Intra-oral formication induced by occupational exposure mimicking inhalation abuse.

Multiple cases of nail salon workers with occupational exposure to acetone, toluene, and acrylic monomers, namely methyl methacrylate and cyanoacrylates, presented separately to our clinic with similar complaints of factitious gingival stomatitis and formication--an abnormal sensation like ants crawling on or inside the skin. Recognizing oral manifestations resulting from possible toxic chemical exposure is not generally thought to be within the realm of most dental practices, yet to assure appropriate care, dentists must be vigilant and include thorough patient interviews in the diagnostic eq

Facial swelling secondary to inhaled bronchodilator abuse: catecholamine-induced sialadenosis.

A patient with asthma presented with a history of recurrent episodes of facial swelling. The swelling occurred in the preauricular area and extended to the angle of the jaw. The patient attributed these episodes to a "food allergy" as they occurred during or immediately following meals. The only medication the patient was using was inhaled epinephrine (Primatene MistR), two puffs, ten to twenty times a day. Subsequent evaluation revealed that the patient had sarcoidosis. Differential diagnosis of the facial swelling included food-related angioedema, sarcoid parotitis, or catecholamine-induced

Skeletal Fluorosis Due To Inhalation Abuse of a Difluoroethane-Containing Computer Cleaner.

Skeletal fluorosis (SF) is endemic in many countries and millions of people are affected worldwide, whereas in the United States SF is rare with occasional descriptions of unique cases. We report a 28-year-old American man who was healthy until 2 years earlier when he gradually experienced difficulty walking and an abnormal gait, left hip pain, loss of mobility in his right wrist and forearm, and progressive deformities including enlargement of the digits of both hands. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of his lumbar spine, femoral neck, total hip, and the one-third forearm revealed bone

Dimensionality of hallucinogen and inhalant/solvent abuse and dependence criteria: implications for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fifth Edition.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has demonstrated the dimensionality of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, cocaine and amphetamine abuse and dependence criteria. The purpose of this study was to examine the dimensionality of hallucinogen and inhalant/solvent abuse and dependence criteria. In addition, we assessed the impact of elimination of the legal problems abuse criterion on the information value of the aggregate abuse and dependence criteria, another proposed change for DSM-IV currently lacking empirical justification. Thinner inhalation effects on oxidative stress and DNA repair in a rat model of abuse.

Humans can come into contact with thinner by occupational exposure or by intentional inhalation abuse. Numerous studies of workers for genotoxic effects of thinner exposure have yielded conflicting results, perhaps because co-exposure to variable other compounds cannot be avoided in workplace exposure studies. In contrast, there is no data concerning the genotoxic effects of intentional inhalation abuse. The aim of this project was to examine the genotoxic effects of thinner inhalation in an animal model of thinner abuse (rats exposed to 3000 ppm toluene, a high solvent concentration over a ve

Glycine and gamma-aminobutyric acid(A) receptor function is enhanced by inhaled drugs of abuse.

Inhalable solvents possess significant abuse liability and produce many of the neurobehavioral effects typically associated with central nervous system-depressant agents, including motor incoordination, anxiolysis, and the elicitation of signs of physical dependence on withdrawal. We tested the hypothesis that the commonly abused solvents toluene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCE), and trichloroethylene (TCY) affect ligand-gated ion channel activity, as do other classes of central nervous system-depressive agents. TCE and toluene, like ethanol, reversibly enhanced gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)(A) r

Development of an animal model of solvent abuse for use in evaluation of extreme trichloroethylene inhalation.

Self-intoxication by inhalation of vapors of trichloroethylene (TCE) and other solvents is widespread. In order to develop exposure protocols which typify episodes of TCE "sniffing", male Wistar-Munich rats were exposed to TCE vapor levels ranging from 9000 to 16 000 ppm. TCE in concentrations of 14 000 ppm and greater quickly produced loss of righting reflex. Recovery from the narcosis was very rapid. Central nervous system (CNS) depression was found to be cumulative in rats subjected for 5 h to alternating periods of 5 min of 15 000 ppm TCE and 15 min of fresh air. Ethanol markedly potentiat

Effects of abused inhalants and GABA-positive modulators in dizocilpine discriminating inbred mice.

There is in vitro evidence that some of the effects of abused volatile solvents may be produced by actions at the NMDA receptor. In addition, some solvents produce phencyclidine-like discriminative stimulus effects. The major goal of the present study was to further compare abused solvents to NMDA antagonists by testing them in two strains of mice trained to discriminate 0.17 mg/kg of the very selective uncompetitive NMDA antagonist, dizocilpine, from saline and contrast those results with several GABA(A)-positive modulators, PCP and ethanol. The results indicated that the discriminative stimu

Methanol toxicity from inhalational abuse of a methyl acetate-containing nail polish remover.

Methyl acetate is an organic solvent used in certain nail polish removers that hydrolyzes in aqueous environments to liberate methanol and acetic acid. This is a case report of a 47-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department intoxicated after an episode of loss of consciousness following recreational huffing of a nail polish remover containing methyl acetate. Laboratory studies demonstrated an elevated anion-gap metabolic acidosis suggestive of methanol toxicity. Diagnosis was confirmed through measurement of the serum methanol concentration, which was 35 mg/dL (reference range <

Changing community readiness to prevent the abuse of inhalants and other harmful legal products in Alaska.

