Databombing in Medicine.

The term 'data bombing' may be defined as the sharing of ultra current information or knowledge, during or after an educational talk in which updated data has not been covered by the speaker. Primary care physicians are increasingly being exposed to huge amounts of [often conflicting] data and opinions. This makes it challenging to follow recent advances in medicine in a pragmatic and practical way. This opinion piece describes data bombing and suggests ways of handling it.

Neuroscience for All: Sharing Neuroscience with Your Community.

Science communication plays an essential role in bridging the gap between researchers and the general public. Now, more than ever, it is essential for neuroscientists to interact with their communities to increase understanding of basic neuroscience concepts and enhance trust in academic scientists as members of the community. However, it can be difficult, as scientists, to develop and maintain effective lines of communication with the public. To address this, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, we have been organizing public outreach events aimed to educate the public about various as

[Analysis of the information on visceral leishmaniasis available through Brazilian portals of the worldwide web--internet].

With the aim of analyzing the adequacy of the information on visceral leishmaniasis that is available through Brazilian portals, a survey was conducted through a search portal, with selection and analysis of electronic page content. Twenty-four pages with informative purposes were identified, of which eight belonged to government bodies, 10 were commercial and six were classified as others. Using a systematized analysis form, the content of topics considered essential, relating to transmission, reservoirs, control and disease, was evaluated. The regulatory manuals of the Ministry of Health and

Standardising Access to Sensitive Data with Machine-Actionable Access Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: While many countries have invested heavily in secure technical infrastructures such as Trusted Research Environments (TREs), the rules that determine who may access which data, under what conditions, and for which purposes are still expressed primarily as natural language legal and administrative documents, with little or no accompanying machine-readable representation. This limits automation, interoperability, and scalability, particularly for research that spans multiple data holders. OBJECTIVES: This paper examines these challenges through the Dutch social science data landsc

Data sharing upon request and statistical consistency errors in psychology: A replication of Wicherts, Bakker and Molenaar (2011).

Sharing research data allows the scientific community to verify and build upon published work. However, data sharing is not common practice yet. The reasons for not sharing data are myriad: Some are practical, others are more fear-related. One particular fear is that a reanalysis may expose errors. For this explanation, it would be interesting to know whether authors that do not share data genuinely made more errors than authors who do share data. (Wicherts, Bakker and Molenaar 2011) examined errors that can be discovered based on the published manuscript only, because it is impossible to rean

A quantitative account of how limited information sharing undermines comprehensive literature syntheses.

Crucial aspects of reproducible, replicable and reusable science include the responsiveness of study authors for clarifications and the availability of research data and analysis results. Getting in contact with authors and obtaining information or results is, however, not always straight-forward. Here we report and discuss the issues and obstacles we faced when contacting authors of scientific papers with such requests. Our investigation rests on the results of a retrospective quantitative analysis of research data requests sent to authors of neuroimaging studies for a series of meta-analyses

Cooperative spreading between information and epidemics in metapopulation networks with quarantine interventions.

In the era of Information 2.0, the intricate coupling between information diffusion and human behavioral patterns is reshaping the spatiotemporal dynamics of disease transmission, thereby posing substantial challenges to containing the cross-regional spread of epidemics. To address this issue, we modify the classical movement-interaction-return model by incorporating mobility-based detection and then investigate the effects of heterogeneity in mobility patterns, induced by information diffusion and quarantine strategies, on the dynamic behaviors of epidemic spreading in multiplex metapopulatio

Sharing brain imaging data in the Open Science era: how and why?

The sharing of human neuroimaging data has great potential to accelerate the development of imaging biomarkers in neurological and psychiatric disorders; however, major obstacles remain in terms of how and why to share data in the Open Science context. In this Health Policy by the European Cluster for Imaging Biomarkers, we outline the current main opportunities and challenges based on the results of an online survey disseminated among senior scientists in the field. Although the scientific community fully recognises the importance of data sharing, technical, legal, and motivational aspects of

Examining gaps in institutional policies for clinical genomic data sharing: A cross-jurisdictional study.

