Journal of acquired immune deficiency syndromes (1999)2025eng
BACKGROUND: Interpersonal violence (IPV) affects half of women living with HIV (WLHIV) in the United States and has important consequences for mental health and HIV outcomes. Although different types of stigmas (eg, HIV- or sexual identity-related) are associated with increased risk of IPV, the relationship between poverty-related stigma and IPV is unclear, even though poverty frequently co-occurs with IPV.
METHODS: Data from up to 4 annual visits (2016-2020) were collected from 374 WLHIV enrolled in a substudy of the Women's Interagency HIV Study (now known as Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study/W

One victimization experience can increase the risk for subsequent victimization, which is known as revictimization. The aims of this study were to build on sexual revictimization research by (a) broadening the understanding of revictimization to interpersonal (and potentially noninterpersonal) trauma generally and (b) gaining specificity in the mechanisms that underlie revictimization. Using a prospective multisite design, an ethnically and racially diverse sample of 453 young women from the community (age range: 18-25 years, 60.7% European American) completed an initial survey and at least on

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to assess the potential unique and relative mediating effects of three interpersonal risk factors (i.e., excessive reassurance-seeking [ERS], negative feedback seeking [NFS], and rejection sensitivity [RS]) in the relationship between childhood emotional abuse (CEA) and depressive symptoms.
METHOD: One hundred eighty-five undergraduates were followed over a four-month interval. Participants completed assessments of childhood abuse history, ERS, NFS, and RS, and depressive symptoms at baseline, as well as depressive symptoms at four-month followup.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders tend to precede onset of comorbid depression. Several researchers have suggested a causal role for anxiety in promoting depressive episodes, but few studies have identified specific mechanisms. The current study proposes an interpersonal model of comorbidity, where anxiety disorders disrupt interpersonal functioning, which in turn elevates risk for depression.
METHODS: At age 15 (T1), 815 adolescents oversampled for maternal depression completed diagnostic interviews, social chronic stress interviews, and self-report measures. At age 20 (T2), participants repeate

OBJECTIVE: We examined mental health pathways between interpersonal violence (IPV) and health-related outcomes in HIV-positive sexual minority men engaged with medical care.
METHOD: HIV-positive gay and bisexual men (N = 178) were recruited for this cross-sectional study from 2 public HIV primary care clinics that treated outpatients in an urban setting. Participants (M age = 44.1 years, 36% non-White) filled out a computer-assisted survey and had health-related data extracted from their electronic medical records. We used structural equation modeling to test associations among the latent fac

BACKGROUND: Voice-related distress has traditionally been explained by voice content and severity; however, emerging research highlights the importance of relational, social rank and gendered dynamics. This study examined whether the gender of the hearer and perceived voice gender interacted to influence distress and whether specific hearer gender-voice gender configurations were associated with heightened distress.
METHOD: Assessments within routine clinical practice were completed by 347 adults referred to a UK specialist clinic for distressing voices between 2016 and 2024. Participants pro

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender expansive (TGE) individuals report elevated rates of eating disorder (ED) symptoms and suicidal ideation (SI). ED symptoms may contribute to SI via impairments in interpersonal functioning, particularly thwarted belongingness (TB) and perceived burdensomeness (PB). Social exclusion (SE) may also account for this relation, though no U.S. studies have tested this. This study explored relations between ED symptoms and SI through TB, PB, and SE in a U.S. TGE sample.
METHOD: Participants (n = 301, 43% gender expansive, Mage = 29 years) recruited nationally throug

Persons with dependent personality disorder (DPD) have difficulties describing their inner world, and in realizing their negative ideas about the self, such as being weak, unworthy or powerless are just ideas. As a consequence, they tend to over-rely on others and may lose control over their emotions. Treating these persons can gain benefits from including body-focused techniques as they can promote a) awareness of internal states, b) better emotion regulation, c) the capacity to consider their negative ideas about themselves as not necessarily true, and d) gain power of and agency. OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the factors that can maintain the distress related to voice-hearing experiences in youth. Building upon understandings developed with adults, this study aimed to explore the associations between negative relating between hearer and voices, persecutory beliefs about voices and voice-related distress in a clinical sample of adolescents. The study also aimed to investigate associations between relating to voices and wider patterns of social relating.
DESIGN: This was an observational, cross-sectional, survey study.
METHODS: Thirty-four young people (age 14-18 y

BACKGROUND: There is little argument that COVID-19 is potentially highly stressful for many people, however, little research has broken down COVID-19-related distress into different aspects clustering together, and how these clusters differ in terms of the vulnerability of the individuals.
OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of the present study was to identify distinct profiles of individuals' reactions to COVID-19-related stress, and analyze potential differences and risk and protective factors associated with these profiles in relation to childhood abuse, psychopathology, and interpersonal relation

