Diagnostic accuracy of ultraviolet-induced fluorescence dermoscopy in non-neoplastic dermatoses (general dermatology): A multicentric retrospective comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Preliminary data support the possible use of ultraviolet-induced fluorescence (UVF) dermoscopy in general dermatology, yet no accuracy analysis has been performed so far. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate diagnostic accuracy of UVF dermoscopy in clinically similar non-neoplastic conditions as compared to polarized light-based dermoscopy. METHODS: Patients with dermatoses potentially showing UV-induced findings were considered; cases were grouped according to clinical patterns and controls were also included. Standardized evaluation of dermoscopic pictures of the target lesion along with com

White piedra and Trichosporon species in equatorial Africa. II. Clinical and mycological associations: an analysis of 449 superficial inguinal specimens.

Eighty-one of 449 Gabonese female patients examined were found to be positive for genitopubic white piedra. The association with trichobacteriosis is frequent (53 cases), and mostly seen with inguinal intertrigo. Fifty-two strains belonging to the genus Trichosporon were isolated from genital hairs as well as from inguinal intertrigo lesions. These strains were identified in accordance with previously defined morphological and biochemical criteria. Three species were recognized: T. mucoides (25 strains), T. inkin (20 strains) and T. asahii (seven strains). Their macroscopic and microscopic mor

Etiology of toe-web disease in Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates: bacteriological and mycological studies.

We examined and sampled 45 patients with toe-web intertrigo for bacteriological and mycological studies. Prominent isolated pathogens were the genus Candida (57.7%), genus Aspergillus (28.8%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (26.7%) and coliforms (24.4%). Dermatophytes scored 4.4% (Trichophyton rubrum). There were 43 patents (95.5%) who presented with marked hyperkeratosis and maceration of the toe-webs involved. The tradition of the Emirati population of sitting cross-legged may, over time, induce in the toe-webs of overweight individuals a macerated pressure-reaction hyperkeratosis that is colonized

Gram-negative bacterial toe web infection: a survey of 123 cases from the district of Cagliari, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Foot intertrigo is mostly caused by dermatophytes and yeasts, less frequently by gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Nevertheless, the importance of polymicrobial infections and especially colonizations of Pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause therapy problems in relation to antibiotic resistance and the risk of potentially lethal complications. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the main epidemiologic and clinical features of intertrigo from gram-negative bacteria, the function of promoting factors, and the measures taken to treat and prevent this disorder. [Risk factors associated with leg erysipelas (cellulitis) in sub-Saharan Africa: A multicentre case-control study].

BACKGROUND: Acute bacterial cellulitis of the leg (erysipelas) is a common problem involving considerable morbidity in dermatology practice in Africa. Previous studies conducted in Europe and North Africa have highlighted lymphoedema and toe-web intertrigo as independent factors associated with leg erysipelas. The aim of this case-control study was to identify risk factors associated with leg erysipelas in sub-Saharan Africa, within a different socio-economic and culture context. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective case-control study in hospital dermatology departments in 8 sub-S

BACKGROUND: Localisation of epidermoid carcinoma in the intertoe space is very rare. We report a case occurring in a setting of chronic intertoe intertrigo. CASE: A 66 year-old woman presenting intertoe intertrigo for 30 years consulted for painful ulceration of the 3rd intertoe space of the left foot present for 4 years and refractory to antifungal treatment. The examination revealed ulceration with infiltrated edges occupying the entire 3rd intertoe space, with no satellite adenopathy. Histological examination of the skin biopsy sample revealed epidermoid carcinoma. Wide excision of the les

Enhancing skin health and safety in aged care (SKINCARE trial): A cluster-randomised pragmatic trial.

BACKGROUND: Older nursing home residents are prone to develop different skin conditions at the same time, including xerosis cutis, skin tears, pressure ulcers, incontinence-associated dermatitis or intertrigo. Guidelines and recommendations mainly address these skin conditions separately. The overall aim of this study was to measure the effects of the implementation of a skincare and prevention package. TRIAL DESIGN: A two-arm cluster-randomised controlled trial was conducted. METHODS: In nursing homes being assigned to the intervention group, an evidence-based and structured skincare and pr

[Chester-Erdheim's disease. A case].

We report the 32nd case of a multivisceral form of Erdheim-Chester disease. This exceptional pathology is a diffuse xanthogranulomatosis which comes within the scope of histiocytosis. The originality of this case is due to cerebral localizations and to the fact that some symptoms have been observed for a long time: diabetes insipidus, exophthalmos and stubborn intertrigo.

A trichromatic diagnostic pattern in inverse pityriasis versicolor: clinical, dermoscopic, and Wood's lamp correlation.

Dear Editor, Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a superficial mycosis caused by Malassezia species and most often affects the trunk and upper limbs. Flexural or inverse variants, however, may differ markedly from classical morphology due to the influence of moisture, temperature, and friction. These atypical presentations frequently mimic erythrasma, candidal intertrigo, tinea cruris, seborrheic dermatitis, and pigmentary disorders. [...].

[Use of topical antifungal agents].

Topical antifungal agents are not absorbed when given orally. They act by direct contact on the fungus, this type of action requires the simultaneous presence of antifungal and fungus for a minimum of time. There are a large number of compounds belonging to different families of antifungals: polyens, azoles, allylamine and morpholine and antiseptic substances. The treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis is based on topical antifungal agents: amphotericin B or nystatin, imidazoles such as clotrimazole or miconazole. Systemic antifungal agents are indicated in case or poor compliance to topical a

["Banal dermatomycoses" that cannot be overlooked].

Two young adults presented an interdigital intertrigo and a dyschromic nail alteration, respectively. They were adept of intense sport swimming in pools. Lesions had been misdiagnosed as athlete's foot and onychomycosis, respectively. Several antifungal treatments had been tried without success. After many months of inadequate management, the dermatological examination revealed the presence of two malignant melanomas corresponding to the eroded acrolentiginous and nodular subungueal types, respectively.

Psoriasis treatment in difficult locations: scalp, nails, and intertriginous areas.

Psoriasis comprises a broad spectrum of different clinical courses among which the chronic stable psoriasis by far occurs most frequently. The clinical presentation ranges from mild disease to more serious forms involving large areas of skin and/or joint disease. A number of modifying factors may impact on treatment choice in individual cases (eg, location of the lesions, disease phase, treatment history, response to previous treatments, comorbidity). Aside from this consideration, there are special localizations that remain some of the most difficult regions to control. Such entities are the
