Critical care medicine focuses on understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms and treatment approaches for life-threatening conditions, including sepsis, severe trauma/burns, hemorrhagic shock, heatstroke, and acute pancreatitis, all of which have high incidence rates. These conditions are primarily characterized by acute multi-organ dysfunction, with sudden onset, severe illness, and high mortality rates. Additionally, critical care treatment demands substantial medical resources, imposing significant economic burdens on patients' families and society. In recent years, critical care medic

Carinal resections are consistently described in the literature as one of the most challenging procedures in thoracic surgery. Depending on the underlying disease and its extent, different resection forms and reconstruction techniques are required. From a surgical point of view, the complex anatomy, and the technique of reconstruction of the central airway are particularly challenging. However, complex airway management and extensive postoperative follow-up demonstrate that these procedures require a multidisciplinary team effort beyond surgical expertise. This article reviews the most importa

The Chicago Consensus Working Group provides multidisciplinary recommendations for the management of peritoneal mesothelioma. These guidelines are developed with input from leading experts including surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, palliative care physicians, and pharmacists. These guidelines recognize and address the emerging need for increased awareness of the appropriate management of peritoneal surface disease. They are not intended to replace the quest for higher levels of evidence.

Treatment of children with cancer, in particular with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), has been highly successful in the past two decades owing to the implementation of treatment optimization studies. Study centres appointed by scientific societies design treatment optimization study protocols (TOSPs) that address an investigator-initiated research question and detail treatment procedures according to these aims. Nearly all children with malignant diseases are treated within TOSPs, whereas children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and other common paediatric rheumatic diseases are

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial microsomia is one of the most common conditions treated by craniofacial teams. However, research regarding the cause of this condition or the surgical outcomes of treatment is scant. This is attributable to the lack of diagnostic criteria and the wide phenotypic spectrum. Standardized description of the craniofacial malformations associated with craniofacial microsomia is a necessary first step for multicenter, interdisciplinary research into this complex condition.
METHODS: The authors used the previously published pictorial Orbit, Mandible, Ear, Nerve, and Soft tiss

Developmental neuropsychology is concerned with uncovering the underlying basis of developmental disorders such as specific language impairment (SLI), developmental dyslexia, and autistic disorder. Twin and family studies indicate that genetic influences play an important part in the aetiology of all of these disorders, yet progress in identifying genes has been slow. One way forward is to cut loose from conventional clinical criteria for diagnosing disorders and to focus instead on measures of underlying cognitive mechanisms. Psychology can inform genetics by clarifying what the key dimension

BACKGROUND: Families of infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) experience emotional distress, inconsistent communication, and difficulty navigating complex, high-acuity care. Although advances in neonatal medicine have improved survival, increasing care complexity highlights the need for structured approaches that strengthen family-centered support and interdisciplinary communication.
PURPOSE: To describe implementation of a NICU Registered Nurse (RN) Navigator role designed to enhance family support, communication, care coordination, and transitions from the NICU to home

PURPOSE: Effective communication is essential for the delivery of quality cancer care; however, few clinicians receive formal communication training. There is a growing need for communication training tailored towards the interdisciplinary team's role in patient-centered care and addressing communication across all aspects of cancer care. The goals of this National Cancer Institute-funded training program were to (1) identify the eight domains of quality palliative care applicable across all stages of cancer, (2) demonstrate skills in key clinical areas of communication through lab sessions, a

BACKGROUND: Care pathways (CPWs) are complex interventions that have the potential to reduce treatment errors and optimize patient outcomes by translating evidence into local practice. To design an optimal implementation strategy, potential barriers to and facilitators of implementation must be considered. The objective of this systematic review is to identify barriers to and facilitators of the implementation of CPWs in primary care (PC).
METHODS: A systematic search via Cochrane Library, CINAHL, and MEDLINE via PubMed supplemented by hand searches and citation tracing was carried out. We co

INTRODUCTION: Prevention science is interdisciplinary, drawing upon multiple fields of research and practice to develop integrated knowledge. A challenge facing the field is the proliferation of different terms with the same meaning, and of terms with different meanings. This can create confusion in communication, affect evaluation standards, and ultimately also affect the implementation of preventive interventions. Contributing to the development of evidence standards for preventive interventions, this article describes the process and results of interdisciplinary prevention terminology devel

The management of craniosynostosis is complex. This complexity is further complicated by the diverse phenotypes, syndromes, and functional issues that compound this. Although the objectives of craniofacial surgery are consistent, the current terminologies used to describe the clinical condition do not illustrate priorities and operational concerns. In addition, evidence suggests that specialists often adopt a narrow perspective when treating these conditions, a trend that underscores the need for a more integrated approach. We proposed a classification notion predicated on the patient's initia

Langerhanscell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare malignant disease, which commonly occurs during childhood and adolescence, but may also be seen in adult patients. Although LCH lesions are mostly found in bones, skin and the pituitary gland, the disease may affect almost each organ and cause a variety of symptoms. There are differences between pediatric and adult patients regarding diagnostics and therapy. Better insights in the pathophysiology of the disease resulted in the development of new therapeutic approaches such as the use of RAF or MAP-Kinase inhibitors and may help to guide therapy. Alt

Basal cell naevus syndrome (Gorlin-Goltz syndrome) is a rare, autosomal dominantly inherited condition with a wide range of developmental and multiple organ-related anomalies. Cardinal features include multiple basal cell carcinomas, jaw cysts, palmoplantar pits and calcification of the falx cerebri. Other important clinical features are skeletal abnormalities and facial dysmorphism including macrocephaly. Germ-line mutations are found in PTCH1. Management of the syndrome requires a multidisciplinary approach, and in this article management guidelines are reviewed and discussed.

Pediatric patients in concurrent hospice and palliative care often face fragmented communication regarding family goals of care during acute hospitalizations. This quality improvement project evaluated clinician and care coordinator experiences with the implementation of the Preference for Acute Rehospitalization Scale at Children's Nebraska. A pre- and postimplementation survey design (n = 41 pre-implementation; n = 35 postimplementation) assessed awareness of family goals, confidence in decision-making, and perceptions of the tool among an interdisciplinary team. While clinicians expressed g

Even in the ideal case of well-coordinated cooperation between anesthesiological and surgical as well as interventional colleagues, a departmental control unit is required to undertake the management of the central surgical unit. Conflict management and the communication of decisions represent only one part of the range of tasks of operating room (OR) management. In contrast, strategic planning, control of higher level patient flows within the entire hospital, capacity and personnel planning and the increasingly important quality management are the core competencies of a good OR manager. In the spring of 2020, our hospital faced a surge of critically ill coronavirus disease 2019 patients, with intensive care unit (ICU) occupancy peaking at 204% of the baseline maximum capacity. In anticipation of this surge, we developed a remote communication liaison program to help the ICU and palliative care teams support families of critically ill patients. In just nine days from inception until implementation, we recruited and prepared ambulatory specialty providers to serve in this role effectively, despite minimal prior critical care experience. We report here the primary elements neede

Multidisciplinary tumor boards have evolved to address the increasing complexity of cancer care management. Given that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) often arises in the setting of underlying cirrhosis, expert input from hepatologists alongside hepatobiliary and transplant surgeons, radiation oncologists, interventional and body radiologists, and medical oncologists has become increasingly important in order to offer patients appropriate cancer treatments. The MDLTB structure has evolved since the early 2000s to bring these specialists together at regularly scheduled meetings to develop a ther
