Heterotopic gastric mucosa and intestinal atresia in a neonate.

Jejunal atresia is a well-known congenital malformation attributed to in utero ischemic events. Heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM), or gastric tissue present in a location other than the stomach, is a much rarer congenital anomaly and is generally found in the esophagus or within a Meckel's diverticulum. Identifying both within the same pathologic specimen is truly rare. This report outlines a case of jejunal atresia wherein HGM was identified within postoperative pathology evaluation of the specimen. An early episode of restenosis at the anastomosis prompted operative re-exploration, in which a

Intestinal atresia with gastroschisis: a selective approach to management.

BACKGROUND: The association of bowel atresia with gastroschisis is well recognized, but the ideal management is less certain. METHODS: The records of 10 infants with gastroschisis and intestinal atresia treated between 1991 and 1997 in a single neonatal surgical unit were reviewed. RESULTS: Ten infants had midgut atresias: 5 small intestine, 1 jejunum and colon, and 4 colonic. Of the 6 with small bowel atresias, 4 had primary abdominal wall repair with electively delayed primary anastomosis at 21 to 46 days, 1 had decompressing tube jejunostomy at 11 days at the time of secondary abdominal c

Meconium ileus and intestinal atresia in fetuses and neonates.

A collaborative study was performed to determine the different types and mechanisms of intestinal abnormalities during gestation. Cases had to fulfill one or more of the following three criteria: (1) meconium ileus, (2) intestinal stenosis or atresia, and (3) meconium peritonitis. Esophageal atresia, anorectal atresia, and abdominal wall defects were excluded. One hundred two cases were reviewed from the autopsies of 42 induced abortions, 22 stillborns, and the surgical findings in 38 neonates. Meconium ileus was detected mainly during the second trimester (28/38), and was associated with cyst

Intestinal Metaplasia of the Esophagus in Children With Esophageal Atresia.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF) can develop Barrett esophagus as a long-term consequence of their condition. Intestinal metaplasia (IM), a risk factor for developing adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, has not been well characterized in the pediatric population. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients with EA-TEF followed at 3 academic pediatric centers between the years 1997 and 2014. RESULTS: Among 542 children and adolescents, 1.3% (7 patients, 5 girls) were diagnosed with IM based on endoscopy and pathology. Six of the patients had EA-TEF ty

Histomorphological Features of Intestinal Atresia and its Clinical Correlation.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal atresia accounts for approximately one third of all cases of neonatal intestinal obstruction. There is controversy regarding pathogenesis of congenital atresia and stenosis of small bowel. Studies regarding clinical manifestations and specific histopathological features of neonatal intestinal atresia are scarce in Indian literature. AIM: To understand the histomorphological features and thus suggest pathophysiology of cases with Intestinal Atresia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Out of 147 cases, of intestinal obstruction in newborn studied over a period of 5 years, 39 cases

Histological study of intestinal atresia due to intrauterine intussusception.

Histological studies were conducted on 4 patients with intestinal atresia due to intrauterine intussusception. This atresia is characterized by a polypoid lesion as the remnant of the invaginated and necrotized intestine in the distal intestinal lumen. As the result of the histological survey in the affected intestine, we tentatively classified this atresia into two types, type A and B. In type A, the polypoid lesion is observed at the blind end, with relatively good preservation of the structure of the intestine. In type B, the polypoid lesion is located apart from the blind end, and the lesi

Fetal intestinal obstruction induces alteration of enteric nervous system development in human intestinal atresia.

Intestinal motility disorders are a major cause of morbidity after surgical repair of intestinal atresia of unknown mechanism. We hypothesized that interruption of antenatal peristalsis may disturb the normal development of the enteric nervous system. Using a series of neuronal (synaptophysin, neuronal nitric oxide synthase, neurofilaments) and nonneuronal markers (glial acidic fibrillary protein and c-Kit) and immunohistochemistry, we have defined developmental steps of the enteric nervous system in normal intestine (12 fetuses, 15 children, and 4 adults) and their alterations above and below

Abnormalities of enteric neurons, intestinal pacemaker cells, and smooth muscle in human intestinal atresia.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Intestinal dysmotility, which usually has been encountered in the severely dilated proximal segment, is an important problem in postoperative management of patients with intestinal atresia (IA). Changes of enteric nerves had been histochemically examined in both the proximal and distal segments of IA, but a systemic immunohistochemical analysis is still lacking. The aim of this study was to examine precisely alterations of neuronal and muscular elements and pacemaker cells in intestines from patients with IA. METHODS: Resected intestines were obtained from 5 patients with

Concurrent biliary atresia and intestinal atresia: a systematic review of clinical characteristics, pathogenesis, management, and outcomes.

PURPOSE: The coexistence of biliary atresia (BA) and intestinal atresia (IA) is exceptionally rare. Delayed recognition of BA in neonates undergoing surgery for IA may adversely affect outcomes. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the available evidence regarding the clinical presentation, pathogenesis, management strategies, and outcomes of patients with concurrent BA and IA. METHODS: A systematic literature search of PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar was conducted for studies published up to December 2025. A proposed classification system for familial intestinal atresia and its relevance to the understanding of the etiology of jejunoileal atresia.

Familial cases of the various types of intestinal atresia are well described, and we now report an additional family. Based on a review of the literature, a classification system for the different types of familial atresia is presented. Current teaching attributes most jejunoileal atresias to in utero vascular accidents occurring relatively late in gestation (after the 11th or 12th week). Although some cases clearly occur this way, as a result of processes such as volvulus and intussusception, knowledge of the familial form of the disease indicates that most cases of jejunoileal atresia actual
