Phylogenetic and Molecular Characteristics of An H3N8 Avian Influenza Virus Detected in Wild Birds - Beijing, China, September 2024.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: The H3N8 avian influenza virus (AIV) demonstrates considerable capacity for interspecies transmission and has been documented in multiple mammalian hosts, including equine and canine species. During 2022-2023, three laboratory-confirmed human infections with H3N8 were reported in China, heightening public health concerns about the zoonotic spillover potential of H3 subtype AIVs. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This study reports the isolation of a genetically reassorted, low-pathogenicity H3N8 avian influenza virus (AIV) from an islet in Niukouyu Wetlan

Research note: Molecular characteristics and genetic evolution of H1N1 avian influenza virus from wild birds in Shanghai, China.

The H1N1 influenza virus is a major pandemic and seasonal pathogen with a broad host range, posing a substantial threat to human health and underscoring the need for continuous surveillance. Wild birds, as natural reservoirs of avian influenza viruses (AIVs), carry H1N1 strains capable of reassorting with other influenza viruses, which can drive pandemic emergence. The global migration of wild birds facilitates the spread of these viruses, and their interactions with poultry increase the risk of cross-species transmission, further amplifying the public health threat. However, knowledge of H1N1

Serologic testing for avian influenza viruses in wild birds: comparison of two commercial competition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.

Serologic testing of wild birds for avian influenza virus (AIV) surveillance poses problems due to species differences and nonspecific inhibitors that may be present in sera of wild birds. Recently available competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) kits offer a new species-independent approach. In this study we compare two commercial competitive cELISAs, using a total of 184 serum and plasma samples from 23 species of wild birds belonging to 10 orders. Thirteen samples were from experimentally high pathogenicity AI and low pathogenicity AI infected red-legged partridges (Alectori

Influenza A viruses in birds and humans: Prevalence, molecular characterization, zoonotic significance and risk factors' assessment in poultry farms.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of influenza A viruses in birds and humans residing in the same localities of Sharkia Province, Egypt and the risk factors' assessment in poultry farms. A total of 100 birds comprised of 50 chickens, 25 ducks and 25 wild egrets were sampled. Swab samples were collected from 65 people (50 poultry farm workers and 15 hospitalized patients). All samples were screened for the presence of influenza A viruses using isolation and molecular assays. Avian influenza viruses were only detected in chicken samples (18%) and molecularly confirmed as subtype H5.

H5N8 Subtype avian influenza virus isolated from migratory birds emerging in Eastern China possessed a high pathogenicity in mammals.

Novel H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) bearing the clade 2.3.4.4b HA gene have been widely spread through wild migratory birds since 2020. One H5N8 HPAIV (A/Wild bird/Cixi/Cixi02/2020; here after Cixi02) was isolated from migratory birds in Zhejiang Province, Eastern China in 25 November 2020. However, its pathogenicity in avian and mammal remains unknown. Hemagglutinin gene genetic analysis indicated that Cixi02 virus belonged to the branch II of H5 clade 2.3.4.4b originated from Iraq in May 2020. Cixi02 virus showed a binding affinity to both SA α-2, 3-galactose (Gal)

A Multi-Reassortant H3N8 Avian Influenza Virus Derived From Migratory Birds in Eastern China Exhibits Cross-Species Transmission Potential.

Migratory birds are one of the main reservoirs and long-distance transmission vectors of avian influenza viruses (AIVs). A migratory-bird-origin H3N8 subtype AIV (A/wild bird/Huadong/sy17/2024, hereafter named as WD/HDsy17/24) was isolated and identified in Jiangsu Province, Eastern China, in 2024. However, few studies have been conducted on the cross-species transmission potential of H3N8 AIVs from migratory birds. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the eight gene segments of WD/HDsy17/24 originated from different subtypes of AIV such as H3N8, H1, H5N1, H5N2, and H7N7 and was a multirecombi

Global spatial risk pattern of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus in wild birds: A knowledge-fusion based approach.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 viruses have continuously circulated throughout much of the world since 2003, resulting in huge economic losses and major public health problems. Wild birds have played an important role in the spread of H5N1 HPAI. To understand its spatial distribution, H5N1 HPAI have been studied by many disciplines from different perspectives, but only one kind of disciplinary knowledge was involved, which has provided limited progress in understanding. Combining risk information from different disciplines based on knowledge fusion can provide more accurate and

Reaction-advection-diffusion model of highly pathogenic avian influenza with behavior of migratory wild birds.

Wild birds are one of the main natural reservoirs for avian influenza viruses, and their migratory behavior significantly influences the transmission of avian influenza. To better describe the migratory behavior of wild birds, a system of reaction-advection-diffusion equations is developed to characterize the interactions among wild birds, poultry, and humans. By the next-generation operator, the basic reproduction number of the model is formulated. Then the threshold dynamic of the model is explored by some techniques including the theory of uniform persistence, internally chain transitive se

Targeted genomic sequencing of avian influenza viruses in wetland sediment from wild bird habitats.

