded Salmonella or Shigella. However, further identification of colonies growing on selective media used for Salmonella and Shigella detection revealed the frequent occurrence of several other Enterobacteriaceae species. A total of 35 samples (47%) were positive for Enterobacteriaceae. Te

Infant formula as a cause of aluminium toxicity in neonatal uraemia.

Aluminium toxicity occurred in two infants with congenital uraemia who had never received phosphate binders or other aluminium-containing agents or intravenous fluids. One patient was treated by peritoneal dialysis from the age of two weeks and died at three months after the sudden onset of neurological symptoms; the other died after one month of conservative management without dialysis. Brain aluminium concentration was high in both infants (6.4 and 47 micrograms/g, respectively) whereas bone aluminium content was normal and there were no histological changes or stainable aluminium on bone bi

Updating [Nutritional composition dataset of approved infant formula powder in China (2017-2024)] with [Nutritional composition dataset of approved older infant formula powder in China (2017-2024)].

Older infant formula powder, which can meet some of the nutritional needs of infants aged 6 to 12 months, is suitable for normal older infants. In this context, China has established a stringent registration-based regulatory system for infant formula products, requiring mandatory pre-market approval and comprehensive evaluation of all formulations before commercialization. The primary objective of this dataset was the comparative profiling of nutrient content in domestic and imported older infant formula products. The complete registration dossiers of 786 older infant formula powder from 2017

Detection of various microplastics in placentas, meconium, infant feces, breastmilk and infant formula: A pilot prospective study.

Pregnancy and infancy are sensitive windows for environmental exposures. However, no study has investigated the presence of microplastics (MPs) in mother-infant pairs, and the exposure sources. Therefore, we aim to assess MPs exposure in placenta, meconium, infant feces, breast milk and infant formula samples, and assess the potential sources of pregnancy and lactational exposure to MPs. A total of 18 mother-infant pairs were recruited, and placentas and meconium samples were collected. Infant feces, breast milk and infant formula samples were collected at 6 months of age. We also collected da

Nutrient-enriched formula versus standard term formula for preterm infants following hospital discharge.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants are often growth-restricted at hospital discharge. Feeding infants after hospital discharge with nutrient-enriched formula rather than standard term formula might facilitate "catch-up" growth and improve development. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of feeding nutrient-enriched formula compared with standard term formula on growth and development for preterm infants following hospital discharge. SEARCH METHODS: We used the standard search strategy of the Cochrane Neonatal Review Group. This included searches of the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials
