Attentional Focus Strategies Can Improve Performance of Postural Control in Runners.

Attentional focus strategies, especially external focus, are associated with improvements in mechanisms of postural control. This can be important in reducing sports injuries in practices such as running, which has seen an increase in adherence. However, the impacts of these strategies on postural control in runners are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of internal and external focus strategies on postural control performance with different bases of support tasks in runners. A total of 19 young adults (18-38 years old) were divided into a running group (n = 9) and a control

Corporate whistleblower system and workplace safety performance: from the dual perspectives of safety investment and internal control.

INTRODUCTION: While corporate whistleblower system helps prevent and mitigate corporate violations within business operations, yet its effectiveness in the field of workplace safety remains largely unsubstantiated. Thus, it is both theoretically and practically important to examine whether and how the adoption of whistleblower system is associated with workplace safety performance. METHODS: Grounded in an integrated framework of accident causation theory (explaining the direct effect on safety performance), deterrence theory (elucidating the mediating role of safety investment), and signaling

Health Locus of Control and Neurocognitive Function in Latinx and Non-Latinx White People Living With HIV: A Cross-sectional Study.

Research suggests that health locus of control (HLOC) is related to important health and neurocognitive outcomes in people living with HIV. However, the role of ethnicity in these relationships remains poorly understood. This study explored the role of HLOC on neurocognition in a diverse sample of 134 people living with HIV (Latinx: n = 96; non-Latinx White: n = 38) who completed comprehensive neurocognitive evaluations and the Multidimensional HLOC Scale-Form C. Results indicate no ethnocultural differences in HLOC beliefs (ps > .05). External HLOC (i.e., chance and powerful others) related t

Physical family violence and externalizing and internalizing behaviors among children and adolescents.

Family violence has been associated with various negative outcomes among children and adolescents. Yet, less is known about how unique forms of physical family violence contribute to externalizing and internalizing behaviors based on a child's developmental stage. Using data from the Illinois Families Study and administrative Child Protective Services data, we explored the relation between 3 types of physical family violence victimization and externalizing and internalizing behaviors among a sample of 2,402 children and adolescents. After including parent and family level covariates in Poisson

Interpersonal attributional biases in hallucinatory-prone individuals.

Research in the area of auditory hallucinations has found that the occurrence of a hallucinatory experience is mediated, in part, by a bias towards making an external attribution for private events and experiences. The current study examined whether external attributional biases in hallucinators extend to their interpretation of social-cognitive interpersonal events. University students scoring high and low on the Launay-Slade Hallucination Scale (LSHS) were compared on self-report measures of locus-of-control (LOC) orientation, psychosis proneness and on the Phares [Journal of Abnormal and So

On the prediction of aggressive behavior from the Rorschach.

Research on predicting aggressive or hostile behavior from the Rorschach was reviewed. This overview suggested that the propensity for acting aggressively or in a hostile manner seemed less related to the quantity or quality of aggressive content than to indicators of impoverished control, e.g., CF+C > FC, F + % < 70, what some Rorschachers refer to as 'ego control.' However, methodological issues in the research on content which could have compromised these results were also discussed as was the kind of research still needed.

The abstinence violation effect in bulimia nervosa.

Bulimia nervosa often follows a chronic and relapsing course. To understand relapse in this disorder, we highlight cognitive processes underlying the binge/purge cycle. Links are drawn between cognitions, causal perceptions, and the binge/purge cycle in a reformulation of the abstinence violation effect with a special focus on attributions. This reformulation is then applied to the lapse-relapse transition in bulimia nervosa. Finally, theoretical and clinical implications of the reformulation are presented.

A scale to measure locus of control of behaviour.

Many behaviour, psychotherapy and healthy life-style programmes require subjects to take responsibility for the control of the old unwanted behaviours or to be responsible for maintaining new desired behaviours after therapy has ended. A scale to measure the locus of control of behaviour would be valuable if it could predict persons likely to relapse following apparently successful therapy. A 17-item Likert-type scale to measure this construct was developed and shown to have satisfactory internal reliability, to be test-retest reliable in the absence of treatment, to be independent of age, sex

The influence of motion control shoes on the running gait of mature and young females.

