The Insular Cortex Dynamically Maps Changes in Cardiorespiratory Interoception.

Palpitations and dyspnea are fundamental to the human experience of panic anxiety, but it remains unclear how the brain dynamically represents changes in these interoceptive sensations. We used isoproterenol, a rapidly acting peripheral beta-adrenergic agonist similar to adrenaline, to induce sensations of palpitation and dyspnea in healthy individuals (n=23) during arterial spin labeling functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We hypothesized that the right mid-insular cortex, a central recipient of viscerosensory input, would preferentially respond during the peak period of cardiorespi

Impaired Interoception in a Preclinical Model of Functional Dyspepsia.

INTRODUCTION: The etiologies of functional dyspepsia symptoms, including postprandial distress syndrome, remain unknown. We tested the hypothesis that neonatal colon inflammation induces postprandial distress syndrome-like symptoms in adult life that associate with increased activation of vagal afferent pathways and forebrain limbic regions. RESULTS: These rats showed a significant decrease in nutrient meal consumption to satiety after an overnight fast, decrease in gastric emptying, decrease in total distance traveled, and decrease in percent distance traveled in midfield versus control rats

The role of interoception in alexithymia: a multidimensional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia, a personality construct characterized by difficulties in identifying and describing emotions, is closely linked to interoception—the ability to perceive one’s physiological state. However, existing research on alexithymia and interoception has not fully considered the multidimensional nature of interoceptive processes, particularly the distinct roles of subjective interoceptive accuracy and sensitivity. METHODS: This study measured subjective interoceptive accuracy and sensitivity separately using a well-validated self-report scale. Data were collected from two cohort

An FMRI meta-analysis of interoception in eating disorders.

Eating Disorders (EDs) are associated with disturbed interoception - the sense of the internal condition of the body. Disturbances in interoception across senses have not yet been comprehensively examined in EDs. To do so, we employed an innovative Bayesian author-topic model approach to fMRI meta-analyses that pools together neural deficits across interoceptive senses and task types in participants with and recovered from EDs. Following PRISMA guidelines, our results combine activation patterns from 1,341 initially screened studies and data from 25 manuscripts that met study criteria that com

A Primer on Interoception and its Importance in Psychiatry.

Interoception is the perception of signals from inside the body. It plays a significant role in the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and endocrine systems. It is also closely related to the autonomic nervous system and inflammatory pathways and plays a significant role in our optimal functioning. Recently, interoception has gained more attention in neuropsychiatric research. Anatomical and physiological aspects of interoception like relevant brain areas, the role of the vagus nerve, and the autonomic nervous system are gradually being understood. Different

Gastrointestinal Interoception in Eating Disorders: Charting a New Path.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Abnormal interoception has been consistently observed across eating disorders despite limited inclusion in diagnostic conceptualization. Using the alimentary tract as well as recent developments in interoceptive neuroscience and predictive processing as a guide, the current review summarizes evidence of gastrointestinal interoceptive dysfunction in eating disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Eating is a complex process that begins well before and ends well after food consumption. Abnormal prediction and prediction-error signals may occur at any stage, resulting in aberrant gastroint

Interoceptive profiles of eating and weight disorders.

Signals from the body’s interior undergo several interoceptive processing steps, from the periphery to the central nervous system, to conscious recognition and evaluation. Alterations in some of these steps have been reported for eating and weight disorders, but systematic comparisons between steps and disorders are necessary to develop targeted interventions. We recorded electrocardiogram and electroencephalogram from adult women with anorexia nervosa (AN; n = 38), bulimia nervosa (BN; n = 35), binge eating disorder (n = 22), obesity (OB; n = 20), and healthy control individuals (n = 46) duri

An interoceptive basis for alcohol priming effects.

RATIONALE: Alcohol priming can modulate the value of rewards, as observed through the effects of acute alcohol administration on cue reactivity. However, little is known about the psychophysiological mechanisms driving these effects. Here, we examine how alcohol-induced changes in bodily states shape the development of implicit attentional biases and explicit cue reactivity. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the interoceptive correlates of alcohol priming effects on alcohol attentional biases and cue reactivity. METHODS: In a two-session double-blind alcohol administration procedure, participants

Vagal Interoceptive Modulation of Motivated Behavior.

In addition to regulating the ingestion and digestion of food, sensory feedback from gut to brain modifies emotional state and motivated behavior by subconsciously shaping cognitive and affective responses to events that bias behavioral choice. This focused review highlights evidence that gut-derived signals impact motivated behavior by engaging vagal afferents and central neural circuits that generally serve to limit or terminate goal-directed approach behaviors, and to initiate or maintain behavioral avoidance.

Interoceptive exposure exercises for social anxiety.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) commonly experience panic attacks and evidence increased anxiety sensitivity (AS) specific to noticeable anxiety sensations. Interoceptive exposure (IE) is an effective treatment for reducing AS, but few IE tasks target fears of blushing, sweating, or trembling, which are incorporated within AS social concerns and especially feared by individuals with SAD. The primary study aims were trifold: (1) identify novel IE tasks that produce blushing, sweating, and/or trembling; (2) assess the intensity of sensations and anxiety produced by a series of nov

Body core compression enhances interoception leading to altered risk choices.

