Non-glandular findings on breast ultrasound. Part II: a pictorial review of chest wall lesions.

The breast ultrasound (US) field-of-view (FOV) includes glandular parenchyma as well as tissues located anterior to and posterior to it, up to pleural line. For that, it is possible to incidentally identify lesions unrelated to breast parenchyma during screening or diagnostic US; sometimes a palpable lump may be the reason of the imaging exam. Furthermore, abnormality related to chest wall are easier and more accurate detected after mastectomy. Hence, radiologists should know the US appearance of lesions which may develop from all tissues present in this region and displayed in the US FOV, wit

Cellular spindled histiocytic pseudotumor complicating mammary fat necrosis: a potential diagnostic pitfall.

Fat necrosis of the breast is a relatively common reactive/reparative process that may be either primary, often after trauma, or secondary to prior surgery or therapeutic irradiation. Mammary fat necrosis may closely mimic breast neoplasia, both clinically and radiographically, and is thus frequently biopsied. In the majority of cases fat necrosis in the breast shows classic morphologic features and is a straightforward diagnosis. However, over the past several years we have seen a number of more challenging cases of mammary fat necrosis complicated by a distinctive cellular, spindled prolifer

[A Case of Stage Ⅳ Lung Adenocarcinoma with Bilateral Breast Metastases Mimicking Inflammatory Breast Cancer].

Breast metastases from primary lung cancers with inflammatory breast cancer (IBC)-like features are rare. Here, we report a patient with bilateral breast metastases from an advanced lung adenocarcinoma that mimicked IBC. A 67-year-old woman was diagnosed with right middle lobe lung adenocarcinoma with pleural and peritoneal dissemination (cT2aN2M1c, cStage ⅣB) and received systemic therapy. Twenty-nine months later, skin erythema and edema appeared in both breasts, suggesting bilateral IBC. Core needle biopsies of both breasts revealed atypical carcinomas without intraductal or lobular in situ

Mesenteric neoplasms: CT appearances of primary and secondary tumors and differential diagnosis.

Computed tomography (CT) remains the optimal imaging modality for diagnosing tumors in the mesentery. Although primary neoplasms arising from the mesenchymal tissues of the mesentery are rare, the small bowel mesentery is a major avenue for the dissemination of tumor within the peritoneal cavity. Tumors spread to the mesentery by four major routes: (a) direct extension, commonly seen with carcinoid tumor of the small intestine as well as intraabdominal cancers such as pancreatic and colon cancer; (b) lymphatic dissemination of lymphoma and some epithelial malignancies; (c) hematogenic spread r

Increased Prevalence of Cancer in Adult Patients With Psoriasis in the United States: A Claims Based Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis (Ps) is a chronic inflammatory immune-mediated skin disease that has been identified as a risk factor for various conditions including neoplasms. OBJECTIVE: To compare prevalence of cancer between Ps and Ps-free patients. METHODS: Adult patients continuously enrolled for ≥12 months (≥1 month in 2014) were selected from a large United States (US) claims database (Q1:2010-Q4:2014) and classified as Ps patients (≥2 Ps diagnoses; International Classification of Diseases 9th Revision, [ICD-9] code: 696.1x) and Ps-free patients (no Ps diagnosis). Patients were exactly matched

Diffuse Dermal Angiomatosis of the Breast Clinically Mimicking Cellulitis and Inflammatory Breast Cancer.

A 40-year-old woman admitted for hyponatremia and anasarca due to decompensated cirrhosis after a recent steroid taper developed extremely painful cutaneous breast lesions clinically mimicking cellulitis and inflammatory breast cancer and was biopsy-diagnosed instead with diffuse dermal angiomatosis (DDA) of the breasts, a rare and painful disease that can be a diagnostic chameleon. This case highlights the importance of early surgical consultation and tissue biopsy to correctly diagnose the etiology of severely painful mastitis and prevent prolonged symptomology and repeated administrations o

Risk factors for inflammatory and non-inflammatory breast cancer in North Africa.

PURPOSE: Studies of the etiology of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), a rare but aggressive breast cancer, have been hampered by limited risk factor information. We extend previous studies by evaluating a broader range of risk factors. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2015, we conducted a case-control study of IBC at six centers in Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco; enrolled were 267 IBC cases and for comparison 274 non-IBC cases and 275 controls, both matched on age and geographic area to the IBC cases. We administered questionnaires and collected anthropometric measurements for all study subjects. We us

Co-existence of hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatic tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Many case reports describe tuberculosis (TB) co-existent with a malignant neoplasm. However, the neoplasm in most of these reports is lung or breast cancer, with only two cases of liver cancer concomitant with TB reported in the literature. Although both TB and cancer are very common diseases, little attention has been given to the pathophysiologic and practical implications of their co-existence. METHODS: Case report and literature review. CASE REPORT: A 73-year-old female patient with a history of hypertension and hepatitis C presented with abdominal pain of 2 mos duration. Lab

Reprogramming the Immune Landscape of Inflammatory Breast Cancer.

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is the most aggressive subtype of breast cancer, characterized by rapid progression, early metastasis, and profound therapeutic resistance. Despite advances in multimodal therapy, outcomes remain poor, emphasizing the need for novel treatment strategies. Increasing evidence reveals that IBC exhibits an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), driven by interactions among tumor cells and TME components that promote immune evasion through cytokine signaling loops, immune checkpoint overexpression, and formation of tumor emboli that shield cancer cells from

The place of radiotherapy in the treatment of inflammatory breast cancer: Practical questions and responses.