This paper presents results from an application of the Community Readiness Model (CRM) as part of a multi-stage community mobilization strategy to engage community leaders, retailers, parents, and school personnel in preventing youth use of inhalants and other harmful legal products in rural Alaska. The CRM is designed to assess readiness to address a single social problem, based on a limited set of key informant interviews. In this study, researchers conducted 32 baseline and 34 post-intervention community readiness assessment interviews in four rural Alaskan communities. These interviews wit

Leukoencephalopathy due to inhalational and trans-conjunctival heroin abuse: First case report from Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: and importance: Heroin-induced leukoencephalopathy (HLE) is a rare illness that causes diffuse white matter destruction, leading to acute or subacute development of neurological signs and symptoms. Physicians must be aware of the likely clinical presentation to properly evaluate and diagnose this clinical entity. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a young gentleman who presented with acute stupor following his first instance of heroin vapor inhalation. He later confessed to trans-conjunctival application of the drug as well. His Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score improved with

Inhaled vs. oral alprazolam: subjective, behavioral and cognitive effects, and modestly increased abuse potential.

RATIONALE: Infrahuman and human studies suggest that a determinant of the abuse potential of a drug is rate of onset of subjective effects. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine if the rate of onset of subjective effects and abuse potential of alprazolam would be increased when administered via inhalation vs. the oral route. METHODS: Placebo, inhaled alprazolam (0.5, 1, and 2 mg), and oral alprazolam (1, 2, and 4 mg) were administered under double-blind, double-dummy conditions using a crossover design in 14 healthy participants with histories of drug abuse. Coal tar creosote abuse by vapour inhalation presenting with renal impairment and neurotoxicity: a case report.

A 56 year old aromatherapist presented with advanced renal failure following chronic coal tar creosote vapour inhalation, and a chronic tubulo-interstitial nephritis was identified on renal biopsy. Following dialysis dependence occult inhalation continued, resulting in seizures, ataxia, cognitive impairment and marked generalised cerebral atrophy. We describe for the first time a case of creosote abuse by chronic vapour inhalation, resulting in significant morbidity. Use of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-containing wood preservative coal tar creosote is restricted by many countries due to

Acute Sensorineural Hearing Loss After Abuse of an Inhaled, Crushed Oxymorphone Extended-Release Tablet.

Oxymorphone, a semisynthetic μ-opioid receptor agonist, is the major active metabolite of oxycodone. It is a highly potent narcotic analgesic due to its high lipid solubility, which allows it to readily cross the blood-brain barrier and enter the central nervous system. It is available as both an immediate-release and extended-release (ER) formulation. Oxymorphone can be abused by injection or inhalation of crushed tablets; thus, in 2011, the manufacturer of ER oxymorphone reformulated the drug with crush-resistant technology to deter its misuse and abuse. We describe the case of a previously

Phenotype-dependent inhibition of glutamatergic transmission on nucleus accumbens medium spiny neurons by the abused inhalant toluene.

Abused inhalants are voluntarily inhaled at high concentrations to produce intoxicating effects. Results from animal studies show that the abused inhalant toluene triggers behaviors, such as self-administration and conditioned place preference, which are commonly associated with addictive drugs. However, little is known about how toluene affects neurons within the nucleus accumbens (NAc), a brain region within the basal ganglia that mediates goal-directed behaviors and is implicated in the development and maintenance of addictive behaviors. Here we report that toluene inhibits a component of t

Relationship between solvent inhalation and antisocial behavior: special emphasis on two types of violence seen in solvent abusers.

Organic solvent inhalation is a serious problem among youths in Japan. It induces physical and mental disorders, and is related closely to crime and delinquency. The relationship between solvent inhalation and antisocial behavior was investigated in 75 youths. The subjects were divided into three groups according to the level of violent behavior and the time of appearance: a non-violent group, a late-onset group (violence occurred after the start of inhalation) and an early-onset group (violence had occurred before the start of inhalation). Various parameters were compared among the groups. Th

Toxic leukoencephalopathy after heroin abuse without heroin vapor inhalation: MR imaging and clinical features in three patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Toxic leukoencephalopathy has been associated with illicit heroin vapor inhalation. Despite the nonspecific and variable clinical presentation of these patients, they show typical radiologic findings. Previous studies evaluated typical radiologic findings with symmetric infratentorial hyperintense signal changes and similar alteration in the posterior limb of the internal capsule, the splenium of corpus callosum, the medial lemniscus and the lateral brainstem. In context with the reviewed literature, a series of another three cases with toxic leukoencephalopathy after h

[Lipid peroxidation and status of the antioxidant system in opiate addiction, chronic alcoholism, or substance abuse caused by inhaling solvent vapors].

Patterns of lipid peroxidation and the state of antioxidant systems were studied in 30 healthy volunteers (control), 18 patients with toxicomania developed as a result of inspiration of organic solvent vapors, 21 patients with chronic alcoholism and in 27 patients with opium narcomania within 4-6 years after withdrawal. The data obtained suggest that activation of lipid peroxidation and decrease in the rate of antioxidant response, which were detected in the patients with narcomania, correlated with severity of the psychopathological failures induced by chronic toxic effect of the narcotics or

[Inhalant-related disorder].

Inhalant abuse and dependence are prevalent in adolescent population because inhalants are inexpensive, legal and accessible substance for youth. In Japan, the prevalence of inhalant abuse and dependence is gradually declining in these days, although inhalants can still become a "gateway drug" to other dependent substances such as cocaine and cannabinoids. Inhalant abuse causes show serious mental and somatic symptoms, and mortality in acute and chronic phases, while the abusers are ignorant about it. This paper reviews recent studies that investigate the symptoms and the treatments of inhalan
