Inhibin B is a testicular hormone that regulates follicle-stimulating hormone secretion in a negative feedback loop. In males, the serum level of inhibin B is detectable throughout life, with a prominent change in the first year of life and during puberty, reflecting the testicular response to the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal hormone axis. Bovine follicular fluid was used as a source for the isolation of gonadal inhibin, the activity of which was monitored by the dose dependent suppression of the FSH content of cultured pituitary cells. The procedures presented result in over 3000-fold purification of the starting material and the purified inhibin has an apparent molecular weight of 56000. The purified inhibin can be dissociated under reducing conditions into two subunits with molecular weights of 44000 and 14000 daltons.

Serum and peritoneal fluid inhibin levels were measured by radioimmunoassay throughout the menstrual cycle in 14 women with endometriosis and in 16 controls. The FSH release from the hypophysis is suggested to be particularly regulated by a testicular hormone called inhibin. Origin, structure and target organs of inhibin are unknown.
