Accidents in the institutionalized elderly: injuries and consequences.

A total of 308 major and 519 minor accidents involving 588 patients occurred during one year at a somatic long-term care hospital and its associated nursing homes. In relation to the number of patients, the incidence of accidents was nearly three times higher in the nursing homes than in the hospital. The most prevalent injuries in female patients were fractures and hematomas, while open wounds were more frequent among male patients. Hip fractures were about as common in women as in men, while fractures of the extremities were three times more frequent in women. The majority of the accidents o

The epidemiology of skin tears in the institutionalized elderly.

While skin tears are a common occurrence in the institutionalized elderly population, nothing has been written about this problem. We retrospectively studied all incident reports during a 1-year period at a large, urban, long-term-care facility to identify residents with skin tears. The overall incidence of skin tears was 0.92 per patient per year. The incidence rate for females, but not for males, increased significantly with age (P = 0.012). The mean length of the skin tear was 1.9 cm +/- 1.4 (mean +/- SD). Eighty percent occurred in the upper extremities, with the most frequent location bei

[Institutionalized treatment of agoraphobia with panic anxiety].

We describe an integrated behavioral-psychodynamic treatment programme for inpatients suffering from agoraphobia and panic anxiety. This programme emphasizes intensive drug-free exposure training followed by work with anxiety-laden dynamic conflicts. We present promising results of evaluation studies, and discuss the important role of cognitive reconstruction of anxiety and of passive and active avoidant attitudes in exposure training. Lastly, we make certain recommendations concerning the approach to anxiety problems in general practice.

Medications of elderly institutionalized incontinent females.

The purpose of the study was to explore drug use of elderly incontinent female nursing home residents, to identify potential drug--drug interactions, and to identify the number and categories of drugs taken having the potential to cause urinary incontinence. The medication administration records of 84 female residents were examined. The drugs were categorized by therapeutic classification as designated by the American Hospital Formulary Service. Potential drug--drug interactions were identified using The Hansten Drug Interaction Knowledge Base Program, a microcomputer version of Hansten's (198

Scoliosis in the institutionalized cerebral palsy population.

A prospective review of 272 institutionalized cerebral palsy residents was undertaken in order to determine the incidence and characteristics of neuromuscular scoliosis in this population. The types of cerebral palsy in the group consisted of 75% spastic, 8% dyskinetic, 4% ataxic, 8% mixed, and 5% undefined. There was a 64% incidence of roentgenographic scoliosis greater than 10 degrees. Two distinct curve patterns were determined with equal frequency, single and multiple. The significance of the curve patterns could not be determined. Scoliosis was most common in the spastic group with the hi

Factors Influencing the Institutionalization of Health Technology Assessment: A Scoping Literature Review.

There is global interest in institutionalizing Health Technology Assessment (HTA) to inform resource allocation decisions. However, institutionalization of HTA remains limited particularly in low- and lower-middle-income countries. We conducted this scoping review to synthesize evidence on factors that influence the institutionalization of HTA at the macro (national)-level across countries globally. We searched for relevant literature in six databases namely PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, EconLit, and Google Scholar. We conducted the last search on December 31, 2021. We identified 77 articles

Social networks, institutionalization, and mortality among elderly people in the United States.

This study focuses on the effect of social networks on institutionalization and mortality among elderly people in the United States. Data are from the Longitudinal Study of Aging (LSOA), which incorporates a baseline interview in 1984 and a follow-up interview two years later. The study population consists of a sample of 5,151 noninstitutionalized elderly people who were 70 years of age or older in 1984. Multivariate analyses using logistic regression revealed that social networks are negatively related to the likelihood of institutionalization and mortality when controlling for sociodemograph

Institutionalization and home health care after acute hospitalizations of older persons in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing and strained public resources challenge the future provision of health and care services. We assess the uptake of formal health-related care services (FCS), either home health care (HHC) or short- or long-term institutional care (IC), before and after an acute hospital admission in a full-population sample of older persons. METHODS: Multinominal logistic population average regression models were applied to Norwegian registry data on older persons (aged 75+) in 2021 (N = 68,803) at hospital discharge following admission for select diagnoses (N = 94,748) to examine

Mortality and Institutionalization After Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy in Parkinson's Disease and Related Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) can facilitate feeding and medication administration in dysphagic patients with Parkinson's disease and related disorders. Information on survival, institutionalization, and complications post PEG might inform feeding decisions. METHOD: A total of 93 patients with Parkinson's disease and related disorders were identified by review of PEG registers and by searching the administrative databases in 2 large UK university hospitals (2005-2017); 83 case notes were available for retrospective review. Care processes and outcomes were assessed. RE

Nutrition risk factors for institutionalization in a free-living functionally dependent elderly population.

Risk factors for institutionalization of frail elderly have been studied but the role of nutritional status has not been addressed. A prospective cohort of 288 frail elderly (81 male; 207 female; mean age: 78.2 +/- 7.6 years) were recruited from the current list of those receiving home help services and followed for 3-5 years. At baseline, height, weight, and arm muscle circumference were measured. Self-reported weight loss prior to baseline, energy, and protein intake were recorded. Covariates included sociodemographic factors, social network variables, functional and health status. Cox's mul

Institutionalization, involuntary sterilization, and mental retardation: profiles from the history of the practice.

For much of the 20th century, the practice of sterilization was a common accompaniment to institutionalization for individuals with mental retardation. Following the Supreme Court's decision in Buck v. Bell (1927) supporting the practice, numerous states passed legislation and, consequently, over 60,000 individuals with mental retardation were sterilized in this country. In the present study we analyzed data on 212 individuals in Virginia who were sterilized. Our focus included gender, age at and date of sterilization, level of mental retardation, and location of subsequent discharge. The natu
