Mechanisms of intergenerational transmission of polycystic ovary syndrome.

Developmental origins of adult disease (DoHAD) refers to critical gestational ages during human fetal development and beyond when the endocrine metabolic status of the mother can permanently program the physiology and/or morphology of the fetus, modifying its susceptibility to disease after birth. The aim of this review is to address how DoHAD plays an important role in the phenotypic expression of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the most common endocrinopathy of women characterized by hyperandrogenism, oligo-anovulation and polycystic ovarian morphology. Clinical studies of PCOS women are i

Genes and the intergenerational transmission of BMI and obesity.

This paper compares the strength of intergenerational transmission of body mass index (BMI) and obesity in a sample of adoptees relative to a matched sample of biological children with similar observable characteristics. We find that BMI and obesity are strongly correlated among biological parent-child pairs, but there are no significant intergenerational associations in these health traits among adoptive parent-child pairs. The intergenerational elasticity of BMI for children to their parents is 0.2 in the matched biological sample, but indistinguishable from zero for adopted children with a

Chronicity of Violence Foretold: Toward an Integrated Theory of Intimate Partner Violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a worldwide social problem. The current study explores underlining mechanisms of phenomenon by tying together intergenerational transmission theory, socialization theory, and trauma theory. It learns from men how the father figure shaped by their childhood experiences has contributed to their violence, how the father's socialization to manhood has affected their intimate relations, and how they understand the effect of being exposed to the father's violence on their own intimate relationships and violence. Interviews with 25 Israeli men were analyzed thematic

Effects of Parental Childhood Maltreatment on Children's School Adaptation: An Intergenerational Perspective Based on Envy.

Previous studies have examined the impact of maternal childhood maltreatment (CM) on children's school adaptation (SA), neglecting the role of fathers, and the joint influence of both parents. Based on family systems theory, this study explored the intergenerational impact of parental CM on children's SA and the mediating role of benign envy (BE) and malicious envy (ME). A total of 334 elementary school students' BE, ME, and SA statuses and their parents' CM, BE, and ME statuses were collected to construct the intergenerational transmission models of BE and ME for fathers, mothers, and parents

Moving Closer for the Grandchild? Fertility and the Geographical Proximity of a Mother and Her Adult Daughter in a Dynamic Perspective.

Recent research has analyzed how the geographical distance between mothers and adult daughters influenced the daughters' fertility transitions. The inverse relationship has received less attention: that is, whether a daughter's fertility-her pregnancies and the ages and number of her children-is affected by her geographical proximity to her mother. The current study helps to close this gap by considering moves by either adult daughters or mothers that lead them to live nearby again. We use Belgian register data on a cohort of 16,742 firstborn girls aged 15 at the beginning of 1991 and their mo

Preventing early child maltreatment: implications from a longitudinal study of maternal abuse history, substance use problems, and offspring victimization.

In the interest of improving child maltreatment prevention science, this longitudinal, community based study of 499 mothers and their infants tested the hypothesis that mothers' childhood history of maltreatment would predict maternal substance use problems, which in turn would predict offspring victimization. Mothers (35% White/non-Latina, 34% Black/non-Latina, 23% Latina, 7% other) were recruited and interviewed during pregnancy, and child protective services records were reviewed for the presence of the participants' target infants between birth and age 26 months. Psychology and Indigenous People.

Whether there are common features inherent to the psychology of Indigenous peoples around the globe has been the subject of much debate. We argue that Indigenous peoples share the experience of colonization and its social and psychological consequences. We develop this argument across four sections: (a) the global history of colonization and social inequalities; (b) aspects concerning identity and group processes, including the intergenerational transmission of shared values, the connection with nature, and the promotion of social change; (c) prejudice and discrimination toward Indigenous peop

Supported Home Ownership and Adult Independence in Milan: The Gilded Cage of Family Housing Gifts and Transfers.

This article analyses practices of intergenerational support for homeownership among different generations of families in Milan, Italy, highlighting the role of housing in family welfare relations and life-course transitions. It makes use of an original dataset of qualitative interviews investigating homeownership pathways and the negotiations of support that they pre-suppose. The article explores the meanings and moral reasoning behind the decision to accept (or not) support in context of contemporary discourses surrounding the liquidity and availability of housing and finance. It highlights

Generation Gaps in Digital Health Literacy and Their Impact on Health Information Seeking Behavior and Health Empowerment in Hungary.

Background: Today the internet is a major source of health information, and younger generations have more confidence in their digital information seeking skills and awareness of online resources than older generations. Older generations, however, are more in demand of health services. The aim of our study was to explore these generational differences as related to self-perceived eHealth literacy and health care system utilization. Methods: A cross-sectional survey study with 522 subjects was done in Hungary. Every subject belonged to one of four generations (Baby boomers, X, Y, and Z). The Web

What Does the Implementation of Peer Care Training in a U.K. Prison Reveal About Prisoner Engagement in Peer Caregiving?