Interoception, the perception of internal states, is suggested to be important in decision-making, by guiding responses to external cues, based on internal states. Body compression can amplify visceral signals, and thereby potentially change interoception and adapt decision-making accordingly. Although crucial for intervening in interoceptive and decision-making dysfunctions, causal evidence of interoceptive change and its relation to decision making is lacking. In a within-subject experimental study, we investigated the effects of shapewear compression on interoception and decision-making. He

Selective interoception impairments and treatment effects in borderline personality disorder.

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) suffer from severe emotional dysregulation and disturbances in body image and self-perception. Interoception, the processing and perception of internal body signals, is closely linked to emotional processing, but it remains unclear whether BPD impairs specific interoceptive facets and how these deficits respond to treatment. We investigated two key interoceptive facets, accuracy and attention, in BPD patients and healthy controls (HC) using self-report and objective measures before (nBPD=55,nHC = 31) and after (nBPD=37,nHC = 31) four-week res

Role of childhood trauma in interoception and alexithymia in schizophrenia.

Childhood trauma (CT) is a notable risk factor for schizophrenia. Separately, CT has been associated with alexithymia, referring to difficulties in identifying and describing one's own feelings, as well as disturbed interoception, referring to difficulties sensing and responding to signals that originate from within the body. Both self-perception impairments have been observed in schizophrenia; however, the role of CT in these observations in schizophrenia is unclear. To address this gap, interoception was assessed using the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA), alexit

Neural correlates of interoception and mindful attention on stressful events.

Many studies have explored the neural correlates and benefits of mindfulness, but have rarely focused on its components. This neuroimaging study investigates two components of a short mindfulness training, namely interoception and mindful attention, compared to immersion as an active control condition. Healthy participants were trained in three conditions: (1) interoception, (2) mindful attention of bodily sensations, and (3) immersion. In the scanner, participants read and imagined stressful self-relevant events while adopting one of these three strategies and rated subjective arousal. Partic

Vagal interoception of microbial metabolites from the small intestinal lumen.

UNLABELLED: The vagus nerve is proposed to enable communication between the gut microbiome and brain, but activity-based evidence is lacking. Herein, we assess the extent of gut microbial influences on afferent vagal activity and metabolite signaling mechanisms involved. We find that mice reared without microbiota (germ-free, GF) exhibit decreased vagal afferent tone relative to conventionally colonized mice (specific pathogen-free, SPF), which is reversed by colonization with SPF microbiota. Perfusing non-absorbable antibiotics (ABX) into the small intestine of SPF mice, but not GF mice, acut

Pain and emotion as predictive factors of interoception in fibromyalgia.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated interoception in fibromyalgia (FM), a disorder characterized by chronic pain accompanied by mood deregulation. Based on observations on the relationship between somatosensory processing and pain in FM and considering the affective symptoms of this disorder, we tested in FM three dimensions of interoception: interoceptive accuracy (IA), interoceptive awareness (IAW) and interoceptive sensibility (IS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one female FM patients (Mage = 50.3) and 21 female matched controls (Mage = 46.3) completed a heartbeat tracking task as an ass

Gender differences in reports of interoceptive hunger.

Gender differences in interoception, manifesting as attention to bodily events (typically greater in women) and accuracy at detecting bodily events (typically greater in men) are broadly established and suggest the likely existence of similar gender differences for interoceptive hunger. Here, we report a two-stage cross-sectional study to test for gender differences in self-report interoceptive hunger. In stage one we examined extant data (96 men vs. 355 women) and in stage 2 we collected data to test the findings from stage one (122 men vs. 315 women). Overall, compared to men, women consiste

Interoceptive sensitivity in patients with cervical dystonia.

INTRODUCTION: Interoceptive sensitivity (IS) is the ability to perceive sensations arising from the inner body. One method used to measure IS is the heartbeat detection task. The aim of this study was to investigate IS in patients with cervical dystonia (CD) and compare the results with those obtained in healthy controls (HC). We also sought possible correlations between IS and demographic, clinical and emotional features in CD. To evaluate the reliability of IS in a subgroup of CD patients and HC, we retested IS 4-6 months after the first evaluation. We also investigated whether dystonic post

Diminished Interoceptive Awareness in Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

Sensitivity to signals arising within the body (interoceptive awareness) has been implicated in emotion processing; interindividual differences in interoceptive awareness modulate both subjective and physiological indicators of emotional experience and the regulation of emotion-related behaviors. This study investigated interoceptive awareness in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), a chronic pain condition accompanied by various affective symptoms. Interoceptive awareness was assessed in 45 FMS patients and 31 healthy individuals using a heartbeat perception task. Cognitive performance,
