Why digital health fails silently: a sociotechnical theory of health information technology-related risk.

INTRODUCTION: Health information technology (HIT) is now integral to healthcare delivery, supporting clinical documentation, prescribing, diagnostics, and care coordination. Although these technologies offer substantial benefits, they have also introduced new patient safety risks that are often difficult to anticipate, detect, or manage. Many HIT-related safety problems arise not from isolated technical failures or individual mistakes, but from complex interactions between digital systems, clinical work practices, organisational structures, and governance arrangements. Traditional patient safe

Scenario-Based Evaluation of Team Health Information Technology to Support Pediatric Trauma Care Transitions.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians need health information technology (IT) that better supports their work. Currently, most health IT is designed to support individuals; however, more and more often, clinicians work in cross-functional teams. Trauma is one of the leading preventable causes of children's death. Trauma care by its very nature is team based but due to the emergent nature of trauma, critical clinical information is often missed in the transition of these patients from one service or unit to another. Teamwork transition technology can help support these transitions and minimize information los

Improving polio vaccination coverage in Nigeria through the use of geographic information system technology.

BACKGROUND: Historically, microplanning for polio vaccination campaigns in Nigeria relied on inaccurate and incomplete hand-drawn maps, resulting in the exclusion of entire settlements and missed children. The goal of this work was to create accurate, coordinate-based maps for 8 polio-endemic states in northern Nigeria to improve microplanning and support tracking of vaccination teams, thereby enhancing coverage, supervision, and accountability. METHODS: Settlement features were identified in the target states, using high-resolution satellite imagery. Field teams collected names and geocoordi

Navigating the information technology highway: computer solutions to reduce errors and enhance patient safety.

Standardized, seamless, integrated information technology in the health-care environment used with other industry tools can markedly decrease preventable errors or adverse events and increase patient safety. According to an Institute of Medicine (IOM) report released in 1999, preventable errors have caused between 44,000 and 98,000 deaths per year. Following the report, President Bill Clinton requested that the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality, a government agency, look into the issue and fund, at the local or state level, processes that can reduce errors. Funding subsequently was mad

Medcast: evaluation of an intelligent pull technology to support the information needs of physicians.

This study reports the initial results of an evaluation of Medcast, a commercial medical information service that uses intelligent pull technology to deliver medical information to practicing physicians. Medical news, CME, and other information are transferred by modem nightly to the physician's computers where this information can be accessed at a convenient time. A survey was faxed to 195 subscribers to the system. A total of 73 (39%) responded. The results indicate that prior to implementation of the Medcast system, almost 40 percent of the respondents did not use their computers for profes

Managing multiple perspectives in the collaborative design process of a team health information technology.

We need to design technologies that support the work of health care teams; designing such solutions should integrate different clinical roles. However, we know little about the actual collaboration that occurs in the design process for a team-based care solution. This study examines how multiple perspectives were managed in the design of a team health IT solution aimed at supporting clinician information needs during pediatric trauma care transitions. We focused our analysis on four co-design sessions that involved multiple clinicians caring for pediatric trauma patients. We analyzed design se

Revising the ECRIN standard requirements for information technology and data management in clinical trials.

The pilot phase of the ECRIN (European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network) certification programme for European data centres, in late 2011, led to a substantial revision of the original ECRIN standards, completed by June 2012. The pilot phase, the conclusions drawn from it and the revised set of standards are described. Issues concerning the further development of standards and related material are discussed, as are the methods available to best support that development. A strategy is outlined based on short-lived specific task groups, established as necessary by a steering group drawn f

Information technology tools to improve treatment of patients with depression: focus on guidelines implementation.

Information technology has the potential to improve and support the treatment of depression. Use of clinical guidelines can improve outcome of treatment, but implementation of guidelines is a demanding process and the resulting user compliance is often poor. Electronic health records, clinical decision support systems and other information technology tools seem at first glance to be a preferable way to implement clinical guidelines since they require user's active and problem oriented participation. This article reviews attempts made so far at use of information tools for implementation of cli

Adaptive, Symmetry-Informed Bayesian Metrology for Precise Quantum Technology Measurements.

High precision measurements are essential to solve major scientific and technological challenges, from gravitational wave detection to healthcare diagnostics. Quantum sensing delivers greater precision, but an in-depth optimization of measurement procedures has been overlooked. Here, we present a systematic strategy for parameter estimation in the low-data limit that integrates experimental control parameters and natural symmetries. The method is guided by a Bayesian quantifier of precision gain, enabling adaptive optimization tailored to the experiment. We provide general expressions for opti

Supporting Collaboration in Rehabilitation Trajectories With Information and Communication Technologies: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Despite a surge in health information and communication technology (ICT), there is little evidence of lowered cost or increased quality of care. ICT may support patients, health care providers, and other stakeholders through complex rehabilitation trajectories by offering digital platforms for collaboration, shared decision-making, and safe storage of data. Yet, the questions on how ICT can become a useful tool and how the complex intersection between producers and users of ICT should be solved are challenging. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to review the literature on how ICTs are us

A successful application of information technologies in the treatment of multiple sclerosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system characterized by inflammation, neurodegeneration, and failure of the central nervous system's repair mechanisms. The role of infectious agents against the background of genetic predisposition is currently considered a possible pathogenesis factor of this disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 52-year-old white (Russian) female musician with 15-year history of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis who had repeatedly received conventional therapy without much benefit. In 2017, she was admitted to the