BACKGROUND: This study compared the running gait of mature and young females, and investigated the effect of a motion control shoe. First, it was hypothesised that in a neutral shoe, mature females would display significantly greater rearfoot eversion, knee internal rotation and external adductor moments when compared to a younger group. Secondly, the motion control shoe would reduce rearfoot eversion and knee internal rotation in both groups. Thirdly it was hypothesised that the motion control shoe would increase knee external adductor moment, through an increase in knee varus and moment arm.

Poor Adherence to Oral Psychiatric Medication in Adults with Schizophrenia May Be Influenced by Pharmacophobia, High Internal Health Locus of Control and Treatment Duration.

Objective: This study in Spain, Argentina, and Venezuela included 212 schizophrenia outpatients prescribed 387 psychiatric medications and 1,160 other psychiatric outpatients prescribed 2,067 medications. Methods: Logistic regression models included adherence for each psychiatric medication, measured by the Sidorkiewicz Adherence Tool, as the dependent variable. The models provided adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of dichotomous independent variables: 1) clinical variables, 2) subscales from the Patient Health Beliefs Questionnaire on Psychiatric Treatment (presence/absence of pharmacophobia and pha

On the feeling of doing: dysphoria and the implicit modulation of authorship ascription.

The experience of authorship arises when we feel that observed effects (e.g., the onset of a light) are caused by our own actions (e.g., pushing a switch). This study tested whether dysphoric persons' authorship ascription can be modulated implicitly in a situation in which the exclusivity of the cause of effects is ambiguous. In line with the idea that depressed individuals' self-schemata include general views of uncontrollability, in a subliminal priming task we observed that dysphoric (compared with nondysphoric) participants experienced lower authorship of action effects when the self-conc

Correlates of the MMPI-2 anger content scale.

Scores on the MMPI-2 anger-content scale were correlated with those on Spielberger's anger expression scale, Zelin, et al.'s anger self-report scale, and the Cook and Medley hostility scale. Subjects were 32 men and 33 women in college. As expected, the anger-content scale correlated significantly with measures of anger awareness, anger expression (anger out versus anger in), and negatively with anger control. There was also a significant correlation with measures of hostility (projection of anger) for men.

Western-style diet impairs stimulus control by food deprivation state cues: Implications for obesogenic environments.

In western and westernized societies, large portions of the population live in what are considered to be "obesogenic" environments. Among other things, obesogenic environments are characterized by a high prevalence of external cues that are associated with highly palatable, energy-dense foods. One prominent hypothesis suggests that these external cues become such powerful conditioned elicitors of appetitive and eating behavior that they overwhelm the internal, physiological mechanisms that serve to maintain energy balance. The present research investigated a learning mechanism that may underli

Rotator cuff strength in recurrent anterior shoulder instability.

BACKGROUND: Although rotator-cuff muscle contraction plays an important role in stabilizing the glenohumeral joint, little is known about the role of these muscles in the pathophysiology of recurrent anterior instability. We intended to analyze the association between isokinetic internal rotator and external rotator muscle strength and glenohumeral joint instability in patients with recurrent anterior instability that was not previously treated surgically. METHODS: We enrolled thirty-seven patients with unilateral recurrent anterior posttraumatic shoulder dislocation and eleven healthy nonath

Thinking about thinking: Neural mechanisms and effects on memory.

It is a well-established finding that memory encoding is impaired if an external secondary task (e.g. tone discrimination) is performed simultaneously. Yet, while studying we are also often engaged in internal secondary tasks such as planning, ruminating, or daydreaming. It remains unclear whether such a secondary internal task has similar effects on memory and what the neural mechanisms underlying such an influence are. We therefore measured participants' blood oxygenation level dependent responses while they learned word-pairs and simultaneously performed different types of secondary tasks (

Top-Down Attentional Modulation in Human Frontal Cortex: Differential Engagement during External and Internal Attention.

Decades of electrophysiological research on top-down control converge on the role of the lateral frontal cortex in facilitating attention to behaviorally relevant external inputs. However, the involvement of frontal cortex in the top-down control of attention directed to the external versus internal environment remains poorly understood. To address this, we recorded intracranial electrocorticography while subjects directed their attention externally to tones and responded to infrequent target tones, or internally to their own thoughts while ignoring the tones. Our analyses focused on frontal a
