German Non-Stuttering Primary School Children's Knowledge and Attitudes Towards Stuttering: International Comparison and Influencing Factors.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering, as a visible and audible deviation from the norm, often provokes negative reactions and leads to social stigmatisation. Studies have shown that there is a negative stuttering stereotype, the origins of which can be traced back to early life. As environmental reactions have a significant impact on the success of therapeutic interventions, understanding public knowledge and attitudes towards stuttering is essential to mitigate these prejudices at an early stage. AIMS: The present study collects the first specific data on the knowledge of German non-stuttering primary sch

International cooperation in veterinary public health curricula using web-based distance interactive education.

The expanding field of Veterinary Public Health places new demands on the knowledge and skills of veterinarians. Veterinary curricula must therefore adapt to this new profile. Through the introduction of case studies dealing with up-to-date issues, students are being trained to solve (real-life) problems and come up with realistic solutions. At the Department of Public Health and Food Safety of the Veterinary Faculty at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, positive experiences have resulted from the new opportunities offered by the use of information and communication technology (ICT)

A preliminary study on travel health issues of medical students undertaking electives.

BACKGROUND: With the inclusion of elective programs, often overseas, in many medical courses, it was decided that a preliminary retrospective analysis of health problems associated with these programs in medical students from the University of Tasmania would be desirable. METHODS: A questionnaire covering general travel health issues was distributed to all medical students in the University of Tasmania, on return from their elective. They were asked to complete the questionnaire and return it on an anonymous and voluntary basis. In addition, student elective submissions were consulted for inf

Educating overseas students: just another responsibility or a chance to grow for faculty?

With a gradual decrease of the university-entering young population, Japanese universities face more and more competition for survival. It is up to each university's efforts to be distinctive and competitive to flourish toward the 21st century. At Tokyo Medical and Dental University, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry will be reorganised in April 2000 as a graduate-school-centred university, where faculty will face increased demands in research activities while maintaining or even improving undergraduate education. On the other hand, our university has a 20-year history of ac

Reimagining pharmacology education.

We are arguably experiencing the greatest disruption to higher education in modern history. High-quality education research has demonstrated that active learning and other innovations are significantly more effective than traditional methods. The recent pandemic forced educators to adapt in previously unimaginable ways. Generative artificial intelligence now presents great challenges and opportunities for our approaches to teaching, support of learning and assessment, such as streamlining personalized feedback while raising concerns about academic integrity. This article provides a research in

Predictors of academic performance for applicants to an international dental studies program in the United States.

The number of U.S. and Canadian dental schools offering programs for dentists with degrees from other countries leading to the D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree has increased recently. This fact, along with the diversity of educational systems represented by candidates for these programs, increases the importance of identifying valid admissions predictors of success in international dental student programs. Data from 148 students accepted into the international dental studies program at the University of the Pacific from 1994 through 2004 were analyzed. Dependent variables were comprehensive cumulative

A European perspective on organ procurement: breaking down the barriers to organ donation.

A worldwide shortage of donor organs has led to the development of national and international systems for organ procurement and allocation. Such systems promote organ donation and ensure fair distribution of available donor organs through a combination of legislation, organ exchange organizations (OEOs), transplant coordinators, publicity campaigns, donor cards, and professional training programs. The development of national and international OEOs is central to this process because they maintain waiting lists and allocate organs in the most appropriate way. Most countries also employ transplan

Exploring Bidirectionality in Global Health Partnerships: Perspectives From U.S. Pediatric Residency Programs.

Introduction Despite growing interest, little guidance exists to re-evaluate global health partnerships (GHPs) through promoting bidirectionality. This study aims to understand the perspectives of United States (U.S.) pediatric global health (GH) faculty on institutional bidirectional practices to inform future discussions with international collaborators. Methods An internally, iteratively developed REDCap-based online survey (REDCap, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN), by our diverse author group, collected qualitative data from January 18 to February 20, 2023. International medical students' expectations and worries at the beginning of their medical education: a qualitative focus group study.

BACKGROUND: The number of international students has increased substantially within the last decade. Due to cultural barriers, this specific group faces diverse challenges. In comparison to German colleagues, international medical students perform significantly lower in clinical examinations and exceed the average duration of study; they suffer from personal distress as well as insufficient support. Within the present study, their individual perspectives, expectations, hopes and fears were examined. METHODS: Four focus groups with first-year international medical students (N = 16) were conduc

Being a Swedish university student in a country far away: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In Sweden, during the school years of 2021/22, 11,900 women and 8,100 men chose to spend a semester abroad; however, there has been little research on how they experience their time abroad and what difficulties they might face. Some studies have shown that Swedish exchange students consume alcohol to a higher degree and indulge in risky sexually behaviour while on exchange studies. Therefore, our aim was to explore Swedish exchange students' experiences from a semester abroad. METHODS: A qualitative design with semi-structured interviews. Eleven students who had spent parts of the

Problem gambling among international and domestic university students in Australia: who is at risk?

Young people are a high risk group for gambling problems and university (college) students fall into that category. Given the high accessibility of gambling in Australia and its association with entertainment, students from overseas countries, particularly those where gambling is restricted or illegal, may be particularly vulnerable. This study examines problem gambling and its correlates among international and domestic university students using a sample of 836 domestic students (286 males; 546 females); and 764 international students (369 males; 396 females) at three Australian universities.

International consensus guidance for general population screening for islet autoantibodies to diagnose early-stage type 1 diabetes: a nominal group technique process.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that targets and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreatic islets. The incidence of type 1 diabetes is rising globally. At the clinical diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, between 20% and 67% of children and adolescents present with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) requiring hospitalisation, and one-third of these require intensive care. Type 1 diabetes can be detected in early stages, prior to the insulin-requiring clinical diagnosis, through screening for islet autoantibodies (IAbs). Identifying individuals with early-stage type 1 diabetes, combine

PICS Live Case Demonstrations: Five-Year Review of a Collaborative Experience.

BACKGROUND: Live case demonstrations are widely used in interventional cardiology for procedural education and exchange of techniques and experience. Their educational value must be balanced against concerns regarding patient safety, privacy, and the potential influence of live discussion on procedural decision-making. We sought to characterize the Pediatric and Congenital Interventional Cardiovascular Society (PICS) live case experience and identify potential effects of live broadcasting on patient care. METHODS: We performed a retrospective qualitative and semi-quantitative review of PICS l
