OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and correlates of the self-perception of infertility among female adolescents.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey.
SETTING: Urban adolescent clinic in a neighborhood health center in Denver, Colo.
PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred sexually active, nulliparous, 14- through 18-year-old female adolescents.
MEASUREMENTS/MAIN RESULTS: Concerns about fertility were expressed by 43 (21.5%) of the 200 respondents. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the factors most strongly associated with the self-perception of infertility were as follows (odds ratios; 95% confi

A prospective study was undertaken to determine the incidence of hyperprolactinemia in a group of referred infertile women, and to determine the association with (a) abnormal menstrual function and (b) presence or absence of galactorrhea. Of 113 referred infertile patients, 22 (19.5%) had elevated levels of serum prolactin. Five (4.4%) patients with hyperprolactinemia had neither abnormal menstrual function nor galactorrhea. This study demonstrates that hyperprolactinemia is a common finding in an infertile population, more so when galactorrhea and/or menstrual dysfunction is also present.

Female infertility is a multifactorial condition with complex biological and clinical underpinnings. Biologically, female-related infertility may stem from disruptions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, impaired folliculogenesis, oocyte maturation defects, uterine abnormalities, endometrial dysfunction, and fallopian tube abnormalities. This review highlights key genetic mechanisms contributing to reproductive dysfunction and their relevance to diagnosis and treatment. Chromosomal abnormalities, including Turner syndrome and X-autosome translocations, also contribute to infertil

This review provides a comprehensive overview of the genetic factors underlying male and female infertility. Infertility affects an estimated one in six couples worldwide, with both male and female factors contributing equally to its prevalence. Approximately, 50% of infertility cases are attributed to genetic causes. We explore three main categories of genetic causes: chromosomal abnormalities, monogenic disorders, and syndromic conditions. Chromosomal causes, including numerical and structural aberrations, are discussed with a focus on their impact on gametogenesis and reproductive outcomes.

Human reproduction is a complex process involving gamete maturation, fertilization, embryo cleavage and development, blastocyst formation, implantation, and live birth. If any of these processes are abnormal or arrest, reproductive failure will occur. Infertility is a state of reproductive dysfunction caused by various factors. Advances in molecular genetics, including cell and molecular genetics, and high-throughput sequencing technologies, have found that genetic factors are important causes of infertility. Genetic variants have been identified in infertile women or men and can cause gamete

This review is intended to serve as an aid in decision-making and patient counseling for the reproductive urologist when female factor infertility is found concurrently with male factor infertility. This review pairs the pathophysiology of female infertility with its implications for the treatment of male infertility, which most commonly includes ovulatory disorders, tubal abnormalities, and uterine abnormalities. By gaining a deeper understanding of these factors, reproductive urologists can employ a tailored approach to managing male factor infertility, taking into account the female partner

The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is a cAMP-activated trans-membrane ATP gated anion channel present in most epithelia, which transports chloride and bicarbonate ions across the apical membrane. Mutations in the CFTR protein are known to result in defective expression or function, notably the inhibition of chloride and bicarbonate transport. This can result in cystic fibrosis (CF), a disorder characterised by thickness of the mucus lining of the epithelial cells of the alimentary and respiratory tracts, sweat ducts and reproductive organs. As a consequence, there i

In recent years, the introduction of advanced technologies has led to a new scientific revolution: the discovery of the human microbiota. Next-generation sequencing allowed the identification of microbial communities in all districts of the human body and, among these, 9% are distributed in the genitourinary system. The microbiota plays a key role in controlling the homeostasis, therefore dysbiosis can lead to an alteration of the physiological state of health. An alteration of female reproductive microbial communities may affect fertility due to an alteration of the vaginal and endometrial ec

Autoimmune estrogen dermatitis is a cyclical cutaneous eruption that occurs premenstrually and goes to the rapid resolution within a few days of menstrual cycles. The disorder has variable clinical manifestations consisting of macules, papules, vesicles, urticarial lesions, bullae, eczematous plaques, and erythema multiforme-like lesions. Herein, we present a case of a 30-year-old woman with attacks of edema and erosions involving the oral and genital mucosal sites on every first day of her menstruation period. She had also multiple endocrinological problems such as hypotroidism and infertilit

The main female anatomical causes of infertility include post-infectious tubal damage, endometriosis, and congenital/acquired uterine anomalies. Congenital (septate uterus) and acquired (myomas and synechiae) diseases of the uterus may lead to infertility, pregnancy loss, and other obstetric complications. Pelvic inflammatory disease represents the most common cause of tubal damage. Surgery still remains an important option for tubal factor infertility, with results in terms of reproductive outcome that compare favorably with those of in vitro fertilization. Endometriosis is a common gynecolog

Following a complete gynecologic--endocrinologic workup, 45 infertile women suffering from oligoamenorrhea (n = 27) or luteal insufficiency (n = 18) were treated with auricular acupuncture. Results were compared to those of 45 women who received hormone treatment. Both groups were matched for age, duration of infertility, body mass index, previous pregnancies, menstrual cycle and tubal patency. Women treated with acupuncture had 22 pregnancies, 11 after acupuncture, four spontaneously, and seven after appropriate medication. Women treated with hormones had 20 pregnancies, five spontaneously, a

One third of infertility cases are due to anatomical abnormalities of the female reproductive tract: endometrial polyps (33%), bilateral tubal blockage (12%), hydrosalpinx (7%), sub-mucosal fibroids (3%) and pelvic endometriosis. These may need surgical correction which could restore fertility. This review aim to determine which examinations should be performed first. Hysterosalpingography shows sensitivity of only 65% but it increases the achievement of spontaneous pregnancy by three times. Office hysteroscopy has an excellent sensitivity (>95%) for diagnosing intra-uterine lesions. Pelvic ul

Although a critical mass of adipose tissue is essential for the normal development of female reproductive function, obesity has been shown to produce menstrual disturbances and subfertility. The severity of obesity and the distribution of fat tissue are important factors that influence the female reproductive system. The pathogenetic mechanistic links between them aren't clearly elucidated. Obese women, especially those with upper body obesity, have insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia, hyperandrogenaemia, increased peripheral aromatization of androgens to oestrogens, altered gonadotrophin

A total of 280 patients, 240 infertile and 40 pregnant were subjected to thorough history taking, general and local examination for exclusion of organic lesion, laboratory investigations to exclude parasitic, bacterial and fungal infections. Sterile vaginal swab from the posterior fornix was taken, and examined by wet smear preparation, Giemsa staining and cultivation on C.P.L.M. medium for trichomoniasis infection. The mean age of the infertile group was 25.75+/-3.92, and of the control group was 21.6+/-2.38 (in years). The mean duration of infertility was 2.81+/-1.51 (years). Out of 240 infe

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has proved useful in evaluating various conditions associated with female infertility. With T2-weighted pulse sequences, uterine zonal anatomy can be clearly delineated, and with images obtained in a plane coronal and perpendicular to the long axis of the uterus, the external uterine contour can be evaluated. This latter capability allows the differentiation of a bicornuate uterus from a septate one, a distinction that has not been possible with hysterosalpingography and that enables improved treatment planning. MR imaging accurately demonstrates leiomyomas, pro
