Interpersonal Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Depression in Parkinson's Disease: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common nonmotor complication in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, few studies have evaluated the efficacy of first-line psychological therapies for depression in this patient population. OBJECTIVES: This randomized controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), an empirically validated intervention for depression that focuses on the bidirectional relationship between mood disturbance and interpersonal and social stressors. A secondary aim was to assess maintenance of treatment gains at 6-month follow-up. METHODS: Participants with P

Effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy for community living depressed women involved with the justice system.

BACKGROUND: Despite the prevalence of depression among women in the justice system, and its potentially significant consequences, there is a dearth of studies investigating psychological treatments for depression in this context, especially outside prison. AIMS: Our aim was to gather preliminary data on whether individual interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is an acceptable and effective treatment for depression in women at an early stage in the justice system. METHOD: In this pilot study, IPT was offered to 24 depressed women following their first or second contact with the justice system. Th

How Interpersonal Psychotherapy Changes the Brain: A Study of fMRI in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Background: Recent guidelines and systematic reviews suggest that disorder-specific psychotherapeutic interventions are the first choice in the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD). The aim of this study is to examine brain activity changes in BPD patients (DSM-5) who received a revised BPD-adapted interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-BPD-R) compared with patients on the waiting list. Methods: Forty-three patients with a BPD diagnosis (DSM-5) were randomly assigned to IPT-BPD-R (n = 22 patients) or the waiting list with clinical management (n = 21 patients) for 10 months. Both groups

Patient baseline interpersonal problems as moderators of outcome in two psychotherapies for bulimia nervosa.

Objective: We tested an aptitude by treatment interaction; namely, whether patients' baseline interpersonal problems moderated the comparative efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) vs. interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for bulimia nervosa (BN). Method: Data derived from a randomized-controlled trial. Patients reported on their interpersonal problems at baseline; purge frequency at baseline, midtreatment, and posttreatment; and global eating disorder severity at baseline and posttreatment. We estimated the rate of change in purge frequency across therapy, and the likelihood of attainin

Interpersonal microprocesses predict cognitive-emotional processing and the therapeutic alliance in psychotherapy for depression.

Interpersonal theories of psychotherapy hypothesize that the success of therapy depends on the therapist's and patient's dominant and affiliative behaviors as well as their interplay (complementarity). This study sought to investigate (a) how in-session interpersonal microprocesses predict postsession evaluations of the therapeutic alliance as well as cognitive-emotional processing and (b) how complementarity develops over the course of a therapy session. Twenty depressed patients were treated at a university-based outpatient clinic with a variant of cognitive therapy. One session was analyzed

Predictors and moderators of time to remission of major depression with interpersonal psychotherapy and SSRI pharmacotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Although many studies suggest that, on average, depression-specific psychotherapy and antidepressant pharmacotherapy are efficacious, we know relatively little about which patients are more likely to respond to one versus the other. We sought to determine whether measures of spectrum psychopathology are useful in deciding which patients with unipolar depression should receive pharmacotherapy versus depression-specific psychotherapy. METHOD: A total of 318 adult out-patients with major depression were randomly assigned to escitalopram pharmacotherapy or interpersonal psychotherapy

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for major depression following perinatal loss: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

This randomized controlled pilot trial examined the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of an adapted interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for major depressive disorder (MDD) following perinatal loss (miscarriage, stillbirth, or early neonatal death). Fifty women who experienced a perinatal loss within the past 18 months, whose current depressive episode onset occurred during or after the loss, were randomized to the group IPT adapted for perinatal loss (the Group IPT for Major Depression Following Perinatal Loss manual developed for this study is available at no cost by contacti

Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents With Non-suicidal Self-injury: A Randomized Controlled Study.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant clinical concern in adolescents. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of group interpersonal psychotherapy (G-IPT) combined with treatment as usual (TAU) compared with TAU alone in treating adolescents with NSSI. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in a psychiatric outpatient clinic in Hubei Province, China, involving 52 adolescents 12 to 17 years of age diagnosed with NSSI. Participants were randomly assigned to either the G-IPT combined with TAU group (n=26), who received 12 additional G-IPT sessions, or the TAU-alone gr

Does interpersonal loss preceding panic disorder onset moderate response to psychotherapy? An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Little research has addressed moderators of treatment outcome for anxiety disorders, and none has considered interpersonal loss as a predictor of outcome. PURPOSE: To examine the effect of interpersonal loss events within the 6 weeks preceding panic disorder onset as a moderator of outcome in a randomized controlled trial of Panic-Focused Psychodynamic Therapy (PFPP) and Applied Relaxation Therapy (ART). Researchers hypothesized that such loss events would predict better outcome in PFPP but would not affect ART outcome. METHOD: Forty-nine subjects with panic disorder were randoml

Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depression in Perinatal Adolescents in Kenya: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-G) is effective across diverse populations and adaptable to low-resource settings. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether shortened 4-session mini IPT-G vs full IPT-G delivered by lay health care workers reduces depression and improves family functioning among perinatal adolescents. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This pilot randomized clinical trial of group IPT for depression used a 3-arm longitudinal type 1 implementation-effectiveness design between May 13, 2022, and April 1, 2024, at 2 primary care maternal and child health clinics in Nairobi,

Effects of Therapeutic Alliance in Interpersonal Psychotherapy Among Adolescent Girls With Loss-of-Control Eating.

