Incarceration History and Health Insurance and Coverage Changes in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines the association of incarceration history and health insurance coverage and coverage changes in the U.S. METHODS: Individuals with and without incarceration history were identified from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 with follow-up through 2017-2018 (n=7,417). Generalized estimating equations were used to examine the associations between incarceration history and health insurance and coverage changes in the past 12 months. This study also assessed variation in associations by incarceration duration, frequency, and recency and reoffence history.

Impact of Health Insurance Expansions on Nonelderly Adults With Hypertension.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in the United States. The treatment and control of hypertension is inadequate, especially among patients without health insurance coverage. The Affordable Care Act offered an opportunity to improve hypertension management by increasing the number of people covered by insurance. This study predicts the long-term effects of improved hypertension treatment rates due to insurance expansions on the prevalence and mortality rates of CVD of nonelderly Americans with hypertension. METHODS: We deve

The health insurance plight of patients with sickle cell disease.

Despite chronic illness that requires routine medical follow-up as well as occasional acute care and hospitalizations, many persons with sickle cell disease (SCD) are not getting the care that they need. The primary reason for lack of proper care is due to the patients' lack of health insurance coverage. This paper will examine the problem of health insurance coverage among persons with chronic illnesses using SCD as a model. It is speculated by the author that persons who suffer from other chronic illnesses may also experience similar problems in obtaining health coverage. Supporting data for

Who benefits more from an improved social health insurance? Evidence from supplementary high-cost illness insurance in China.

BACKGROUND: China introduced the Supplementary High-Cost Illness Insurance (SHCII) to strengthen financial protection against medical impoverishment. This study assesses its effectiveness and, critically, examines the distribution of its benefits across population subgroups to identify who benefits more. METHODS: We used 2013 and 2018 survey data from Shandong Province and a difference‑in‑differences design, restricting the sample to hospitalized patients (n = 3,136). The treatment group comprised patients whose out‑of‑pocket expenses exceeded city‑specific 2018 SHCII thresholds; the control

Health insurance and subjective well-being: evidence from integrating medical insurance across urban and rural areas in China.

Health insurance coverage and the risk protection it provides may improve enrollees' subjective well-being (SWB), as demonstrated, e.g. by Oregon Medicaid's randomized expansion significantly improving enrollees' mental health and happiness. Yet little evidence from low- and middle-income countries documents the link between insurance coverage and SWB. We analyse individual-level data on a large natural experiment in China: the integration of the rural and urban resident health insurance programmes. This reform, expanded nationally since 2016, is recognized as a vital step towards attaining th

Patient Perspectives on Health Insurance Design: A Mixed-Methods Analysis.

There remains a persistent lack of patient-centered evidence on insurance reform and real-world experiences of patients with chronic disease. This study gathered insights around insurance design from chronic disease beneficiaries. This mixed-methods analysis comprised an online survey and virtual focus group sessions (August to December 2023) involving US residents with chronic disease and health insurance. Patients' perspectives on insurance design were explored. Survey data were analyzed descriptively. Key themes were identified from focus group transcripts and direct observations. In total,

Health insurance expansion and family violence prevention: A conceptual framework.

Family violence, including child maltreatment (CM) and intimate partner violence (IPV), plagues far too many American families, particularly those in low-income communities. CM and IPV are intertwined and impose a significant emotional, health and financial burden on children and families and an economic burden on our country. Although these and other forms of violence are influenced by shared risk factors across the socioecological spectrum, prevention efforts typically intervene on a single type of violence at a microsystem level via individual or family intervention. Research is needed to i

Insurance Types, Usual Sources of Health Care, and Perceived Discrimination.

INTRODUCTION: Discrimination can compromise access to and utilization of health care and lead to poorer health. As such, it is important to understand the factors associated with experiences of discrimination in health care. METHODS: Using data from the 2015 to 2017 California Health Interview Survey (n = 63,100), this study examined whether insurance types and sites of usual sources of care were associated with reasons for perceived discrimination in health care and whether the reasons were associated with delaying health care. Identification of ovarian cancer symptoms in health insurance claims data.

BACKGROUND: Women with ovarian cancer have reported abdominal/pelvic pain, bloating, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, and urinary frequency/urgency prior to diagnosis. We explored these findings in a general population using a dataset of insured women aged 40-64 and investigated the potential effectiveness of a routine review of claims data as a prescreen to identify women at high risk for ovarian cancer. METHODS: Data from a large Washington State health insurer were merged with the Seattle-Puget Sound Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) cancer registry for 2000-2004.

Genomics and Discrimination in New Zealand Health and Life Insurance.

