Infant health consequences of childbearing by teenagers and older mothers.

The association of childbearing at early and late ages with various adverse outcomes of pregnancy was explored in data collected in the 1980 National Natality and Fetal Mortality Surveys. The characteristics of interest for teenage mothers were marital status at conception and the trimester of pregnancy in which prenatal care was begun. For married mothers aged 30 years and older, the variables considered were employment status and occupation during the year preceding childbirth and smoking status before and during pregnancy. The pregnancy outcome variables analyzed were the same for both grou

New Beginnings: The NOx Budget Trading Program and Infant Health.

This paper examines the impacts of the Nitrogen Oxide Budget Program (NBP), a program that created a cap-and-trade market to regulate ozone pollution, on infant health outcomes. I employ the universe of birth records in the US from 1995 to 2008 and estimate how in-utero exposure to the NBP affected infant health using a triple-differences strategy. I find that exposure to the NBP improved infant health. Full exposure to the NBP reduces the incidence of low birth weight and very preterm birth by about 5.5% and 13%, respectively. Heterogeneity analyses suggest larger effects among Black mothers,

Infant Feeding Pattern Clusters Are Associated with Childhood Health Outcomes.

(1) Background: Feeding behavior habits have a pattern with a certain tendency during infancy. We aimed to identify the associations between feeding patterns in infancy and the subsequent 10-year childhood disease burden. (2) Methods: Data from 236,372 infants were obtained from the national health insurance and screening program records in South Korea. Parent-administered questionnaires during infancy provided details on the feeding type and types/frequency of complementary food for analyzing feeding patterns. The outcomes were all-cause hospitalization and the development of 15 representativ

How reliable is parental/carer assessment of infant health status?

Problems often arise in cases of lethal inflicted injury in infants and children in determining the chronology of events. However, on occasion it may be assumed that a parent's statement that the child appeared normal at a particular time is correct. It is then inferred that the lethal injury occurred after this time. In a study of infants from Queensland, Australia a significant number of cases occurred where a parent/carer did not actually recognise that an infant was deceased or in extremis despite handling of the infants, some of whom had established rigor mortis. Assessment of their infan

Association Between Exclusive Breastfeeding and Infant Health Outcomes in Pakistan.

PURPOSE: The infant mortality rate in Pakistan is one of the highest in the world with most cases attributed to diarrheal or respiratory diseases. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life is recommended by the World Health Organization to achieve optimal growth and health, however, in Pakistan the rate of exclusive breastfeeding by mothers is <40%. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of exclusive breastfeeding, diarrhea, acute respiratory infections and fever among infants under the age of 6 months. DESIGN AND METHODS: The cross-sectional study analyzed sec

The very low birth weight infant microbiome and childhood health.

This review describes current understandings about the nature of the very low birth weight infant (VLBW) gut microbiome. VLBW infants often experience disruptive pregnancies and births, and prenatal factors can influence the maturity of the gut and immune system, and disturb microbial balance and succession. Many VLBWs experience rapid vaginal or Caesarean births. After birth these infants often have delays in enteral feeding, and many receive little or no mother's own milk. Furthermore the stressors of neonatal life in the hospital environment, common use of antibiotics, invasive procedures a

Infant health and neurodevelopmental outcomes following prenatal exposure to duloxetine.

Maternal psychiatric disorders can have negative consequences on the fetus and newborn. Thus, the risks of untreated mental disorders in pregnancy should be balanced against the potential risks of a psychopharmacological treatment. The aim of the present report is to provide information on the infant safety of duloxetine exposure, an antidepressant drug belonging to the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, during pregnancy. Despite duloxetine being routinely prescribed as a treatment for major depression and anxiety disorders, there is a paucity of literature evaluating both the short

Breastfeeding and maternal and infant health outcomes in developed countries.