The number of aging and chronically ill prisoners continues to rise within the United Kingdom prison demography; consequentially, many institutions face health and social care crises of immense proportions. The needs of this group are both complex and costly, and in the United Kingdom, this is set to a backdrop of overcrowding, increasing violence, and public spending cuts in line with government austerity targets. In this context, the development of prisoner peer caregiving is proposed as an approach to mitigating the effects of aging, disability, and illness. A qualitative study was implemen

Intergenerational transmission of gambling: links between young adult and perceived grandparent gambling attitudes and behavior.

This study examined associations between the gambling attitudes and behavior of 213 young adults and their perceptions of the gambling attitudes and behavior of their closest grandparent. Regression analyses showed that young adult gambling attitudes mediated the relations between perceived grandparent gambling attitudes and behavior and young adult gambling behavior. Grandparent-grandchild relationship quality experienced while growing up did not moderate the relations between young adult and perceived grandparent gambling attitudes and behavior. Men experienced gambling at a younger age and

Celiac disease as a manifestation of Munchausen by proxy.

In typical cases of Munchausen by proxy maltreatment, a mother feigns or produces illness in her child. Her primary goal is to accrue emotional gratification, and no mental disorder better accounts for the behavior. We present the first published case in which the principal manufactured ailment was celiac sprue. In addition, a panoply of other ailments ranging from seizures to behavioral abnormalities was reported. The case is also very unusual in the involvement of the paternal grandmother and, to a lesser extent, the paternal grandfather as the perpetrators. Although definitive intervention

Intergenerational impact of maternal trauma on adolescent depression: The role of parenting factors in Samoan mother-daughter dyads.

Prior research has found links between maternal trauma and adolescent depression symptoms via maternal depression symptoms and parenting practices; however, these relationships have not been explored in American Samoa - a critical oversight given the centrality of family in this context and a high prevalence of adolescent mental health problems. This exploratory retrospective cohort study aimed to fill this gap. We assessed maternal trauma, maternal and child depressive symptoms, and parenting practices among 98 mother-adolescent daughter (13-18 years) dyads using multivariable linear regressi

The Influence of Parental Social-Emotional Competencies on Intergenerational Child Maltreatment: A Scoping Review.

Child maltreatment is a major public and global health issue with well-documented intergenerational patterns. Social-emotional development, which is detrimentally impacted by child maltreatment, has been associated with parenting behaviors and implicated as a mechanism of intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment. This scoping review sought to synthesize information on the social-emotional skills that contribute to or protect against intergenerational maltreatment. Following the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis systematic scoping review methodology, 23 studies were identified as ha

The intergenerational cycle of substance use and its association with child maltreatment and school maladjustment: A path analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although the intergenerational transmission of substance use and trauma is well-documented, the full pathways linking substance use, child maltreatment, and school maladjustment remain underexamined across three generations. This study aims to examine the pathway from maternal grandparents' substance use to youth substance use and school maladjustment through biological mother's alcohol use and child maltreatment behaviors. Beyond Ageist Attitudes: Researchers Call for NIH Action to Limit Funding for Older Academics.

PURPOSE: This article explores manifestations of ageism in response to a proposed National Institutes of Health (NIH) Emeritus Grant initiative aimed at funding older investigators. DESIGN AND METHODS: Comments were requested by NIH in 2015, through a Request for Information (RFI) as well as a public blog regarding the merits of a proposed grant mechanism that would help older researchers transfer their labs to junior scientists and transition into retirement. This article reports content analysis of comments from 134 respondents to the blog. RESULTS: We found consistent patterns of disappro

Intergenerational Contact and Ageist Beliefs: Perspective-Taking as a Mediator.

Ageism is of increasing concern as the population of older adults increases globally. As such, understanding the influence of intergenerational contact between younger adults and older adults is crucial in reducing ageism. The current study explored intergenerational contact between young adults and older adults and perspective-taking as predictors for young adults' ageist beliefs, utilizing Allport's (1954) contact hypothesis as the theoretical foundation. Participants aged 18-26 (M = 23.07, SD = 2.15) were recruited using Prolific Academic and responded to a quantitative survey including sca

Older employees' workplace fear of missing out and intergenerational knowledge transfer: A conservation of resources perspective in AI-exposed work contexts.

In AI-enabled workplaces, rapid technological change has increased the salience of knowledge renewal and intergenerational knowledge transfer in organizations. Although older employees possess valuable experience and tacit knowledge, they may also experience workplace fear of missing out when they perceive a risk of losing access to important information, career opportunities, social connections, and developmental resources. Drawing on conservation of resources theory, this study examines why older employees' workplace fear of missing out reduces intergenerational knowledge transfer by develop

Determinants of intergenerational sexual relationships and HIV risk among South African women outpatients in Gauteng.

Age-discrepant sexual relationships may place women at risk for HIV infection in South Africa. Results are based on medical records and case-control interview data of 889 sexually experienced women outpatients aged 15-29 in a Gauteng township. Women with partners at least ten years older (intergenerational) show an elevated chance of having an early sexual debut, concurrent and transactional partners, and intimate partner violence. Hardship during childhood including parental loss, food insecurity and abuse are related to age asymmetric relationships. HIV is two times more likely (aOR=1.96) wi