The use of genomics offers substantial benefits to society by revolutionising approaches to healthcare and personalised medicine. It enables early detection of genetic predispositions to various diseases, allowing for proactive and tailored treatment plans, access to clinical trials, and improved health outcomes. Additionally, genomic testing plays an important role in focusing research activity by advancing our understanding and knowledge of molecular contributions to diseases and driving innovation in medical science. 'Genetic testing' is sometimes used interchangeably with 'genomic testing'

The role of health insurance coverage in cancer screening utilization.

INTRODUCTION: Although previous studies have shown a correlation between health insurance coverage and cancer screening, underinsurance and cancer screening among racial/ethnic minorities has not been examined. METHODS: Data from the 2000 and 2003 National Health Interview Surveys are used in this analysis. Cross-tabulations, age, and racial/ethnic group stratified regression analyses are used to examine associations between health insurance status and receipt of mammography, Pap testing, prostate specific antigen tests, fecal occult blood test (FOBT) and colorectal endoscopy. [Association of Health Insurance and Socio-economic Factors with Health Care for Malignant Melanoma].

Objective: To analyze the relationship between socio-demographic and regional factors, health insurance status and clinical features of malignant melanoma (MM). Methods: Primary data from a nationwide dermato-histopathologic laboratory on all consecutive excisions with proven diagnosis of MM over the 5-year period 2009-2013 were analyzed regarding tumor-specific and socioeconomic characteristics. The tumor depth (Breslow index) being a predictor of invasive MM progression and mortality was defined as a major indicator for early detection and intervention, thus reflecting quality of health care

Health Insurance Coverage Predicts Health Care Use among Latine Immigrants in Two Policy Contexts.

This study analyzed electronic health record (EHR) data from 2016 through 2019 from a federally qualified health center (FQHC) serving predominantly low-income Latine immigrants in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area to examine how changes in health insurance coverage relate to changes in health care use. Federally qualified health center clients were insured for an average of 59% to 63% of their annual visits, but about one-third had no coverage throughout the year. Findings from descriptive regression and within-client fixed effects models indicate that in years with higher proportions of

PURPOSE: Four vaccines are routinely recommended for adolescents: tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap); human papillomavirus (HPV); meningococcal-conjugate (MCV4); and a yearly seasonal influenza vaccine. Vaccination promotion and outreach approaches may need to be tailored to certain populations, such as those with chronic health conditions or without health insurance. METHODS: In a controlled trial among middle and high school students in Georgia, 11 schools were randomized to one of three arms: no intervention, parent education brochure, or parent education brochure plus a s

Beyond numbers: Public health insurance and oesophageal cancer mortality risk.

In this article, we comment on the work put forth by Wu et al regarding the investigation of oesophageal cancer-specific mortality for a cohort of patients from Chongqing University Cancer Hospital. We specifically focused on the implications of public health plans such as Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance (UEBMI) and Urban Resident Basic Medical Insurance as well as out-of-pocket ratios on patient treatment plans regarding whether they pursue surgical interventions or therapeutic treatments such as chemotherapy. While Wu et al put forth potential explanations for why patients with the UE

Swiss-CHAT: Citizens Discuss Priorities for Swiss Health Insurance Coverage.

BACKGROUND: As universal health coverage becomes the norm in many countries, it is important to determine public priorities regarding benefits to include in health insurance coverage. We report results of participation in a decision exercise among residents of Switzerland, a high-income country with a long history of universal health insurance and deliberative democracy. METHODS: We adapted the Choosing Healthplans All Together (CHAT) tool, an exercise developed to transform complex healthcare allocation decisions into easily understandable choices, for use in Switzerland. [Costs of ulcerative colitis within the German Statutory Health Insurance].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Studies estimating the costs of ulcerative colitis (UC) within the German setting are limited. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to collect data on the overall costs arising from the care of patients with UC and to quantify this expenditure as incurred by the German Statutory Health Insurance (SHI). METHODS: Between March 2006 and July 2007 patients from 24 ambulatory gastroenterologist practices and two hospitals were enrolled in an internet-based database. Outpatient and inpatient visits, all procedures as well as drug usage were obtained from the collecte

Health insurance and ex ante moral hazard: evidence from Medicare.

Basic economic theory suggests that health insurance coverage may cause a reduction in prevention activities, but empirical studies have yet to provide much evidence to support this prediction. However, in other insurance contexts that involve adverse health events, evidence of ex ante moral hazard is more consistent. In this paper, we extend the analysis of the effect of health insurance on health behaviors by allowing for the possibility that health insurance has a direct (ex ante moral hazard) and indirect effect on health behaviors. The indirect effect works through changes in health promo