OBJECTIVES: We reviewed the evidence on the effects of breastfeeding on short- and long-term infant and maternal health outcomes in developed countries. DATA SOURCES: We searched MEDLINE(R), CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library in November of 2005. Supplemental searches on selected outcomes were searched through May of 2006. We also identified additional studies in bibliographies of selected reviews and by suggestions from technical experts. REVIEW METHODS: We included systematic reviews/meta-analyses, randomized and non-randomized comparative trials, prospective cohort, and case-control studies

Infant health care utilization predicted by pattern of prenatal care.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between patterns of prenatal care and subsequent infant health care use in a sample of inner-city women and their infants. In testing this relationship we controlled for several sociodemographic, economic, and psychological factors. DESIGN: This case-control study examined medical records of 148 infants born to mothers previously enrolled in a 9-month study of prenatal care and use or nonuse of illicit drugs. Cases (N = 62) were defined as infants born to women who first registered for prenatal care after 28 weeks' g

A One Health Decalogue for Breastfeeding: Microbiota-Targeted Strategies for Infant Gastrointestinal and Neurodevelopmental Health.

Background/Objectives: Breastfeeding represents a critical developmental window during which maternal biology, environmental exposures, and nutrition converge to influence infant gastrointestinal health and long-term developmental trajectories. From a One Health perspective, breastfeeding can be conceptualized not as a static nutritional act, but as a dynamic and modifiable biological system in which maternal factors shape early-life microbiota assembly and immune programming. This narrative review explores how microbiota-oriented strategies during breastfeeding may foster a favorable trajecto

Improved mental health for women receiving infant mental health home visiting: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates the impact of a home-based infant mental health intervention on maternal mental health symptoms. Prevalence rates of maternal depression, anxiety and trauma symptoms are quite high during the postpartum period and can contribute to ruptures in the parent-child relationship and infant development. While some infant mental health interventions improve depression, less is known about the impact of home-based or attachment-based psychotherapeutic interventions on maternal anxiety or post traumatic stress disorder. METHOD: Using a randomized controlled trial desi

Sequelae of infant colic: evidence of transient infant distress and absence of lasting effects on maternal mental health.

BACKGROUND: Colic is widely believed to remit by 3 months of age, with little lasting effect on the infant or the family. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of colic at 3 months and the proportion of cases of colic (identified at 6 weeks) that remitted by 3 months; to identify the factors predictive of colic's remission; and to explore the potential lasting effects of colic on maternal mental health. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study of 856 mother-infant dyads. Self-administered questionnaires were mailed to mothers at 1 and 6 weeks and 3 and 6 months post partum. Standardized instrument

The Department of Defense Birth and Infant Health Research Program: Characteristics of Live Births and Adverse Birth and Infant Health Outcomes Among TRICARE Beneficiaries, 2016-2021.

INTRODUCTION: The Department of Defense Birth and Infant Health Research (BIHR) program regularly identifies live births among TRICARE beneficiaries (i.e., United States military-connected families) for epidemiologic surveillance and research purposes. Linkage of infants with their TRICARE sponsor and birth mother (who may also be the sponsor) provides the capability to examine parental and military characteristics of births and associated health outcomes. The current study describes BIHR data methodology and presents population characteristics for a recent, 6-year cohort of live births among

First Dental Steps intervention: feasibility study of a health visitor led infant oral health improvement programme.

BACKGROUND: In England, dental caries is common (22.4% of 5-year-olds, 2024) and the primary reason for hospital admission of children. First Dental Steps (FDS), an intervention in South West England, includes training for health visitors, integrating oral health advice into home visits and provision of oral health packs (a free flow cup, toothbrush and 1450ppm fluoride toothpaste) to vulnerable families at the 1-year developmental check. The aim was to conduct a feasibility study of FDS to support parents to increase infant toothbrushing. METHODS: This study explored the feasibility and acce

Maternal health literacy as a potential determinant of infant and early childhood health: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Maternal health literacy (MHL) represents a potentially modifiable public health determinant concentrated among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. While 15-45% of pregnant women demonstrate inadequate health literacy, its impact across the full spectrum of infant and early childhood outcomes remains inadequately characterized, limiting understanding of its broader public health significance. OBJECTIVE: To systematically synthesize evidence on associations between MHL and infant/child health outcomes from birth through age three, and to examine whether MHL functions as a

Infant health effects of a nurse-community health worker home visitation programme: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Home visiting is supported as a way to improve child health and development. Home visiting has been usually provided by nurses or community health workers (CHWs). Few studies compared the child health advantages of a nurse-CHW team approach over nurse prenatal and postnatal home visiting. METHODS: A randomized trial was conducted with Medicaid-insured pregnant women in Kent County, Michigan. Pregnant women were assigned to a team intervention including nurse-CHW home visitation, or standard community care (CC) including nurse home visitation. Morbidity was assessed in 530 infants
