Challenges in Management of Hand Injuries in Psychiatric Patients.

Managing hand injuries in patients with concurrent psychiatric illness poses a significant challenge in patient care. An increasing segment of literature has also linked worse surgical and nonsurgical outcomes to patients with underlying psychiatric disease. As a result, the goal of this case series is to highlight the common themes seen in psychiatric patients who experience hand injuries and the factors that challenge the recovery, treatment, and overall outcome. The study was conducted in our hand therapy clinic. Outpatient clinic records were scanned from December 2023 to March 2024. Patien

Justifiable Psychopharmacology or Overzealous Prescription? Examining Parental Reports of Lifetime Prescription Histories of Psychiatrically Hospitalised Children.

BACKGROUND: This research investigated parent reports of pre-admission psychotropic medication histories of psychiatrically hospitalised children in the United States. The emphasis was on identifying factors related to potentially overzealous medication use. METHOD: Diagnosis, insurance type, and demographics for 170 consecutive admissions were assessed via research case conference and chart review. An extreme group of children with lengthy medication histories (n = 20) was also identified, and prescription and diagnostic patterns for this group were compared to other medicated children in th

Ethnic disparities in the perception of ethical risks from psychiatric genetic studies.

To examine if ethnic differences in concerns about unfavorable consequences from psychiatric genetic studies, existing between non-Hispanic Black and White populations, persist among participants in an actual genetic study of bipolar disorder. Historically, minority subjects have been less willing to participate in such studies. Participants in the US Bipolar Genome Study (BIGS) were assessed on six items of concerns in the Questionnaire on Genetic Risk (QGR). Each item had five response categories, ranging from "not at all" concerned to "very concerned." Responses from Black (N = 188) and Whi

Screening for psychiatric illness in primary care. A cross-sectional study in a Swedish health district.

A sample of 388 primary care patients in a Swedish health district were screened for psychiatric illness using the Hopkins Symptom Check List HSCL-25. General practitioner (GP) ratings of psychiatric illness and patient ratings of psychosocial problems were also included. Data concerning the patients' utilization of care and health insurance were recorded. According to the HSCL-25, 30.2% of the patients were probable psychiatric cases and 19.2% were psychiatric cases in need of treatment. According to GPs' independent ratings, 12.3% of the patients suffered from psychiatric illness requiring t

Dilemmas of anonymous predictive testing for Huntington disease: privacy vs. optimal care.

Some persons at risk for Huntington disease (HD) seek predictive testing under the protection of anonymity to reduce the risk of insurance discrimination for themselves and their families. While Canadian and European health care systems seem to limit insurance discrimination to life and disability insurance, U.S. residents do not have national health insurance and are concerned about health insurance discrimination. Two persons residing outside Canada requested predictive testing anonymously. Their primary reason for doing so was to avoid the risks of medical insurance discrimination. After a

Level of preparedness to use psilocybin among individuals seeking psychedelic risk reduction: a retrospective study of a pilot psychiatric consultation service.

INTRODUCTION: In 2020, Oregon became the first US state to legalize state-regulated psilocybin services. This study aims to examine: (1) the clinical and demographic characteristics, (2) psilocybin use motivations, and (3) differences in preparedness among patients seeking care in an Oregon-based pilot consult service specializing in psilocybin risk reduction. METHODS: This exploratory retrospective chart review abstracted sociodemographics, trauma history, and medical and psychiatric risks of patients (November 2023-September 2025). The Psychedelic Preparedness Scale (PPS), a validated self-

Dysthymia increases the risk of temporomandibular disorder: A population-based cohort study (A STROBE-Compliant Article).

Numerous studies have investigated the relationship between depression and temporomandibular disorders (TMD), but the conclusions remain vague. The aim of this study was to examine the causal effect between depression and TMD.The reporting of this study conforms to the STROBE statement. In this retrospective cohort study, all samples were recruited from a representative subdataset of 1 million insured persons for the year 2005 Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, who were randomly selected from all beneficiaries enrolled in the National Health Insurance program of Taiwan. The prevalence of psychiatric symptoms before the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease in a nationwide cohort: A comparison to patients with cerebral infarction.

OBJECTIVES: Psychiatric symptoms (PS) can be non-motor features in Parkinson's disease (PD) which are common even in the prodromal, untreated phase of the disease. Some PS, especially depression and anxiety recently became known predictive markers for PD. Our objective was to explore retrospectively the prevalence of PS before the diagnosis of PD. METHODS: In the framework of the Hungarian Brain Research Program we created a database from medical and medication reports submitted for reimbursement purposes to the National Health Insurance Fund in Hungary, a country with 10 million inhabitants

Primary care experiences of people with psychiatric disabilities: barriers to care and potential solutions.

This study examined the barriers that 16 focus group participants with psychiatric disabilities confront in obtaining primary care services and their recommendations on improving quality of care. They cited a) difficulty identifying a primary care physician with good empathic and communication skills, b) physicians' misunderstanding of the nature of psychiatric disability, c) inadequate information about the side effects of psychotropic medications, and d) costs due to inadequate insurance coverage. In addition to suggestions for improving patient-physician communication and expanding physicia

PURPOSE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder linked to metabolic and psychiatric comorbidities. Emerging evidence suggests maternal PCOS may also impact offspring neurodevelopment. This population-based cohort study investigates the association between maternal PCOS and the risk of major psychiatric disorders in offspring, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Sociodemographic Determinants of Nonadherence to Depression and Anxiety Medication among Individuals Experiencing Homelessness.

Psychiatric medication nonadherence continues to be a leading cause of poor health outcomes for individuals experiencing homelessness. Identifying the sociodemographic factors that contribute to medication nonadherence may help guide strategies to care for and support this group. This study examined 200 adults with depression diagnoses and active anti-depressant prescriptions (Mage = 43.98 ± 12.08, 59.4% Caucasian, 58.5% male, 70% uninsured, 89.5% unemployed) and 181 adults with anxiety diagnoses and active anti-anxiety prescriptions (Mage = 43.45 ± 11.02, 54.4% Caucasian, 57.5% male, 66.3% un

[Marginal case of a practice fee for psychiatric emergency service].

Since 1 January 2004, the German Act for the Modernisation of Health Insurance (GMG) has regulated collection of a so-called practice fee-a charge to patients for their first outpatient health care in any given quarter. We report the case of a slightly inebriated patient who, against his will, was taken to a psychiatric outpatient department by local authorities, where he had to pay the quarterly charge of 10 EUR. Considering that he was forced and therefore had to pay the fee against his will, the present regulation is being discussed with respect to legal and moral implications in psychiatri

IMPORTANCE: Within the physiological range, early pubertal timing is associated with an increased risk of mental health issues. Previous studies examining the associations of central precocious puberty (CPP) with mental health have yielded inconclusive results. OBJECTIVE: To describe the risk for development of psychiatric disorders in patients with CPP and to identify periods during which patients with CPP are at heightened risk of developing psychopathological conditions.
