How Advancement in Bone Science Should Inform the Examination and Treatment of Femoral Shaft Bone Stress Injuries in Running Athletes.

Stress fractures likely have a 1-2% incidence in athletes in general. In runners, a more vulnerable population, incidence rates likely range between 3.2 and 21% with female runners having greater susceptibility. The incidence of femoral shaft stress fractures is less well known. New basic and translational science research may impact the way clinicians diagnose and treat femoral stress fractures. By using a fictitious case study, this paper applies bone science to suggest new approaches to evaluating and treating femoral shaft stress fractures in the running population.

Advancing youth HIV prevention and care in Uganda: stakeholder-informed innovations through implementation science, protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Compared with older adults, adolescents and young adults (AYA) face greater HIV incidence and poorer outcomes across the HIV prevention and care continuum. Despite the high HIV burden, youth in sub-Saharan Africa have suboptimal uptake rates of oral preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and viral suppression. Although effective interventions are available, AYA exhibit low uptake and persistence due to stigma, pill burden, and accessibility challenges. The HIV Prevention and Care Interventions for Youth in Uganda (HIP-CY) study aims to explore the adoption and effectiveness of cabotegravir

Using Community Science and eDNA to Inform a State-Designed Marine Protected Area Monitoring Program: A Case Study from Malibu, California.

Management of marine protected areas (MPAs) require long-term monitoring and evaluation that is often limited by the cost and effort of conventional visual based surveys. We evaluated a community science-based eDNA approach to MPA monitoring over two years in the Point Dume State Marine Reserve, the Point Dume State Marine Conservation Area, and two paired unprotected reference sites. Across the sampling period, we detected 119 species of fish and marine mammals, including 19 of the 22 regional management-priority species for Southern CA MPAs. Protected and unprotected comparison sites were br

Application of implementation science frameworks to inform the adaptation process of an evidence-based eating disorder prevention program for high-risk perinatal individuals.

BACKGROUND: The perinatal period is a high-risk time for body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. Evidence-based interventions for disordered eating have not been adapted to address the needs of this population. We describe the process of adapting the Body Project, an evidence-based eating disorder (ED) prevention program, for pregnant individuals with histories of disordered eating behaviors. METHOD: Our approach is informed by ADAPT, a framework offering guidance for adapting interventions to new contexts, to modify the Body Project for pregnant individuals. Following initial adaptations

Increasing Uptake of Depression Screening and Treatment Guidelines in Cardiac Patients: A Behavioral and Implementation Science Approach to Developing a Theory-Informed, Multilevel Implementation Strategy.

BACKGROUND: Depression leads to poor health outcomes in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Despite guidelines recommending screening and treatment of depressed patients with CHD, few patients receive optimal care. We applied behavioral and implementation science methods to (1) identify generalizable, multilevel barriers to depression screening and treatment in patients with CHD and (2) develop a theory-informed, multilevel implementation strategy for promoting guideline adoption. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of barriers to depression screening and treatment in patients wi

Content, implementation, and evaluation of capacity-strengthening initiatives for public and patient involvement in mental health research: a scoping review protocol informed by implementation science.

BACKGROUND: Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) in mental health research is increasingly recognised as a moral and ethical imperative, necessary to increase the relevance and effectiveness of translation of research findings. Despite policy mandates and growing evidence of its benefits, PPI implementation in mental health research remains inconsistent. Little attention has been given to the state of scientific knowledge on PPI capacity strengthening in mental health research that can support more meaningful implementation. The aims of this scoping review are to: describe the content, impleme

Cost-effectiveness of tuberculosis infection prevention and control interventions in South African clinics: a model-based economic evaluation informed by complexity science methods.

INTRODUCTION: Nosocomial Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) transmission substantially impacts health workers, patients and communities. Guidelines for tuberculosis infection prevention and control (TB IPC) exist but implementation in many settings remains suboptimal. Evidence is needed on cost-effective investments to prevent Mtb transmission that are feasible in routine clinic environments. METHODS: A set of TB IPC interventions was codesigned with local stakeholders using system dynamics modelling techniques that addressed both core activities and enabling actions to support implementation.

The impact of exposure to tobacco smoke and e-cigarettes on asthma-related outcomes: Systematic review informing the EAACI guidelines on environmental science for allergic diseases and asthma.

To inform the clinical practice guidelines' recommendations developed by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology systematic reviews (SR) assessed using GRADE on the impact of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and active smoking on the risk of new-onset asthma/recurrent wheezing (RW)/low lung function (LF), and on asthma-related outcomes. Only longitudinal studies were included, almost all on combustion cigarettes, only one assessing e-cigarettes and LF. According to the first SR (67 studies), prenatal ETS increases the risk of RW (moderate certainty evidence) and may increase t

Implementing behavioural science-informed letter interventions to increase COVID-19 vaccination uptake in London residents. A difference-in-difference study in London, United Kingdom.

The accelerated development of vaccines to mitigate COVID-19 was crucial in the response to the 2020 pandemic. The success of vaccination strategies relies upon adequate uptake across the population. In the United Kingdom, COVID-19 vaccination began in December 2020, with population groups invited in priority groups according to age and clinical vulnerability. By February 2021, uptake rates were lower in North West London than the national average. This study aimed to explore whether behaviourally-informed (BI) letters could increase the rate of first vaccine uptake in previously uncontactable

Does informational social media use negatively impact preventive behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic? The moderating roles of citizens' scientific knowledge and trust in science.

This study is first to examine the link between using social media as a primary COVID-19 information source and preventive behavior, while examining moderating effects. Using the O-S-R-O-R model and panel survey data from Germany (N = 776), it finds a negative direct effect of informational social media use on preventive behavior, and a negative indirect effect through conspiracy beliefs. However, the negative impact is less pronounced in individuals with high knowledge and trust in science. These findings underscore the importance of accurate, comprehensive social media communication, especia

Context analysis as a foundational step to inform the design and implementation of an interprofessional primary care model for new long-term medication users - the myCare Start Implementation Science Project.

BACKGROUND: Implementation science recognises that health innovations must be adapted to local contexts. Context analysis is a critical foundational phase for tailoring interventions and implementation strategies, yet remains underutilised in pharmaceutical sciences, limiting successful translation and scale-up of proven services in interprofessional settings. AIM: This paper provides a methodological roadmap highlighting the foundational role of context analysis in guiding real-world adaptation of a known service - the New Medicine Service - to form the myCare Start service in Switzerland.