PURPOSE: Quality of life is a fundamental aspect of both clinical practice and research on eating disorders (ED) due to the significant impacts these disorders have on everyday life. Disorder-specific scales can improve the quality of research and findings and offer greater sensitivity and responsiveness. However, no specific instrument is available in Italian for ED. The aim of this paper is to adjust and to validate a reliable scale with specific items regarding physical and interpersonal well-being.
METHODS: The Italian version of the Eating Disorder Quality of Life (IEDQOL) scale was deve

OBJECTIVE: Large numbers of United States service members and veterans are enrolling in colleges and universities. Many are experiencing posttraumatic stress symptoms secondary to their military service, and these symptoms are associated with academic dysfunction. However, little is known about the mechanism(s) through which posttraumatic stress increases risk for academic difficulties. The goal of the current study was to evaluate perceived interpersonal relationship quality as a mediator of this association.
METHOD: The current study investigated the indirect effect of posttraumatic stress

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain can lead to challenges in social functioning that extend into healthcare. The Mentalizing & InteRpersonal Recognition of Others' Relational States (MIRROR) intervention was developed to support patients' relational and communication skills in healthcare by targeting mentalizing (the ability to understand mental states of oneself and others). This paper describes MIRROR and reports preliminary findings regarding feasibility and acceptability across two pain samples.
METHODS: Eleven patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP, mean age 39.64 ± 16.37) and 12 patients wit

Women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often report problems with sexuality. Relationship dimensions and psychological dimensions of sexuality seem to be impaired. We examined whether trauma focused therapies improve relationship and psychological dimensions of sexuality. In a randomized controlled trial that took part between 2014 and 2016 in Germany, N = 193 cisgender women with PTSD after child abuse (mean age = 36.3 years) completed the Multidimensional Sexuality Questionnaire, assessing psychological dimensions of sexuality and the Resources in Sexuality and Partnership, assessin

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a 36-amino acid peptide that is widely expressed throughout the limbic system. Recent evidence has highlighted NPY as a marker of resilience to posttraumatic psychopathology, which may be due to its association with neural regions involved with emotion regulation. This study examined whether plasma NPY levels moderated the relationship between emotion regulation and psychopathology in a sample of adult survivors of childhood interpersonal trauma, a population known to be at high risk for psychopathology. Adults exposed to an interpersonal criterion A trauma during child

BACKGROUND: Research on autobiographical memory (AM) in anorexia nervosa (AN) has largely focused on quantitative aspects such as specificity, while qualitative investigations of thematic patterns remain limited. This study aimed to compare the content of cued AMs between individuals with AN and healthy controls (HCs) using a qualitative approach.
METHODS: Sixty-three adults (AN = 43; HC = 20) completed a computerised written version of the Autobiographical Memory Test, generating memories in response to six-self- or moral-disgust-related cue-words. A total of 189 AMs (AN = 129; HC = 60) were

BACKGROUND: Autistic masking refers to some autistic individuals' tendency to hide, suppress, or camouflage their autistic traits, autistic identity, or autism diagnosis. Autistic masking also may include unconscious or conscious attempts to mimic the behavioral, cognitive, or sensory styles of nonautistic neurotypical people and to suppress natural forms of autistic behavior, cognition, and reactions to sensory experiences. Since autistic people are a stigmatized minority in many neurotypical dominated societies, passing as nonautistic through autistic masking may be an attempt to avoid autis

Uncontrolled anger may lead to aggression and is common in various clinical conditions, including post traumatic stress disorder. Emotion regulation strategies may vary with some more adaptive and efficient than others in reducing angry feelings. However, such feelings tend to linger after anger provocation, extending the challenge of coping with anger beyond provocation. Task-independent resting-state (rs) fMRI may be a particularly useful paradigm to reveal neural processes of spontaneous recovery from a preceding negative emotional experience. We aimed to trace the carryover effects of ange

In healthy individuals, direct eye contact is thought to modulate a cortical route eliciting social cognitive processes via activation of a fast subcortical pathway. This study aimed to examine functional brain connectivity during direct eye contact in women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to childhood abuse as compared with healthy controls. We conducted psychophysiological interaction (PPI) analyses in Statistical Parametric Mapping-8 (SPM8) using the superior colliculus (SC) and locus coeruleus (LC) as seed regions while 16 healthy subjects and 16 patients with a primary d

Background and Objectives: Interpersonal violence (IPV) has overtaken road traffic collisions as a leading cause of facial fractures, yet regional data from Southern Europe are limited. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all adults (≥18 y) treated between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2022 for radiologically confirmed IPV-related facial fractures. Recorded variables were demographics, AO-CMF (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen-Craniomaxillofacial) fracture site, Facial Injury Severity Score (FISS), presence of facial soft-tissue wounds, treatment modality, and length
