INTRODUCTION: Early dental visits in childhood, in addition to preventing dental problems, can also be effective in promoting the quality of life. The age of the first visit and the reasons for it vary in different countries depending on the level of education in the community, economic conditions, availability of health facilities and pattern of health services in the country. This study was conducted to understand the reasons for Iranian parents' attitude to dental visits and its relationship with social and economic indicators.
METHOD: The checklist was used to record the data. It consiste

OBJECTIVES: Examine dental utilization by Medicaid-insured children living in a high-resource area. Characterize distance and travel-related variables to accessing care.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data were collected on dental clinics in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, caring for Medicaid-insured children ≥1 year. Shortest distances, drive times, and bus travel between dental clinics and high-poverty census tracts were determined through geographical information systems analysis. Primary care clinic (PCC) survey data were analyzed for children's dental use. Demographic characteristics and travel-rela

INTRODUCTION: Dental care is a critical component of healthy aging; however, emerging evidence suggests that having been previously incarcerated is a risk factor for not using dental care services. This study investigates the relationship between prior incarceration and dental care among older adults and assesses whether wealth and dental insurance explain this relationship.
METHODS: Data are from the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling older adults in the United States, collected in 2012 and 2014. Multivariable logistic regression is used to

INTRODUCTION: The aims of this study were to estimate state-level racial inequities in dental care use among children in the U.S., overall and by insurance type, and to examine relationships between inequities and state-level structural racism.
METHODS: Pooled 2017-2019 data from the National Survey of Children's Health were used to estimate racial inequities in dental care use. Independent variables included state-level structural racism indicators and other factors.
RESULTS: There was substantial variation in the degree and direction of inequities across states and by insurance type. Inequ

Lack of access to oral care is a severe problem in the United States with over one-third of the population lacking dental insurance. In this group, 32 million people lack dental insurance and access to public dental services (Medicaid or Medicare), and 7 million of them need dental care. In some high-risk populations, such as Native Americans, two-thirds have unmet dental needs. Only 1 percent of Medicaid-eligible babies have a dental examination before twelve months of age. In this paper the social covenant of the dental profession is examined and suggestions made for improving access to care

A national survey of employed adults showed a decrease in the extent and severity of periodontal disease in comparison with findings from earlier studies. Using data from that survey, this report evaluates the association of socioeconomic factors--race, education, income and dental insurance, as well as most recent dental visit--with the prevalence and extent of periodontal disease. Periodontitis was more prevalent and usually more extensive in persons who are black, have less education or had not seen a dentist in three or more years. Having dental insurance was not associated with better per

Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between demographics, dental beliefs and practices, fatalism, oral health self-efficacy, and oral health fatalism (OHF) among parent (guardian, caregivers). Methods: English-speaking parents of children presenting for dental care at a hospital dental clinic, a dental surgery center, and two private practices answered a 33-item questionnaire regarding demographics, general fatalistic views, and dental beliefs, practices, and history. Participants rated their agreement with the OHF statement: "Most children eventually develop dental cavities." Results: More

Background/Objectives: Oral health is a critical component of public health, yet disparities in access and financing remain significant. In Bulgaria, dental services are financed through the National Health Insurance Fund and patient co-payments, with coverage differing between children and adults. The aim of this study was to analyze the dynamics of health insurance payments and expenditures for dental care in Bulgaria over the period 2019-2025, with a focus on differences between age groups and the balance between public funding and patient contributions. Methods: A retrospective descriptive

OBJECTIVES: Cancer patients often have compromised oral health, making them vulnerable to severe dental caries and restoration failures. Due to the nature of cervical or anterior caries in cancer patients, the use of adequate restorative materials is important. However, public dental insurance coverage for composite treatments varies among countries and only glass ionomer cements (GICs) are covered in all age groups in South Korea. This study examined the cost-effectiveness of expanding national health insurance coverage to include resin composite (RC) restorations as compared with GIC in canc

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to analyze a comprehensive nationally representative data set to determine the effect of economic and non-economic determinants on the decision to seek care and the decision to select a specific number of dental visits.
DESIGN: The conduct of this study involved the examination and analyses of secondary data available from the National Health Interview Survey. A two-part choice logistic regression model was utilized to first describe the decision to seek care and second to describe factors associated with the decision to select a specific number of de

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of dental caries is high in Japan, leading to a huge burden of overall expenditure on dental caries treatment for the population. School-based fluoride mouth-rinse (S-FMR) has been implemented as a public health intervention. However, its cost-effectiveness remains unclear, where universal health insurance covers a broad range of dental treatments at relatively low cost. The aim of the study was to determine whether S-FMR is associated with lower dental caries treatment expenditure in Japan, where the universal health insurance system widely covers dental treatments.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the incidence of traumatic dental injury and consequential dental impairment following road traffic accidents and to examine the factors that can affect the monetary value of compensation for bodily injury payable pursuant to current insurance regulations.
METHODS: From 2004 to 2014, 7233 persons involved in road traffic accidents in the province of Messina, eastern Sicily, were examined by insurance physicians to assess bodily injury damage. Data were collected from cases of traumatic dental injury causing malocclusion and tem

Sealants are highly effective in preventing dental caries in the pits and fissures of teeth when applied by trained operators in clinical trials and public health programs. The effectiveness of fissure sealants when applied in dental practices is still not known. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the effectiveness of fissure sealants applied in dental practices in preventing dental caries on occlusal surfaces of first permanent molars. In 1990, on the Island of Montréal, 911 randomly selected children, from 6 to 9 years of age, were examined; out of those, 816 and 733 were

BACKGROUND: Decreased salivary secretion is not only a risk factor for carious lesions in Sjögren's disease (SD) but also an indicator of deterioration of teeth with every restorative replacement. This study determined the longevity of direct dental restorations placed in patients with SD using matched electronic dental record (EDR) and electronic health record (EHR) data.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using EDR and EHR data of Indiana University School of Dentistry patients who have a SD diagnosis in their EHR. Treatment history of patients during 15 years with SD (cases

AIMS: To identify the effect of unmet dental treatment needs and socioeconomic and sociodemographic variables on the patterns of dental visits in the presence of dental pain in 6- to 12-year-old Mexican schoolchildren.
METHODS: A case-control study included 379 patients that had a dental visit because of dental pain in the 12 months preceding this study and 1,137 controls. Mothers and/or guardians supplied sociodemographic, socioeconomic, and oral health-related information through a questionnaire. The profiles of unmet dental needs and of oral hygiene were ascertained by means of a standardi