Inflammatory breast cancer represents a rare and aggressive form of locally advanced breast cancer with distinct biological characteristics requiring specialized treatment approaches. Despite its clinical importance, standardized radiotherapy guidelines for inflammatory breast cancer management remain limited, and these patients are often underrepresented in clinical trials. This review aims to provide some practical radiotherapy recommendations for inflammatory breast cancer by integrating data from prospective clinical trials, population studies, and emerging genomic insights. The purpose is

Massive Bilateral Breast Hypertrophy in Pregnancy Due to Gestational Gigantomastia: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Gestational gigantomastia is a very rare disorder characterised by massive, bilateral breast enlargement during pregnancy. Clinically, it is characterised by rapid breast enlargement associated with severe mastodynia, back and shoulder pain, and erythema of the skin. In its most severe forms, it can lead to ulceration, necrosis, haemorrhage, or septicaemia. The underlying pathophysiology is not completely understood, but is thought to be multifactorial, involving hormonal hypersensitivity and autoimmune mechanisms. Histopathological confirmation is necessary for definitive diagnosis because it

Primary Breast Angiosarcoma: Comparative Transcriptome Analysis.

Primary breast angiosarcoma, with de novo appearance and not associated with exposure to radiation or lymphedema, is a rare pathology representing less than 0.05% of the neoplasms related to this organ. The pathology is characterized by its aggressiveness, poor prognosis, and difficulties in its differential diagnosis. This article reports the case of a 55-year-old white woman with no family history of cancer, with a rapidly growing mass in the left mammary gland that ulcerates and bleeds. It is confirmed as primary breast angiosarcoma by immunostaining in the tumor tissue for CD31, CD34, and

Challenges and potential pitfalls in magnetic resonance imaging of more elusive breast carcinomas.

Breast cancer is a heterogeneous group of diseases caused by differences in the biological, clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of the different types of invasive carcinoma in the breast. The majority of invasive breast carcinomas are the invasive ductal or no special-type (NST) carcinomas. The rest of the invasive carcinomas are either nonductal carcinoma subtypes or special-type carcinomas, making up 20%-30% of all invasive carcinomas. The latter group comprises very different and distinctive types of cancer with imaging characteristics and challenges that are unique to each subtyp

Sclerosing polycystic adenosis of the buccal mucosa.

Sclerosing polycystic adenosis (SPA) is a rare lesion of salivary glands with a striking resemblance to fibrocystic disease of the breast. Most of the 47 reported cases have occurred within the parotid gland, with only a single case being described within the buccal mucosa. We report an additional case of SPA of the buccal mucosa. The exact nature of this entity is unknown, but has up until recently believed to be a pseudoneoplastic reactive and inflammatory sclerosing process. Even though SPA has satisfied the criteria for monoclonality, the debate as to whether SPA represents a true neoplasm

Intestinal occlusion due to Burkitt lymphoma: an unusual cause.

We present the case of a 37-year-old Caucasian woman, with no history of interest, who came to the emergency room for an occlusive condition of 24 hours' evolution. The patient reported a weight loss of 12 kg in the last month, as well as the appearance of a lump in the left breast in the last week. A chest-abdominal CT scan revealed multiple solid-appearing nodules in the left breast, a metastatic liver lesion, and a tumor-like mass in the right iliac fossa measuring 90x60 mm. A biopsy of the breast lesion revealed a diffuse architectural pattern with destruction of the parenchyma and irregul

Naringenin: A potential flavonoid phytochemical for cancer therapy.

Naringenin is an important phytochemical which belongs to the flavanone group of polyphenols, and is found mainly in citrus fruits like grapefruits and others such as tomatoes and cherries plus medicinal plants derived food. Available evidence demonstrates that naringenin, as herbal medicine, has important pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, and anti-cancer activities. Collected data from in vitro and in vivo studies show the inactivation of carcinogens after treatment with pure naringenin, naringenin-loaded nanoparticles, an

Immediate Breast Reconstruction for Inflammatory Breast Cancer: Trends in Use and Clinical Outcomes 2004-2016.

INTRODUCTION: National guidelines specify against immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) among inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) patients. However, limited data exist regarding this practice. We report practice patterns and oncologic outcomes among nonmetastatic IBC patients receiving trimodality therapy, with or without IBR. METHODS: Using the National Cancer Database, we identified nonmetastatic IBC patients treated with trimodality therapy from 2004 to 2016. Primary outcome was overall survival (OS), assessed on unadjusted analysis using Kaplan-Meier estimates and on adjusted analysis using

Neoplasms associated with paraneoplastic pemphigus: a review with emphasis on non-hematologic malignancy and oral mucosal manifestations.

The review included 163 cases of paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) reported between 1990 and 2003, including a new unique case of PNP associated with occult breast cancer and an ovarian cyst of borderline malignancy. Hematologic-related neoplasms or disorders were associated with 84% of the cases, with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (38.6%) as the most frequent, followed by chronic lymphocytic leukemia (18.4%) and Castleman's disease (18.4%). The non-hematologic neoplasms comprised 16% of all cases: epithelial origin-carcinoma (8.6%), mesenchymal origin-sarcoma (6.2%), and malignant melanoma (0.6%). Carcin