The sharing of data generated by clinical genetic and genomic testing without explicit consent is important for timely diagnosis and treatment. While many jurisdictions permit the sharing of identifiable data for direct clinical care, institutional policies vary in how clearly they specify key elements, including when sharing is permitted, what data are covered, and what safeguards apply. Greater clarity around these elements may support responsible data sharing while balancing timely care with transparency and appropriate protections. We conducted a mixed-methods content analysis of data-shar

Digital Presence of Health Authorities in Germany and Switzerland: Implications for Open Public Health Data Readiness.

Open health data is arguably the cornerstone of modern public health strategy, enabling data-driven policymaking and promoting transparency. The extent and format of health data publication, however, vary widely across jurisdictions, especially within multi-tiered health governance systems. This study subsequently investigates the digital presence and open data strategies of health authorities in Germany and Switzerland, focusing on their official websites as the primary interface for public communication. A structured content assessment was conducted for 16 German state-level public health au

Obtaining and managing data sets for individual participant data meta-analysis: scoping review and practical guide.

BACKGROUND: Shifts in data sharing policy have increased researchers' access to individual participant data (IPD) from clinical studies. Simultaneously the number of IPD meta-analyses (IPDMAs) is increasing. However, rates of data retrieval have not improved. Our goal was to describe the challenges of retrieving IPD for an IPDMA and provide practical guidance on obtaining and managing datasets based on a review of the literature and practical examples and observations. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, until January 2019, to identify publications f

From Pandemic Response to Kill the Clipboard: Patient-Controlled Sharing of Health Data Using International Patient Summary (IPS) and QR codes.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in interoperability, patient-supplied medical histories commonly use paper-based forms. Dissatisfaction with this inefficiency has led to the "Kill the Clipboard" initiative from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to advance digital alternatives. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, patient-controlled vaccination record sharing demonstrated that Quick Response (QR) codes and digital data standards provide an effective option. Building on this, several nations are using three standards to securely view and exchange medical data: Fast He

Science and Videogames: From Scientific Dissemination to Knowledge Production.

Videogames are played by 42% of the global population. As an interactive medium, they require participants to engage actively in the constant construction of knowledge. Their relevance to human biology has been increasing and expanding, ranging from scientific dissemination to knowledge production. This article examines each of the videogames' possible scientific uses, including "commercial" games used for teaching and scientific dissemination, games created by scientists for science dissemination and science education, online games that enable players to help solve scientific problems, and ci

Myopia information on TikTok: analysis factors that impact video quality and audience engagement.

BACKGROUND: TikTok is emerging as a vital platform for health information dissemination. Despite myopia being a global public health issue, the high-quality myopia information shared by health educators often fails to go viral. It is imperative to analyze the factors influencing video quality and popularity, especially from diverse perspectives of researchers, health educators, and audiences. METHODS: TikTok myopia-related videos were retrieved using TikTok's default comprehensive search (DCS) and most liked search (MLS) strategies. Venn diagrams were employed to illustrate the relationships

Communicating Science with New Purpose.

The scientific enterprise of the United States is facing challenges on a scale that many living scientists have never encountered. After nearly a century of bipartisan support, the prominence of American science is threatened by dramatic cuts to the federal budget, political interference, and special interests. Although portions of the American public may be generally aware of these challenges, many are not well-versed in what the forthcoming changes mean for future advances in knowledge, our health, the environment, and the economy. Most training in science has focused on communicating the te

Proof of Concept Example for Use of Simulation to Allow Data Pooling Despite Privacy Restrictions.

BACKGROUND: Integrating results from multiple samples is often desirable, but privacy restrictions may preclude full data pooling, and most datasets do not include fully harmonized variable sets. We propose a simulation-based method leveraging partial information across datasets to guide creation of synthetic data based on explicit assumptions about the underlying causal structure that permits pooled analyses that adjust for all desired confounders in the context of privacy restrictions. METHODS: This proof-of-concept project uses data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and Atheroscle

Toward a manifesto for the 'public understanding of big data'.

In this article, we sketch a 'manifesto' for the 'public understanding of big data'. On the one hand, this entails such public understanding of science and public engagement with science and technology-tinged questions as follows: How, when and where are people exposed to, or do they engage with, big data? Who are regarded as big data's trustworthy sources, or credible commentators and critics? What are the mechanisms by which big data systems are opened to public scrutiny? On the other hand, big data generate many challenges for public understanding of science and public engagement with scien