OBJECTIVE: Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) has been proposed for prevention of excess weight gain among adolescents with loss-of-control (LOC) eating. Mixed findings from a trial testing this conjecture warrant elucidation of potential outcome predictors. The therapeutic alliance (adolescent-facilitator emotional bond and task collaboration) may be important for IPT but has received little attention in weight-related interventions. This study evaluated associations of adolescent-reported therapeutic alliance during IPT with weight- and eating-related outcomes. METHODS: Secondary analyses of

The influence of comorbid anxiety on the effectiveness of Cognitive Therapy and Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Anxious depression is an important subtype of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) defined by both syndromal (anxiety disorders) and dimensional (anxiety symptoms) criteria. A debated question is how anxiety affects MDD treatment. This study examined the impact of comorbid anxiety disorders and symptoms on the effectiveness of and dropout during Cognitive Therapy (CT) and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) for MDD. METHODS: Depressed individuals were randomized to CT (n = 76) or IPT (n = 75). Outcome was depression severity measured with the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) at the

Therapeutic alliance, subsequent change, and moderators of the alliance-outcome association in interpersonal psychotherapy for depression.

The therapeutic alliance has historically emerged as a pantheoretical correlate of favorable psychotherapy outcomes. However, uncertainty remains about the direction of the alliance-outcome link, and whether it is affected by other contextual variables. The present study explored (a) if early alliance quality predicted subsequent symptom change while controlling for the effect of prior symptom change in interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for depression, and (b) whether baseline patient characteristics moderated the alliance-outcome relation (to help specify conditions under which alliance predi

Interpersonal psychotherapy for the prevention of excess weight gain and eating disorders: A brief case study.

This article presents a brief case study of "Jane Doe," a 13-year-old, non-Hispanic White girl 2 participating in a clinical research trial of interpersonal psychotherapy-weight gain (IPT-WG). Girls at-risk for adult obesity and binge eating disorder (BED) were randomly assigned to take part in 12 weeks of preventative group treatment. Jane's IPT-WG group included five other early adolescent girls (mostly aged 12-13) at risk for adult obesity and BED. The case of Jane illustrates a successful example of IPT-WG for the prevention of excessive weight gain and for the prevention of BED. (PsycINFO

Group psychotherapy for female adult survivors of interpersonal psychological trauma: a preliminary study in Scotland.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence on manualised group interventions that facilitate the development of trauma recovery skills, affect regulation and meaning making for survivors of interpersonal trauma. AIM: The study aimed to provide preliminary evidence on the effectiveness of group psychotherapy (based on Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model, TREM) for psychological distress in adult survivors of interpersonal trauma. METHOD: Participants were a consecutive series of female patients (n = 71) from the waiting lists of five National Health Service (NHS) Boards in Scotland. Participants

Change processes in residential cognitive and interpersonal psychotherapy for social phobia: a process-outcome study.

The purpose of this study was to test cognitive and interpersonal models for improving social phobia. Eighty patients with social phobia were randomized to 10-week residential cognitive (RCT) or residential interpersonal psychotherapy (RIPT). They completed process measures every Thursday and a sub-outcome measure every Monday. The ratings were analyzed with mixed models. Weekly changes in the process variables derived from the cognitive model (self-focus, estimated probability and estimated cost of negative social events, safety behaviors) predicted subsequent weekly changes in social anxiety

Pretreatment and process predictors of outcome in interpersonal and cognitive behavioral psychotherapy for binge eating disorder.

The present study examined pretreatment and process predictors of individual nonresponse to psychological group treatment of binge eating disorder (BED). In a randomized trial, 162 overweight patients with BED were treated with either group cognitive-behavioral therapy or group interpersonal psychotherapy. Treatment nonresponse, which was defined as nonabstinence from binge eating, was assessed at posttreatment and at 1 year following treatment completion. Using 4 signal detection analyses, greater extent of interpersonal problems prior to treatment or at midtreatment were identified as predic

Interpersonal psychotherapy for adolescent gestational weight gain and wellbeing: pilot and feasibility randomised controlled trial.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Pregnant adolescents face adversities that heighten perinatal complications in mental (e.g. depression) and physical (e.g. excess gestational weight gain [GWG]) health. Depression may affect excess GWG through stress-related behaviours. We sought to pilot feasibility/acceptability of integrating a brief mental health intervention within prenatal care to address depression and stress-related behaviours contributing to excess GWG. DESIGN/METHODS: The current study reports recruitment/retention, feasibility, and intervention/protocol acceptability of a pilot randomised controlle
