To get what you need: healthy and pathological internet use.

One's passion for the Internet can be healthy, pathologically addictive, or somewhere inbetween. Where a person falls on that continuum is determined by the cluster of needs that are being fulfilled by his or her Internet use and how the internet addresses those needs. This article suggests eight factors that can help clarify the healthy or unhealthy qualities of one's commitment to cyberspace activities, as well the effect of those activities on the person's underlying needs. It then explores the types of needs addressed by internet use. The "integration principle" is proposed as a rule of th

Estimating disease burden using Internet data.

Data on disease burden are often used for assessing population health, evaluating the effectiveness of interventions, formulating health policies, and planning future resource allocation. We investigated whether Internet usage and social media data, specifically the search volume on Google, page view count on Wikipedia, and disease mentioning frequency on Twitter, correlated with the disease burden, measured by prevalence and treatment cost, for 1633 diseases over an 11-year period. We also applied least absolute shrinkage and selection operator to predict the burden of diseases. We found that

The use of the internet in data assimilation in rare diseases.

The incidence and prevalence of achalasia is 0.6/100,000 people per year and 1/10,000, respectively. It is difficult then for one center to accumulate a large cohort of patients. One study (Gut 33:1011,1992) described the presenting symptoms in only 38 patients. To approach this problem differently, we used the internet to access a larger patient population. Using search engines at Google and Yahoo, Inc., we identified achalasia support groups. We examined the most populated support group (YSG) and assembled the exchanged messages into 4 categories: support, symptoms, treatment, and diagnosis.

A comprehensive measure assessing different types of problematic use of the internet among Chinese adolescents: The Assessment of Criteria for Specific Internet-use Disorders (ACSID-11).

BACKGROUND: Problematic use of the internet (PUI) is prevalent, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Given the limited measures to assess specific types of PUI, which encompasses a broad spectrum of activities such as online gaming, social media use, pornography use, shopping, gambling, and web-streaming, Muller et al. (2022) developed the Assessment of Criteria for Specific Internet-use Disorders (ACSID-11) to comprehensively assess different types of PUI (i.e., gaming, shopping, social media use, gambling, and pornography use). The present study aimed to validate the Chinese ACSI

Off-Duty Internet Use and Depression: The Japanese Civil Servants Study.

INTRODUCTION: Both on-duty and off-duty internet use are increasing and may have health effects. Off-duty internet use, in particular, has increased rapidly due to the proliferation of smartphones. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between prolonged off-duty internet use and depression among Japanese civil servants. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2019 among 3,751 civil servants aged 20-65 years employed by a local government on the west coast of Japan. Psychosocial stress at work, work-family conflict, and time spent using the internet were evaluated. Logistic r

Recreational MDMA use in Norway: results from an internet convenience sample.

THE PURPOSE OF THE ARTICLE: In recent years, a renewed interest has emerged in investigating the use of MDMA in the treatment of mental disorders. However, knowledge about the characteristics of recreational use of MDMA, its contexts and effects are limited. METHODS: We recruited adult Norwegian participants aged 18 to 65 who reported having had a memorable experience after using MDMA. They completed an anonymous internet survey with 150 items covering matters related to recreational use of MDMA, as well as four standardized measures related to their experience and to personality functioning.

Brain morphology, harm avoidance, and the severity of excessive internet use.

As the previous studies have mainly focused on the reward system and the corresponding brain regions, the relationship between brain morphology and excessive internet use (EIU) were not clear; the purpose of the study was to investigate if the brain regions other than the reward system were associated with EIU. Data were acquired from 131 excessive internet users. Psychological measures included internet use, life quality, personality, mental illness symptoms, impulsivity, and thought suppression. The brain was scanned with 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and six types of brain morphologic

Substance and Internet use during the COVID-19 pandemic in China.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has adversely influenced human physical and mental health, including emotional disorders and addictions. This study examined substance and Internet use behavior and their associations with anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. An online self-report questionnaire was administered to 2196 Chinese adults between February 17 and 29, 2020. The questionnaire contained the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), questions on demographic information, and items about substance and Internet use

Social relational factors of excessive internet use in four European countries.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescents who deal with more emotional problems have been found to seek escape online, and struggle with excessive internet use (EIU). Poor social relationships have been linked with emotional problems. The current study investigated positive family and school relationships as protective factors against emotional problems and a preference for online social interaction (POSI), both specified as mediators of the association of family and school relationships with EIU. Cross-cultural differences in the model were tested. METHODS: A multi-group SEM was tested on representative sampl

Cognitive deficits in problematic internet use: meta-analysis of 40 studies.

BACKGROUND: Excessive use of the internet is increasingly recognised as a global public health concern. Individual studies have reported cognitive impairment in problematic internet use (PIU), but have suffered from various methodological limitations. Confirmation of cognitive deficits in PIU would support the neurobiological plausibility of this disorder. AIMS: To conduct a rigorous meta-analysis of cognitive performance in PIU from case-control studies; and to assess the impact of study quality, the main type of online behaviour (for example gaming) and other parameters on the findings. Problematic internet use and mental health among British children and adolescents.

Despite concerns about the effects of internet use, little is known about how problematic internet use impacts on British children and adolescents. By adapting the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire (PIUQ, Demetrovics, Szeredi, & Rózsa, 2008), this study seeks its validation while studying its association with psychopathological and health problems. A sample of 1,814 children and adolescents (aged 10-16 years old) from UK schools completed questionnaires about PIU, behavioural problems, depression, anxiety and health problems. Confirmatory Factor Analysis identified three independent facto

Internet use, misuse, and addiction in adolescents: current issues and challenges.

The Internet has revolutionized education and social communication in the 21st century. This article reviews the growing literature identifying a number of adolescents and young adults with a pathologically excessive Internet use leading to many potential consequences. Current research dilemmas in this area include that Internet addiction is a broad topic with no standard definition and no standard measurement tools. Management of youth with identified problematic Internet use or misuse centers on behavioral therapy and treatment of comorbidities. Pharmacologic approaches are limited at this t

Effects of internet use on health and depression: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The rapid expansion of the Internet has increased the ease with which the public can obtain medical information. Most research on the utility of the Internet for health purposes has evaluated the quality of the information itself or examined its impact on clinical populations. Little is known about the consequences of its use by the general population. OBJECTIVE: Is use of the Internet by the general population for health purposes associated with a subsequent change in psychological well-being and health? Are the effects different for healthy versus ill individuals? Does the impac

Problematic internet use among people with dentofacial deformity: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: Class III malocclusion represents one type of anterior malocclusions, characterised by a longer face and a more prominent chin. Class III malocclusions are a type of malocclusion related to the relationship between the maxilla and mandible. They are often characterized by mandibular protrusion relative to the maxilla, and in some cases, features such as elongation of the lower facial third or a more prominent chin may also be present. Due to their appearance, patients experience a range of psychosocial and emotional difficulties, which have also been identified as risk factors for p