Diverse influenza A viruses (IAVs) circulate in wild birds, including highly pathogenic strains that infect poultry and humans. Consequently, surveillance of IAVs in wild birds is a cornerstone of agricultural biosecurity and pandemic preparedness. Surveillance is traditionally done by testing wild birds directly, but obtaining these specimens is labor intensive, detection rates can be low, and sampling is often biased toward certain avian species. As a result, local incursions of dangerous IAVs are rarely detected before outbreaks begin. Testing environmental specimens from wild bird habitats

Aerosol exposure of live bird market workers to viable influenza A/H5N1 and A/H9N2 viruses, Cambodia.

Live bird markets (LBMs) have been identified as key factors in the spread, persistence and evolution of avian influenza viruses (AIVs). In addition, these settings have been associated with human infections with AIVs of pandemic concern. Exposure to aerosolised AIVs by workers in a Cambodian LBM was assessed using aerosol impact samplers. LBM vendors were asked to wear an air sampler for 30 min per day for 1 week while continuing their usual activities in the LBM during a period of high AIV circulation (February) and a period of low circulation (May). During the period of high circulation, AI

Pathogenesis and Phylogenetic Analyses of Two Avian Influenza H7N1 Viruses Isolated from Wild Birds.

The emergence of human infections with a novel H7N9 influenza strain has raised global concerns about a potential human pandemic. To further understand the character of other influenza viruses of the H7 subtype, we selected two H7N1 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) isolated from wild birds during routine surveillance in China: A/Baer's Pochard/Hunan/414/2010 (BP/HuN/414/10) (H7N1) and A/Common Pochard/Xianghai/420/2010 (CP/XH/420/10) (H7N1). To better understand the molecular characteristics of these two isolated H7N1 viruses, we sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed their entire genomes. The

[Infection of pigs with influenza A/H4 and A/H5 viruses isolated from wild birds on the territory of Russia].

Pigs were intranasally infected with avian influenza A/H5 (H5N1, H5N3) and A/H4 (H4N6, H4N8) viruses in mono- and coinfection. Infection with both apathogenic and pathogenic strains caused no clinical manifestations. A virus and/or fragments of its genome retained in nasopharyngeal fluid as long as 6-8 days after infection. During monoinfection, the structure of the hemagglutinin (HA) receptor site of isolates from the pigs infected with A/H5N1 strains (A/chicken/Kurgan/3/2005, A/duck/Russia/5354-vac/2005) and A/H5N3 (A/duck/Primorje/2633/01) remained unchanged during 6-7 days. Novel host factors associated with resistance to highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds inferred from primary cell culture.

Bird species differ in the sensitivity to the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV). Here, we infected fibroblasts from 11 bird species with the H5N1 HPAIV strain A/chicken/Yamaguchi/7/2004. These species were categorized into three groups based on previous studies: HPAI-resistant (rock pigeon, hooded crane, white-necked crane, and Japanese crane), HPAI- susceptible (chicken, mountain hawk-eagle, northern goshawk, peregrine falcon, and golden eagle), and those with unknown susceptibility to HPAI (Okinawa rail and Japanese white stork). We performed gene expression analysis to identif

Genetic diversity and pathogenic potential of low pathogenic H7 avian influenza viruses isolated from wild migratory birds in Korea.

To detect the circulation of H7 avian influenza viruses, we characterized H7 viruses found in migratory birds and live poultry markets of South Korea from 2005 to 2014. Phylogenic analysis revealed that while all viruses clustered into the Eurasian-lineage of H7 avian viruses, at least 12 distinct genotypes were represented. Most H7 viruses contained at least one gene segment from the highly-pathogenic A/Sck/Hong Kong/YU100/02(H5N1)-like avian virus, and they could be separated into at least two antigenic groups. Although we did not detect genetically identical strains, HI assay demonstrated c

Molecular analysis of the hemagglutinin genes of Australian H7N7 influenza viruses: role of passerine birds in maintenance or transmission?

In 1985 a fowl plague-like disease occurred in chickens in Lockwood, Victoria, Australia and caused high mortality. An H7N7 influenza virus was isolated from the chickens (A/Chicken/Victoria/1/85); additionally, an antigenically similar virus was isolated from starlings (A/Starling/Victoria/5156/85) and serological evidence of H7N7 virus infection was found in sparrows. Antigenic analysis with monoclonal antibodies to H7, oligonucleotide mapping of total vRNA, and sequence analysis of the HA genes established that the chicken and starling influenza viruses were closely related and probably cam

Evolving dynamics of H5Nx avian influenza in China revealed by long-term wild bird surveillance.

H5Nx highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses pose persistent threats to poultry, wildlife, and public health. Over the past two decades, their geographic and host ranges have expanded across migratory networks whose epidemiological connectivity has become increasingly apparent through recent surveillance and genomic analyses. To elucidate these dynamics, we conduct long-term nationwide wild-bird surveillance in China, integrating active and passive monitoring. Our analyses reveal the maintenance, reassortment, and transmission of H5Nx viruses in wild birds, highlighting the value of sustaine
